Tim Peake's dizziness experiment

ESA astronaut Tim Peake set out to discover if he could make himself dizzy on board the International Space Station. His NASA crewmate Tim Kopra lent a hand to put Tim in a spin.
When astronauts first arrive in space, they usually feel pretty rough for about the first 24 hours. They report feeling dizzy, disorientated and sometimes nauseous. This has to do with the vestibular system. In microgravity the fluid in the inner ear is floating and so the brain is getting mixed signals compared to what the eyes are seeing. After about 24 to 48 hours, the brain starts relying more on information that is coming from the eyes. Once this happens, in theory, their brain is better able to cope with all kinds of different orientations and of course spinning...

While getting used to microgravity, the brain also just accepts that it's perfectly normal to hang out in any orientation. Actually, it seems perfectly normal to me as well, but that may be because my autism spectrum brain doesn't really pay attention to faces in the first place, so an upside down face doesn't register as strange.

This is the best space video I've ever watched, bar none. It's so good to see the crew working together as there are many videos with just one astronaut; this gets across how well they work together and how good friends they are. Also, the experiment is very, very interesting and I'd never thought, one, that it's extremely difficult to get dizzy in space and, two, how fast someone can spin in space.

This was really cool for me to see, since I can't get dizzy either! My semi-circular canals are malformed (and my cochleas didn't develop fully, so I'm deaf), so I don't have a functioning vestibular system. I am perpetually unable to get dizzy. (I use my vision and proprioception to balance when walking, standing on one foot, etc.)
@MelindaGreen
@MelindaGreen 7 лет назад
That's really interesting to know! Deafness sounds like a bummer except for barking dogs and other annoyances, but motion sickness is one of the worst feelings I've ever had, so you're lucky in that way. Can you still experience extreme nausea from alcohol, food poisoning, etc.?
@elendiastarman
@elendiastarman 7 лет назад
Alcohol is extremely bitter to me, so I've never had more than a small sip of it. I've definitely had nausea and vomiting from from food poisoning and after my implant surgeries, due to fluid leaking out of my semi-circular canals.

My mom and I both can not get dizzy either. No amount of spinning can give me a feeling of dizziness. Dont know what specifically causes it for us though. Neither of us have the hearing issue you mention. But as you mentioned, my balance is sight specific. I have a hell of a time walking in the dark. I can stand on one foot just fine, but if I close my eyes I start to fall over immediately. Melinda's question, drinking too much lowers my coordination, but I have never experienced "the spins" that people talk about.

Almost all heard VR googles make discomfort - probably due wrong signals from eye/body sensors - similar like on this video. I suppose maybe longer session BEFORE flight can move adaptation process to the Earth? In case of for example planned emergency missions, where new arrivals should be in perfect condition just on arrival.
