A difficult question, given the history and tradition of the tours, but with Australia where they are currently, should we re-think where and how the British & Irish Lions tour moving forward??

If British and Irish Lions dont tour in Australia then Rugby will truly die in Australia. The Lions tour and the next World Cup is Australia's lifeline.

@@nicolasmaligner8753 Growing the game of rugby isn't 'social work.' The B&IL tours have always been about celebrating rugby. Next year is just a rare opportunity for the tourists to enjoy some big wins ... maybe. Consider the post-WW2 tours of B&IL: 1950, 1959, 1966 WB's were smashed; 1989 WB's lost narrowly; 2001 WB's won narrowly; 2013 it a close one each way, then WB's got smashed in the decider. The history of Lion's teams getting beaten up by champion Southern Hemisphere teams is really more to do with the All Blacks and Boks. However the next tour turns out, I'm sure the crowds of fans will have a great time.

Slightly different though. The issue with sa was mismanagement of the pro game and senior side. The popularity of the game and the strength in playing numbers and at under age was still brilliant in SA. Aus has a problem with the pro game and an even bigger problem with the pathways to pro rugby.

For me the obvious long term solution has to be to make this Rugby’s Ryder Cup, and have the best of Europe (or the NH, depending on how you cut it), going up against a combined SH team (or SH + Pacific team) every four years. Preserve the Lions name and heritage, but make it the Northern Lions v the Southern Stars! Can you imagine how exciting it would be to see Antoine Dupont in a Lions team? Or the best of NZ and SA playing together. It would be absolute box office - everyone would want to watch. It would be a proper event again, and a more open and fair one at that, especially if you have a maximum limit on players from any one team. Traditional matters, but we need to evolve it to suit the modern world. This is the way to do it - make the Lions fit for a global sport.

Here in South Africa the B&I Lions tours used to be massive, arguably even bigger than the All Blacks visiting. It's such a tragedy that COVID ruined the last Lions tour here. I remember when they were here in 2009, that second test at Loftus one of the greatest games I ever saw. Many other iconic moments in 1974, 1980 and 1999. Would be sad to see the Lions lose their mythic status. Sadly it might be happening already and a whitewash in Aus would further damage the brand. Honestly don't know what the solution is. Well anticipated scenarios, Tim! I am a little ambiguos here. To begin with, cultural ties with Australia are deep, and it is tradition. The B&IL will not drop AU, this time. Imagine a tradition of 150 years, and one of the hosting countries is going through a rough patch? It is all about money, isn´t it? In these modern times it is quite inexpensive for some to join the Tour, but decades ago it was another story, and many travelled just the same.... Visiting Argentina would be lovely! I am an Argie, but there really isn´t much tradition and hardly any cultural ties any more. In the 1920s the British community was huge in Argentina: railways, banks, ports, infrastructure, industry, farming, cattle, etc. But then we got Peronism in the late 1940s, and it became less and less attractive to the British to live in Argentina. Most left. Still, the B&IL style of play is so exciting and entertaining, that financially it would be a success, as the local crowds alone would fill the stadiums! There would be a certain amount of British tourist coming down too, and I hope you, Tim, would be amongst them. Huge Congrats on you 100K Subscribers, and Congrats to us 100K subscribers for recognizing this channel as one of the TOP 2 in Rugby world wide! Congrats on the 100k Tim, very well deserved. 👍 I've no issue with adding Argentina to the Lions touring roster, but you certainly couldn't do it at this late stage, less than a year out from the Australian tour. No only have ppl been planning their trip to Oz and sorting out the logistics, but the Lions are playing Argentina in Dublin next summer as a warm up anyway. At any rate, the ARU need the cash injection and playing experience from this series going into their home RWC. I'd add Argentina to the mix for the next tour in 4 years time. I'd also argue for the Lions to play warm ups against Chile or Uruguay too. I'm not sure how many provincial clubs there are in Arg who could be competitive against the Lions so maybe adding Chile and Uruguay to that mix would be good. With that model in mind, I'd add the for their tour of SA the Lions should play Namibia as a warm up too. And when playing NZ, they should have to face Fiji beforehand They could play a combined Samoa/Tonga team (like how Moanan Pasifika is structured) team before hitting Australia on their next tour there.

