Time Current Curve Basics: Determining Circuit Breaker Trip Times

Every circuit breaker has a characteristic curve that reports the manner in which it trips. As this curve is reporting the amount of current vs time, it is aptly called a Time Current Curve. Learning to read these curves allows you the ability to quickly understand the tripping characteristics of the circuit breaker being reported by the Time Current Curve.

The numbers shown at 7:42 represent the time dial of a given setting. By increasing the time dial, you are increasing the minimum response time (shifting the curve upward). The shaded region represents the minimum and maximum response time. (The breaker should trip within the time specified). You can coordinate multiple circuit breakers in series by ensuring the curves of different breakers do not overlap. If downstream breakers are in parallel, you may have to account for different levels of current seen at each point.

I have an outdoor circuit that breaks after less than a minute of delay. The circuit feeds 4 gate poles, I was able to isolate the short to one of the poles. Any suggestion why the breaker trips after several seconds and not instantly.
