What RU-vid photography videos were like 11 years ago. I learned so much from Mark Wallace and other photographers like Mike Brown, who taught me how to use my camera to its maximum potential. Current photography influencer videos are either infomercials, silly prediction videos, or time-wasters obsessed with useless specs. There are still some good photo channels, but they have almost no subscribers. I just got a tilt-shift lens, and watching this video made everything crystal clear to me in under 20 minutes. Thank you!

Best description of a Tilt Shift Lens operation. What I would like to see is the difference between all five Canon Tilt Shift models, with an explanation if when and what subject you would use each particular lens to capture an image. Nice work on this video tutorial.

i don't understand why people put dislike on your videos, when I am (may be some others like me) using your videos to learn everything about photography and planning to make a playlist with only your videos.

Great video, very helpful with with my new Canon 17mm TS-E. If I recall my view-camera basics from long ago, some of the terminology may be off a bit. TILT is tilting the lens up or down vertically. SWING is swinging the lens left or right horizontally. Tilt and Swing are accomplished with the same knob on this lens, but to switch between TILT and SWING the lens must be rotated 90°. Marc used TILT to demonstrate selective focus and depth-of-field with the book and the miniature effect. SHIFT refers to left and right movement of the lens while keeping it parallel to the image plane (used in last segment of the video, Adorama sets). RISE AND FALL refers to up-and-down movement of the lens, still parallel to the image plane, as shown in the studio target with yellow lines and the historic house segments. The SHIFT and the RISE AND FALL movements are accomplished with the same knob on this lens, but to switch between the two the lens must be rotated 90°.

Without previous experience, I was still thinking "why would a swing be in the tilting direction and... " but I saw your comment and all was right in the world.

Good stuff Mark... (I use tilt/shift's all the time) Can I add something? - always use a spirit level, on the camera, or above the pivot point on your tripod head, when taking pictures of buildings... to make sure your camera is perfectly level.

Great Video and Explanation. I hope someone can answer my question. With the lens correction feature in Adobe Lighroom, does this tilt shift lens warrant the cost, or the hassle of setting it up? I suppose in some instances. but for buildings and architecture when I can straighten them easily post production?
@JohnMacLeanPhotography
@JohnMacLeanPhotography 10 лет назад
Bernie Hunt you can adjust vertical correction of buildings in LR, however you'll loose pixels in the process. And depending on how severe you're aiming up, or tilting down, the amount of cropping it needs could significantly reduce your overall file resolution.

Hmmm... The picture where the house tilts backwards... After being "fixed" looks like it about to break in the middle instead??? Is it because of the lens or is the house like that Mark?

Coming from my 4x5 days; the terminalogy should be: Tilt is up and down and Swing is from left to right (like you are swinging a bat)
@essellar
@essellar 12 лет назад
@LikeStig It's very visible for something as simple as shooting a flat subject (like a book or a building). You probably won't be shooting flat things, though, so you still need to worry about depth of field -- it's just going to be in front of and behind the new plane of focus. Search for "Focusing the View Camera" by Harold Merklinger; it's available as a free PDF download, and it explains the Hinge and Scheimpflug rules very clearly, and makes using tilt/swing in the field easy.

@ 13:01 - 13:07 the camera is actually aiming down. If it were parallel to the wall, there would be little to no visible keystoning as seen here. This is exactly why I prefer a geared head for architectural work. But I understand why you'd use a ball head for doing quick video demos.

Noob question, will this work and if so how much of a difference does it make if using a cropped body like the 70D?
@JohnMacLeanPhotography
@JohnMacLeanPhotography 10 лет назад
Jon Rubio It will work on your 70D, it's just that the angle of view is reduced. All that means is the lenses won't see as much in frame at a given distance compared to having a full frame body.

@nyatan

Doing so, you won't get the same angle to the object. Shift lens help you to maintain the same point of view while reducing distortion case by case.

@PhotographersOnUTube There is a huge difference between a real tilt shift lens and a lensbaby. If you just want the "miniature" look a lensbaby is OK but for architecture or studeo work you need the real thing

If you are shooting a tall building, maybe you can't get up high enough to center on the building, so you can make the building look more verticle in the photo from your vantage point (street view).

I think you're mostly talking about the gimmicky photoshop feature of selective focus? well that's just one aspect of the lens (plus the physical dimensions will actually make sense as opposed to a computer generated one on a 2D image), but it's a lot to do with studio work and architecture/buildings. if you realized that if you want to make a living (or at least save yourself a whole bunch of time), moving the camera so that the two planes are aligned so you get a flat image takes 2 minutes while trying to correct the distortion in photoshop will leave you with a cropped image that doesn't look quite right. please don't use the cliche "do it in photoshop" if you don't actually know the difficulty of using a bad source/raw image.
@Rebassed
@Rebassed 10 лет назад
That is your theory, i can get it took look like it was done with a tilt shift lens in photoshop so i am happy with it. i just rather spend my money on something else.
@proto35
@proto35 10 лет назад
Rebassed without getting into too much detail, time is money, and yes photoshop does it. We have all used it, but if you're in constant use of a TS lens, then owning one is key. the time saved by avoiding the extra post work can equate to those 2000 dollars. if youre very casual with the use of TS on daily work, then by all means rent, or yes go post. So it all depends on how often are you really in need of such a tool.