A hearty congratulations on 100k followers. Well deserved! You're spot on about the type of followers you attract to your channel. I popped onto 'X' the other day (which I don't normally do) and I lasted about 2 minutes before I was over all the trash-talking and vitriol being spewed on other channels. In general, your followers are knowledgable, mature and have a passion for the game. Long may it last! Regarding the questions posed, as a Bok supporter I was (almost) bleak that the last game against Aus was so one-sided. I thought back to waking up early in the morning as a kid to watch Campo, Gregan, Larkham, Rocky Elsom, Eales, Giteau & Smith to name a few. I just don't see players like that in the Aus team nowadays and it's really sad. I think Australia and New Zealand have made a huge mistake in letting us (SA) leave Super Rugby. Although I'm enjoying the URC, it's not the same as Super Rugby... There were so many epic players and games in those days and I even had a Aussie and a Kiwi team that I supported. It's just not the same with the URC and I think the proof is in the pudding looking at the weekend's results. Finally, maybe the British & Irish Lions should play the top 3 sides in the Rugby Championship. Perhaps they could decide using the results of the comp 2 years out from the tour, or something. I'm personally not keen to see a Northern Hemisphere side with USA, Japan, etc. in the mix - may has well just watch the Ba Baas for that. I love the tradition of the B&I Lions. Maybe a combined SANZAR Lions team would be a vibe though. Anyway, congrats and thanks for the decent rugby content! Hope to bump into you in Cape Town!

Congratulations on 100k subs Tim, you thoroughly deserve it! I think a combo of both, tradition and innovation. I love the idea of a combined NH team against a combined SH team, perhaps every two years and then hopefully that will help teams like Australia and Argentina, so that we can keep the heritage and interest of the B&IL tours every 4 years to SA, NZ and Aus. Definitely think we need a change up and I’m sure every rugby fan would pay seriously good money to watch the combine North against the combined South. Hopefully world rugby are one of you 100k subscribers 😅

Glad to see you have got to 100k as you really deserve it - absolutely delighted to have found your channel this year. Speaking of change vs tradition, what are your thoughts on an expanded Six Nations? Would love to hear your thoughts on: - If it were to expand, which country/countries should join and why? - Alternatives to 7+ Nations like 6N remains unchanged but each team has an additional fixture against a European tier 2 e.g. every year Scotland plays Spain, England vs Georgia, Ireland vs Portugal etc. Or at club level with tier 2 Euro teams in URC/Top14/Champions&Challenge Cup etc like we saw with the Black Lions (Georgian team) in Challenge Cup
@EggchasersRugby
@EggchasersRugby Месяц назад
I would have a promotion/relegation match between bottom of 6N and top of Rugby Europe Championship (the 6 sides below). The playoff should be in the country of the league below.

North v South series every 2 years instead of this new nations championship thing. This way, it wouldn't diminish the RWC in any way. France (current financial & playing powerhouse) wld be involved. Each SQUAD must include at least one player from the top ranked 10 teams in each hemisphere (shows the true global nature of the game & an effort to increase the smaller nations participation), with each squad player having to get at least SOME game time during the 3 match series...possibly have Japan in the southern team, as thts their main area of competition, thus allowing a team like USA to have a spot in north team (capitalizing on recent explosion of interest from Olympics bronze). This would also add increased intrigue & focus on the world rankings for the teams on the fringes of the top 10 teams from each hemisphere. There's already enough friendly banter & faux animosity between nth & south fans to have a HUGE instant fan base for each team :) Truly, the best v the best!!🎉

Hi Tim congrats on 100k Regarding the Lions tour theres a reason we support Rugby its because ? Its a game for ALL and respect to all . Back to the Lions In 1996 before the tour I was lucky to sit in a bank boardroom with a few guys the hoast was Keith Wood the lions had no chance of winning the tour ! Keith said the oppisite!!! The players he introduced were Paul Wallace, Jeremy Davidson and Eric Miller.Wow what impact did they have! These guys with a lot of others proved whats all good about Rugby. Dont understamite the Wallabies!

Congrats Tim, on the milestone!! Well earned and deserved! I love the Lions ... yes, it may be a concept bourne out of the amateur era .... BUT ..... it still mainly works! 'Tours' are really a relic of a bygone era, where it took weeks to get there and back and maybe there lies the problem. Is it fit for purpose, in this modern age? Maybe a solution would be that every 2 years a Lions team is selected to play a combined selection from the Rugby Championship. They could travel to the NH and likewise we would travel down under, on an alternating 2 year cycle. The host country could be decided on a rotational basis. Cut out the mid week matches and just have 3 Tests. Make sure that the cycle does not occur/land in a RWC year. I don't think there should be a minimum requirement for representation from any single country (north or south) just the best 30 odd players on both sides. Opening it up to other countries to participate, only dilutes the concept and makes logistics harder. It really is a 'tough' one BUT the old format does need modernizing.
@WilliamFrance-v3r
@WilliamFrance-v3r 29 дней назад
I love the suggestions, one solution I would suggest to add onto that is that we do a tour every two years. Yes you'd lose the specialty and the hype possibly of being a "Lion", but thats only because more opportunities will be given. Once you get past that sea of disagreement the potential opens up massively. And thats not to say you couldnt still have a tour to the "Big three" every four years either. But that maybe in-between those gaps there's a pacific nations "Lions", a Euopean "Lions", a Rugby Championship "Lions", North American "Lions" You could make a whole round robin or King of the Hill tournament out of the idea. And those matches are played over the course of the calendar and then there's a final at the end of the season at Twickenham. AND THEY have to play the Barbarians for the Killik Cup. Lets get the invitational aspect of rugby alive and kicking again because that would be tantalising

