Remember my old Mum joining a Christmas Club in the 1970's , saving up for a Turkey , presents for my Sister and Me , going shopping and buying 3 days of food , sometimes 4 if Christmas was on a weekend . The milk man coming round at 1 on Christmas morning to deliver milk , AND it snowed , sometimes . Morcombe and Wise Christmas show , the Great Escape or the Italian job on tele in the afternoon , the smell of Dads cigars . Happy Days
Spot on comment. It really felt like Christmas back then. There was definitely a different feeling in the air. Simpler times, but hard times for our parents to make our Christmases great. Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄🎉🎈🎊✨
That's when Christmases were proper Christmases, I was only 13 then but remember my mam baking well in advance, there was never any shortage of food even when there was no supermarkets like there is now. And one of your bigest things was what was the Christmas number one. Such happy times, wish Christmases were like that now .
I remember Spike Milligan back in those days (1970s) complaining how awful Christmas were compared to back in the 50s. And back in the 50s people probably complained that Christmas was better in the 30s....and so on back into history. It was always better 30 years ago.
And a lot didnt have fridges or freezers back then either - i think it was the mid 70s when my mum first got a fridge and telephone about the same time i think
@@lynnedavies5884 they said the 1920s was the great depression,,but the 2020s is giving the 1920s a run for its money,,and we're only 2 years in 2020s.
Likewise. Christmas started when mum started mixing the Xmas cake. I'll never forget queuing at Marks and Sparks to get the chicken. Never turkey - too dry.
I didn't really like this prog , all he did was moan and say stupid stuff or so I thought at the time as I was young , it was ok at first but I tired of it and the house looked depressing , yes there were some good episodes but I mostly gave it a miss ,
Christmas was special then. Up early 3.00 am. Unwrap the presents then back to bed for a couple of hours. Beano annual and selection box. Tangerine in stocking, socks always. Big Christmas Dinner, Christmas pudding. Christmas tea with grandparents. Morecambe and Wise, Christmas night with the stars.
Yes, Perfect! And I loved lining all my presents up under the tree after I'd unwrapped them, and lying on my back staring up through the branches at the Christmas lights. What beautiful Christmases we had
"My uncle Wilf used to say it was the government giving us all these diseases". Little did we know how right uncle Wilf was. RIP to all those that appeared on this show.
Loved .loved this ….when I was a young child…how true was he about politics and what they’ve done to this country..and he spoke about this in the 60 s. He said it so right DINInt heeeeeeee
I was 12 in 1972, youth makes Christmas seem better. Her moaning reminds me of me 😂 I’ve got a 19 year old daughter, Amazon make it like Christmas every day for her. God I feel old 😂
One of the comedy greats. I was brought up in the east end of london in the 50s. I remember my dad and his brother dragging a turkey down our street pissed. The old man not the turkey. My mum had a go at them, so they went back down the pub. I miss the old man
Love this show. Got both the original and the follow up series, Till Death, and In Sickness and in Health. These are the days when comedy was brilliant. Freedom of speech at its best. Alf would have a pop at anyone and everyone. These days of political correctness are bloody boring. You can't say this, and you can't say that, because you are bound to upset someone. Unless of course, if you happen to be black, or any other colour of skin, or gay, or trans, religious, etc, . Freedom of speech is still there! But not if you are a straight white person. And that's a fact! ..... Unfortunately, people don't get that the joke was on him for being so ignorant about things.
@The Burbles Thank you. Nice to know that there are still people around that that think the same. It is true. Life has become a mixed up world of two faced, bullshitters. The amount of things you can see on TV or screen (in the eyes of the so called modern person), is fine. Nudity, gay sex, racist black people, trans genders, etc etc etc. But put some real comedy on from the past, and it is bleeped, or cut to pieces, as though it is so bad. What a hypocritical world it is we live in. Fake! A good example! A certain queue jumper who came out live on his morning show. He had been married to a woman for years and has two daughters. Every one on his show gave him a pat on the back and hugs, and saying how brave he was. Had he said, I've been married all this time and have two daughters, and fancy another woman. Everyone would have jumped on him and his name would be dirt. But because he fancies other men, he is a hero. What a load of bollocks. Bring back the old days, when freedom of speech was real, and people were honest about what they really thought.
Amazing that this was in 1972, telling us what they were doing and pre warning us too. In '52, sprayed food with DDT and got polio like results as they had a new vaccine for polio.
Yes, and I like how Alf gives a little nod before quickly realising the mistake; "You silly moo. How could it have been Christmas? He hadn't been bloody well born yet."
@@AlanJones-wz5ey The world was never like this, which is why Alf rightly stood out as the over-exaggerated cartoon National that the politically-driven nation-hating family unit destroying writers wrote him as, todays society is rife with those who grew up watching the tv thinking what they were seeing was how it was, completely blind to the agenda behind these 'programmes'
@@npc3po301 The agenda my friend was to take the piss out of people like this. Trouble with this world to many people can’t wait to jump on anything that is trending, I. e. White privileged etc😂😂😂
When life was life,. Wonderful series, well done to BBC for showing it all those years ago. If I could go back in time, I would jump at the chance , to live in those days. , and have drink with Alf and family , in his local.👍
I love how she's saying about how it wasn't as good as the old days. Every generation always says it was better back in the olden days. The truth is, if we were transported back there now, we couldn't cope. We'd be reaching for non existent phones, internet and other modern tech. Looking back to the 70's when I was a kid, no thank you, I prefer my current lifestyle.
I think it's more to do with the fact we inevitably grow older and it's our youth that we actually miss. You mention todays technology and it's thanks to the internet that we are able to take a trip back in time, something previous generations didn't have. I do also think age and experience makes a person more cynical, depending how their life has panned out down the years.
@@teeteringonthebrink.305 I preferred olden days as life seemed easier , plenty jobs and wages you could get by on , families went walks together and peace was revered , but I know it wasn't so good for everyone
@@smallfeet4581 I agree, life did seem easier and less complicated. There is a lot I miss about my youth especially some (but not all) of the people who are no longer in my life now, whether deceased or simply having lost contact with. We always say we'd like to back to the past, but then wouldn't we miss certain special people we have in our lives now, who were not around during our younger days because they had yet to come into this world? I know I would.
My dad used to say t trouble wi this country is t alcohol the footy chants would be rubbish without it. I can see the attraction they just go to chant offensive chants and have a laugh. I was wondering LEEDS - BROMPTON FC no longer exists it went in to receiveshihip not the premiership it was the village hobbyists anyway Dad had dozens of trophies I was satisfied with one I DON'T WANT A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE I DIDN'T INVENT DYNAMITE ANYWAY😂😂😂
