best review of Tilta Nucleus Nano II on youtube :)

awesome tips, thank you. what a great time to be an independent film maker. i got the handle in my kit with the wheel and 2 motors, exactly what i was looking for. I plan to mount them separately on my tilta lightweight shoulder rig arms out front, it seems like that shouldnt be an issue with the parts you described. sweet!

I have the kit with 2 motors handwheel and the handle. Connected to a Hollyland and a feelword lut7 pro screen. Kind of heavy setup but with a support I will be ok for a long day. I can just agree with this clip. It’s a really good and reliable system.

Tilta has been very cunning about the handle. They have displayed it everywhere, but kept on omitting that it's not included in the kit. Not the best marketing practice. The unit is spectacular btw.

Nice review. Is it necessary to obtain the hand wheel or does the system run just with motor and side handle? Can they be paired without wheel. Or do I lack a whole bunch of setting when leaving out the side wheel? Thx.

Can you use this for the zoom rocker for an external extruding zoom, like remote zoom option.

I’ve been using the Nano II for a couple of months and find that it works well in most respects. Unfortunately there was a major Bluetooth incompatibility with the new full frame Blackmagic camera which made those features unusable because of weird lock ups. I’m not sure if they have issued an update since. It’s also been frustrating that the handle hasn’t been available to purchase. Hopefully that changes soon.
@grahamesheldon1487
@grahamesheldon1487 5 месяцев назад
That’s one thing I would have liked to have tested for this (camera control) - there are just so many cameras on the “compatible” list and unfortunately I had zero of them… ha. Thank you for the heads up about Blackmagic.
@waveland
@waveland 5 месяцев назад
@@grahamesheldon1487 I’m sure it’s fine with earlier models of Blackmagic, but with the full frame there’s open gate settings and the like which are very different than the S35 cameras. Instead I use a PortKeys monitor to do the remote camera control. Even that needs some updating relative to the CC 6K settings, but most of the adjustments remain accessible.

Does the lens screen work for you?! Have you managed to input your own lens? Or are you just using it to pull focus like the Nano 1? Personally I've found that no feature of this works 100% reliably and a vast majority were never implemented after release.

I have had pretty solid experiences with Tilta so far, spent thousands, and certainly have the full setup here. Everything appears to work solid now that the firmwares have been largely updated, before that a lot of functions would not work with the new BMD 6k FF. Tiltas, customer service is pretty solid, except for my experience with one guy, some Ricardo !@#$ from an expo who you would see photos of all over Tiltas website, even in this video (bearded guy with glasses) lol... Was pretty upset with that guy to say the very least. Got everything I would need now to make some pretty amazing stuff independent of the unions+! If all goes well I'll be using some of this for an EPK for a North ON feature+. Stay tuned!! :)

are you able to adjust the zoom speed on the fly while you are zooming? Hoping to use this system as a zoom servo for my parafocal lenses
@grahamesheldon1487
@grahamesheldon1487 5 месяцев назад
That’s exactly what I was using it for initially. The short answer is - no, not on the fly, but it takes 5 seconds in the menu between shots. Really easy to do that to get it exactly right to your taste
@Mekchanoid
@Mekchanoid 5 месяцев назад
I would say that this is a far more sophisticated feature than you should expect from this. It is just a basic AB focus wheel with some camera integration thrown in that still doesn't work six months after release. I've never before updated firmware to find that zero of my problems were fixed and there is no discernible difference in anything!
@thejoe4975
@thejoe4975 5 месяцев назад
@Mekchanoid I have the original nano and have a controller that someone 3d printed that plugs into it and allows me to zoom with variable speed. It's just a joystick, but surely Tilta should be able to add that functionality if someone else was able to do it with a basic Arduino. I think we should hold companies to a higher standard frankly. Heck at this point I'm probably going to build my own solution and release it open-source. I'm kind of astounded that no one else has done this. (I should probably mention that I intend to use this on parfocal lenses for live productions)
@Mekchanoid
@Mekchanoid 5 месяцев назад
@@thejoe4975 The Nano II system has all the hardware it needs to do this, and so much more. A motor with location feedback and a little programmable controller should be able to control zoom rates, and even recall entire focus pull sequences. It is pretty amazing that nobody is doing this afaik. Given all the software issues with the Nano II, especially the delays in key update delivery even six months after release and their struggle with the interface, I don't think that this is their strong point.