There’s a fine balance between tradition being kept and keeping competition but I feel like some things are still traditions because they work so well. As a Bok fan I’m certainly never writing off Australia in any one-off test match against us, it’s a great conversation to have but the consequences for the 3 current tour destinations would require turkeys to vote for Christmas - and ultimately it likely wouldn’t happen✌🏼

Congratulaitons on 100k Tim -- fully deserved. If only we had a crystal ball. Rugby in parts are quite healthy, if you take some of the success stories in the last couple of years. The Rugby World Cup, Argentina playing in the Rugby Championship, URC with SA teams, Italy getting better in the Six Nations, The emergence and improvement of some Tier 2 nations like Portugal, Uruguay, Chile and hopefully some more in future. Look at the attendance of the Springboks v Ireland and the even Aus v Springboks in the last game in Brisbane, with an Australian team that are still rebuilding (to name but a few). So not all doom and gloom. The last B&I Tour of SA was an anomaly, as we could not really control what COVID threw at us, and rugby was but a small part that it completely screwed over across the world. The tour was still a success in my eyes, as we had competetive matches and a series that could have gone either way. So before we go into full panic mode, let us first see what happens with the B&I v Aus tour as there is still a lot of time for Joe Schmidt to get the Wallabies in shape. They have some good players coming through that just need a little bit more time and experience and with most of the Rugby Championship and the Autumn tours still to come, there is plenty of games to get some into the young legs. Better to have this conversation after the tour. If it is a blowout, then maybe we can have this conversation, as having it now seems a bit premature. If we also assume that the next one is a blowout, how many in the history of B&I tours were blowouts, just for the next one to be awesome again. This is just a timing issue, and hopefully it will not be. Another option will be to do combined tours ... so B&I Lions to Aus & NZ as one tour and the next one against SA & Argentina (with each hosting it alternately). Then throw in the midweek games against some Tier-2 nations from the region instead of provincial or club sides. This will then raise the standard of opposition and also give the Tier-2 nations the opportunity to play the B&I Lions and give them some competetive exposure.

Congratulations Tim on the 100K. Well deserved achievement. You have lots of fans here in Ireland who appreciate the work you put into the channel. The Lions concept is a total anachronism in the modern game and it should be put to bed now. I grew up listening to radio commentaries of the iconic 71 and 74 tours. I well remember the excitement of the radio coverage of Tony Ward's one and only Lions test in 1980. I always loved all the speculation over squad selection and getting used to Welsh, English and Scots players being on "our" team every 3 or 4 yrs. But that was then and now is now. The game is now so much more demanding both physically and psychologically for the players. I used to want to see as many Irish players as possible making the Lions squad and test team. I now hope that Andy Farrell does the decent thing and give our players a much needed summer off. If we were starting from scratch, there would be no Lions tours imposing yet greater demands on overworked players. So I say shut down the Lions and let the rich history of the concept live on......like the 3 and 4 point try, foot rushes, dive passing 9s, captains enquiring on the condition of an injured opposition player and on field half time breaks.

As a fellow irishman I can't agree with you. I still love the concept of lions but do agree it shouldn't wear out the best home nations team for the following year. Not sure how that's to be achieved, but in Andy we trust.

My dad was a huge fan of the lions tour in the amateur era but barely pays attention to it now and I’ve personally lost interest myself since the 95 tour. It realistically is only a test series now with the midweek games usually being quite bad. A three test northern hemisphere vs south hemisphere series that alternates between north and south every 4 years would be better IMO. Imagine an NH team with Ireland , France , England making up most of the squad and a few from Scotland , wales , Italy etc and then a SH side with SA , NZ and a few from aus , Fiji argie, Tonga etc.

Well done Tim. Thank you for the quality of the content. The 100k subscribers is well deserved. You have really become a friend over the last few months and I keep on pushing your videos to all who will listen. I think that Australia will be a much different team than they were on Saturday. I do however think that Argentina should also get a Lions tour, even though only seeing them once every 16 years would be horrible.
