Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web 25 years ago. So it’s worth a listen when he warns us: There’s a battle ahead. Eroding net neutrality, filter bubbles and centralized corporate control all threaten the web’s wide-open spaces. It’s up to users to fight for the right to access and openness. The question is, What kind of Internet do we want?

He probably wouldn't have been. A lot of the progress that has been made was driven forward because the internet was open and not commercialized. Any case study on commercialized networks like PersonaLink will tell you that for a technology to reach a grand scale rapidly takes a free platform ripe for open innovation.

We must realize that we all have both left and right elements =Solidarity and Self reliance No one has only one element. so 'Sum' derived from 'two poles' , (thesis, antithesis, synthesis) To develop intellect and ethics by harmonizing the two, It is good to realize it and balance it properly But A few people polarized the crowd(political partisanship) without balancing themselves. I want automated distribution of power with Internet providers. The Internet was created as ARPANET to withstand neuclear disaster because it can route communications through alternate nodes if some node(s) have gone down (i.e. blown up). We need to employ this idea in the way that Internet access is given. Huge corporations like AT&T, Comcast, etc. should not have so much power over the function of the Internet. It should be more distributed. It should be mandatory.

I thought it was about a big map of the web… Which would have been way more interesting to me. I knew *magna* meant "great" but I thought *carta* meant "map" since in French *carte* means "map"…

I think he meant fight this fight "with me", because "for me" sounds like hes not willing to fight. If we go this route we will end up appointing heads of the internet and we will ruin it all over again. I say leave it. If you dont want anyone knowing your personal life then dont post private things about yourself online. Call your friends and send them photos of yourself through the mail or encrypted email. Oh wait we did used to do this and it was awesome.

He did a great job, for 2014 he's not saying anything special, though. He's saying the same that anyone who cares about the Internet and the last crumbs of freedom available to us says. Which is fine, maybe his name will make it carry weight with decision-makers.

Um, why can't we just continue freely using it organically? Perhaps the problem is the government...the elephant in the room which he never mentioned directly. If there was no big government, this talk would be baseless and everyone could just continue using the internet to enhance their lives without fear or need for 'laws' of the internet.

Because you need laws and rules in place to protect vulnerable people, defend free speech but dissuade defamation, bar against fraudulent activity and prevent wars erupting over differing views. Freedom is so much better within some well thought out and responsibly managed guidelines. Libertarians argue against this but have rarely seen the effects of true suffering.

Britain (Westminster) is in the process of junking Magna Carta for the same reasons that the US has already junked it by abrogating Habeas Corpus. Trusting the Brits to protect & sustain individual rights any longer is laughable considering both regimes consider individual rights as a relic of previous ages & thus, irrelevant in any Charters suitable for the Post Modern Age.

+Vincent Looi Well, technically, you and +Abdullah are correct. The internet was made in 1989, but wasn't fully conceptualized until Tim Berners-Lee made the World Wide Web. But that's what I think. It's most likely I could be wrong.

You are wrong, the Internet dates back to the 1960's when the US Department of Defence tinkered with computers and telephone lines in order to create a way to control things remotely (missiles and defence systems), as the technology spread and became civilian many US universities throughout the 70's and then hobbyists worldwide in the 80's used it more and more to chat or swap messages on bulletin boards. But you still had to dial from your own home directly to the recipient, like a phone call from one computer to another. In Europe the WWW was a node-based system being worked on at CERN in the 80's which would allow a user to dial in to one node (an ISP) and that node would have connections to every other node on the planet, allowing a single computer to theoretically connect to every other computer on the internet. Then CERN created a language called HTML that allowed a person to roam from page to page around the internet without having to hang up and redial each time as they had to before. The web as we know it was born when CERN put the first of these nodes online in 1989 and before long there were nodes everywhere, in January 1989 there were no webpages yet, by December 1989 there was already over 1 million webpages and thousands more popping up weekly as everyone became a net user.

So, in having to watch this for a class I must say that this guy seriously needs to lay off the caffeine. I mean he just rambles so fast that a lot good topics are missed as I am trying to understand what is it he is trying to say. He needs to BREATHE, slow down, and deliver his topics is a more understandable way. Although I love technology, this video was not enjoyable to watch. Sorry.

I can't take this guy. Something is going on with him his speech is cryptic and he moves like he has some kind of ticks going on. Possibly some kind of autism, I don't know that it is just a guess. In any event he is a terrible public speaker.