@grahamesheldon1487 5 месяцев назад
Isn’t that sort of an “auto focus” with Cine optics sort of solution? A bit apples and oranges I would say? The Nano II doesn’t have a “rangefinder” esque lidar component to the kit so I wouldn’t say that’s a fair comparison.
@dqstudios
@dqstudios 5 месяцев назад
@@grahamesheldon1487 While the 3 has lidar AF, the 2s is a simpler wireless FF. But I do appreciate it has a built-in battery in the motor, meaning you don't need to worry about any power cables at all. I loved and hated the original Tilta Nano and wonder how the PD stacks up to other pro units you've used. Thanks for responding and keep up the great reviews!

I think it is super weird that they placed the display at a position that is blocked by your hand when you use it. Other than that it seems to be an awesome product. the new powering options are a killer feature!

I have the unit and thought the same, but have to admit, it has not been an issue based on how you use the system for that particular shoot. And those shoots where you do mount it on the side of the camera, the screen is so bright as well as the haptic feedback system for the stops makes it surprisingly functional. And a slight tilt of the head helps for quick glance if necessary.

As an owner, a bigger issue is how buggy it is and how much of the advertised functionality is in beta. I would personally have liked even the most basic automation rather than the camera parameter display. If its meant for one-person crews, I can read the camera sittings off the camera perfectly fine. But if I need to pull zoom and focus I suddenly need two assistants 😂
@vishkumar

Does it come with a magnifying glass to read that tiniest screen on handle?🙄
@Mekchanoid
@Mekchanoid 5 месяцев назад
Man, it's not just the handle. The wheel makes poor use of its screen size so everything is small. The text input dialogue doesn't even use the screen shape so you lose even more size. Sadly you are forced to use this to input your lens distance date because there is no phone app or simple PC utility to add your own lenses.

I didn’t say it was perfect! I still use my Teradek RT kit for the superior range, but the bang for the buck here is pretty phenomenal. Different tools for different jobs. For what it’s worth - I’m never told what to say or not say from a particular brand and CineD as a whole has rules about this (you can read on the site). Also I used this on a specific streaming show - which makes it a field review in that sense :)
@Mekchanoid
@Mekchanoid 5 месяцев назад
Agreed. I have 20 days left to return mine and keep thinking that it doesnt do what it's supposed to do very well, there are a lot of basic glitches like not releasing the motor in manual calibration etc. The hardware has loads of potential, but it hasn't been exploited much by the coding. I'm recalibrating a lot, certain settings don't work until you do a power cycle, the manuals take a lot for granted and give no use instructions beyond core setup and leave much of the functionality unexplained.
@SoundOfYourDestiny
@SoundOfYourDestiny 5 месяцев назад
USB-C is a dumb power-delivery method, and it's disappointing to see it being adopted for that specific purpose. Locking coaxial DC power connectors are a well-established standard that's far more robust and REPAIRABLE. Good luck repairing a USB cable. Prospective customers need to push back on this asinine design.
@grahamesheldon1487
@grahamesheldon1487 5 месяцев назад
Could point on the repair front. At least there are plenty of replacements laying around if you needed one in a pinch.
@GarCorStudio
@GarCorStudio 5 месяцев назад
I do agree with you on the coaxial option, but I wouldn’t necessarily say dumb or expect customers to push back if this product is marketed as a budget friendly system and thus requiring them to keep the cost down. Like the nucleus nano 1 and nucleus m, both marketed accordingly, so don’t be surprised if Tilta comes with an advanced version of this new model eventually , but with more professional connections. And as an owner of the new nucleus nano 2, and the older version 1 as well as the PD movie remote live system, the latter two for long while now, they all work very well with no issues (knock on wood).
@SoundOfYourDestiny
@SoundOfYourDestiny 5 месяцев назад
@@GarCorStudio Fair opinion, but unless the USB cable is being used for something other than power, I'd argue that regular DC power jacks would be MORE budget-friendly.
