January has always been a cleaning and organizing month in my shop. This year I wanted to tackle my tool wall that was looking a bit haphazard. There's loads of tips and tricks in this video and it's basically a bunch of mini builds. I use up a bunch of my scrap walnut and brass, and it turned out better than I could've imagined!

I've watched dozens of shop improvement and shop tour videos. Build Roubo benches, tool boxes, wall mounted plane, chisel, saw, hammer, screw driver, etc. rack and holder videos. Y'know what's a lot rarer? Videos where someone shows all the furniture they made.

Strangely satisfying seeing a fellow woodworker put more effort into making a beautiful place to store his sandpaper with such aesthetic beauty and quality that surpasses just about any furniture you could buy at any store. I think that is the epitome of conscientiousness

Aside from all the usual "that is amazing" aspects of the video, the biggest takeaway for me (I'm not a carpenter) is that "veneered plywood" exists. I've used leftover plywood scrap for so many things and it never even occurred to me that you could buy plywood that actually looks pretty, what a lovely concept
@MichaelAlm
@MichaelAlm 2 года назад
Totally! I love veneered plywood. It's stable and way quicker to make furniture with then solid wood. The only thing to be careful of is sanding through the veneer.

Once apon time a woodworkers tool chest was there cv to show how good they were. My dad had a over complicated saw horse he built on his apprenticeship but it was a excise to get him up to speed on a joint for where he was working. So building stuff like this give us time to polish our skill, in the video you used the ingraver which was cool. Also we spend a long time in our shops so let's make some where we want to spend time in. I really liked the sketching in space for the floating shelf at 18:08. Really look forward to seeing how you get on with the rest of the workshop.

Hahaha. That hole clamp bit on the drill press was hilarious. I’m a hobby woodworker so I know nothing but I tried the patterned plywood which got me super excited and do small projects. Honestly I love your vids just to watch so my brain registers things so I can apply them in the future. Wether it’s directly related to what you’re doing or not. Like…okay…jig so angled holes are possible. J know how to approach that now. Noted.

I would consider any of the things you built for your shop to be the woodworking achievement of my lifetime, since I've seldom built anything worth showing anyone. A really nice finishing touch you could do, to tie your brass pieces into the red coloring you have in other places, is to fill in the engravings with red paint. Fingernail paint works best, and it even has it's own little brush. Simply clean the area to be painted with an alcohol pad, sparingly brush some paint over the engravings and allow it to dry per the instructions. Next, gently sand away the excess paint surrounding the engravings to reveal your painted engravings. A lot of people do this to their firearms, as well as hand tools, such as wrenches and sockets. I really like the look you created for your shop. The black paint really makes everything else stand out. I can't wait to see what you do to the rest of your shop!!!

Wonderful job. The only time I winced was when I saw that you store your planes upright. My Grandfather was a cabinet maker and taught my Dad that planes should always be stored on their sides, and my Dad passed this on to me. I think that it is supposed to help protect the cutting edge of the plane from damage. So now my planes are always laid on their sides. I maybe the only person in the world that still does this, but it seems like the right thing to do.

It’s so inspiring to see beauty and function at work in equal measure in creative spaces. I love how you turned that part of your shop into a cabinet of curiosities, with each item becoming a focal point of beauty. Also, it really lights my heart up when creative people enjoy their own creative expression. I love that you came down to your shop several times just to look at what you had created. Sometimes when I’ve created something (portable) that I’m really excited about, I’ll place it near my bed so that I can see it the minute I open my eyes - and then, like a kid the night before Christmas, because I’m too excited about it to drop off immediately to sleep, I’ll reach out to turn the bedside light back on, just to double check whether it’s still there, looking the way I remember it (from the last time I looked, 5 minutes ago!) I wish you so much enjoyment and happy productivity in your new space!
