Hey Home menders! Nothing worse than 1950's tile half way up the wall..Let's get real... the 50s are gone, no more separate hot and cold faucets. It's time to remove that wall tile and install wainscoting. Wainscoting panel with colonial base and chair rail to cap? Easy! Transform that bathroom with a quick and easy bath make over. You can do it!

A couple of questions if you don't mind? My bathroom is from 1926, will the tile adhesive be the same? It's not on drywall. Why didn't you use the multitool to remove the tile? Also, can you put drywall over tile and save the tile demo work?
@homemend

hey paul...you could go over tile but its not recommended. just as a class thing..people will know..lol i did classic hammer and scraper, prybar, chisel or whatever you have to remove it...the multi tool would dull very quickly....1926..it should be just as tough this one..you got this!

I tried to use different techniques to remove the adhesive from the wall, but am having little success with these methods. I probably only have 10% of the adhesive off and I have been working on it for hours. Can I just skim coat over the adhesive and let it dry before I put my wainscotting up?

The first way you cut 2 pieces of chair rail to join them at a corner, that seems odd (15:15 - 16:50). You cut the left piece straight, then you used a coping saw for the right piece. Then for the next corner, you just cut both of them at a 45 degree angle (16:45). You made it sound like coping would give a cleaner end result. Why would coping look better? Nice trick pre-filling it with caulk! Thanks for the video.
@homemend
@homemend 2 года назад
Hey Patrick yes sir thank you so much for sharing. I wanted to show the two different ways to create the corner. Coping it helps one piece layover the other and just provides a cleaner more professional look, plus it makes up some of the space in case you don’t have an exact 90 Degree corner. Thank you so much for commenting

Should you be concerned about asbestos when you do this? Is it in old tile glue, since it looks very similar to black mastic, which was the glue that was used on floor tiles up until the 70's, which had asbestos in it.
@homemend
@homemend Год назад
Hey Melissa we just kind of roll with it, if it’s dusty and hard to breathe throw on a mask, if it’s known to be made as asbestos such as the glue or the 8 x 8 old-school kitchen tile or the pipe wrap stay away from it otherwise we roll on. I hope this helps

Can getting rid of the wall tiles actually be a bad idea in bathrooms that don't have windows, because of the moisture buildup? Are there any special precautions or extra steps you would do when installing wainscotting in a windowless bathroom, vs. one with windows? (Yes, windowless bathrooms with showers do exist. They usually have an exhaust fan to pull out the moisture from showers, so you don't have a problem with mold.)
@homemend
@homemend Год назад
Hey Melissa typically every bathroom is required to have either a window or an exhaust vent to the outside, the fancier ones do a better job but no there should be no issues replacing the tile, as long as you have your fan and it’s doing the job you are good to go. Great question
@Melissa0774
@Melissa0774 Год назад
@@homemend Thanks. My house was built in 1964 and never been updated since. I have a weird bathroom right in the middle of the house that has no window. It does have an exhaust fan, which comes on automatically whenever the light is on, but I don't think it works very well. I heard that you can test if an exhaust fan is working by seeing if you can get a piece of toilet paper to stick to it. It doesn't stick. I want to do something about the wall tiles, but I have to be careful about moisture and potential mold buildup because it gets very steamy from the shower because of the ventilation situation. I'm wondering if there's some kind of wainscotting I can just put on top of the tiles, without having to remove them, but like I said, I have to be sure that mold can't grow behind it.
@homemend
@homemend Год назад
Hey Melissa definitely invest in a decent fan putting a good fan in there sounds like it will take care of any concerns you may have with moisture. Make sure your ductwork has been cleaned out in the last year or two and get air flowing through there. You got this
@Melissa0774
@Melissa0774 Год назад
@@homemend Have you heard of the toilet paper test for exhaust fans? Just because you can't get toilet paper to stick to it for more than a second or two, is that really a reliable enough sign that it's not working properly? Or does that not mean anything?
@robinchopra139
@robinchopra139 2 года назад
can you glue wainscoating directly to the tile instead of removing it?
@homemend
@homemend 2 года назад
Hey Robin. You probably can but I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m guessing moisture issues may be a problem but and a half bath we’re really just trying to make it look pretty. It seems something crazy enough that I would try LOL
@shaunbava1801
@shaunbava1801 2 года назад
If it's relatively flat you can go over, remove the first row of tiles put a thin piece of wood to shim, put a shim above the last row of tile, nail to the top and bottom shim into the studs, glue the middle of the board using a good adhesive, PL premium polyurethane adhesive should hold the panel really tight even against ceramic tile. Moisture won't be an issue, I bought my house and the previous owner had a contractor redo one of the baths and this is how it was done, it's been up for probably 7 or 8 years and there is no sign of any problem. If you want to rip the tile out use a pry bar and a big hammer to "pop" the tiles or even better a rotary hammer. If it's really old the wall behind the tile is concrete, ripping it down is not really a good option because you won't really be able to nail into it anyway.

Couldn't disagree more, I would love to have tile halfway up the wall! I foster animals and they are quite destructive. Tile would be so much easier to clean and a cat or dog would have a much more difficult time chewing through or tearing up tile. A modern tile would like much nicer and hold up better for our life style - maybe an old style from 50 years ago needs to be renovated but there are nicer options now.
