how he can address serious subjects and matters and move you almost to tears in one breath, whilst have you streaming tears of laughter in the next, back and forth in one song..is just beyond genius.
The piano at 1:39 is simply fucking spectacular, I wish everyone had to have piano lessons for a while just to understand how stupendously difficult it is to write and play that. Long live the legacy of this man.
i came here to comment exactly that. thank u, for being a better wordsmith than I, sir... ;) this is pure technique. both as a composition and as a performance. 100% with you on this.
The first time I found this I sent it to my husband who was in the other room. I hear it start up and then I just hear him laughing so hard he couldn't breath!
I like how this song is almost describing the two parts of everyone's brains. One part concerned for the world and knowing there is something we all could/should better, and the other part that just can't focus for more then 2 seconds on what's important and just starts drunk talking about stuff no one else can be bothered to reflect upon.
I was showing this video to a friend and she was getting fairly into what he was saying, then 1:03 came along. I was waiting for it and it was brilliant. You have to love Minchin for the faces he makes people pull.
Heard of Tim Minchin about a year ago after watching a random RU-vidr..lee reacts...watch him just watched first season of upright last night ..great artist great musician pulls laughter and years out of ya
Love this song. Came here to watch it again 'cos the DVD version got edited by copyright - although Tim's overlaid rant on the same section is funny as well. :D
Being high as fuck with crippling anxiety of the world situations and so on cause we all die.. I have finally found enlightenment and can now move forward in having a happy and possibly long life of enjoying boobs, like this man.
+Kai Mango he's a master comedian. The first time the chorus is played, it's a surprise and a stark contrast. The second time, the topic being poverty, he makes the audience expect something that goes against not caring about the poor, but Boobs come up again. The third time, it's so expected, and he pauses for a long time, drawing out the anticipation. The satisfaction of hearing it when you expecting, like an itch being scratched is also another way laughter is induced. Humor can be induced by being unexpected, and also when expected. The latter evidenced in slapstick comedy, when you just know the guy is going to be physically hurt, and he does get hurt. (America's Funniest Home Videos).
I can't get by how incredibly good he is with the piano. It's funny how his madness is no hinder, how his joking and silliness - which is SILLY GOOD - goes so well with and yet frail compared to what musical genius he is.
The mark of a good joke is when you can see 2:40 coming from 1:32 or earlier, you spend the next minute waiting, but you still laugh out loud when it happens anyway.
Aside of Tim Minchin's (and every other male's) love for boobs, and his witiness and flow of words, rhythm and rhyme, I have just witnessed my very first discussion over the internet that does not involve insulting another, for expressing his/her opinion, but on the contrary, is civilized and meaningful. Which restored my faith in social networks to actually achieve their goals of uniting individuals rather than singling them out. So thank you TheQueenOfMediocity and Ryoushadow
