Point the trolling motor upstream to help slow the boat down in heavy current. It is a hard skill to learn to move the back of the boat by using the bow mount slower than the current speed, but it is well worth it.

You should look at the rock hopper that stealth craft makes for prop style outboard motors. It would be an awesome addition to the jack plate. It protects the entire lower unit scag, prop all of it with simple cage type bracket. Just a thought. Other manufacturers also make their own rendition of it but out of all of them it's the best I've seen.

For river fishing on a regular basis, a large flat bottom style boat with an OB that has a jet lower unit is the best way to go, hands-down. Those can navigate water as low as 3-4" depth.

When living in Alaska I had an old 16’ flat bottom Jon boat with a tunnel in the back with a 40 hp jet. I could go anywhere I wanted. It would carry 3 guys and gear in 6” of water. That’s fun

I run a Tracker with a 40hp jet and you can still get in trouble. Hit a rock hard, crack the lower unit and there's $2600 in repairs. This I know. That jack plate would be handy to avoid such a hard hit. And a hand control bow mount trolling motor is the deal for a river boat. Can put the big motor in gear going upstream and stand on the bow using the trolling motor to maneuver around rocks and whatnot. For drifting down stream there's nothing better than a rope and length of chain tied off the back of the boat. I keep about 20lbs of chain in 6' lengths and can add and remove chain as needed.

Get a surface drive and a flat bottom. I have a 18' war eagle with a surface drive and theres almost no place I can't take it. Hunting and fishing in mud, rocks or small creeks is no issue.

I’m thinking a power pole would be ideal for boat control on a river such as this. Cool episode. Remember Minnesota has Muskies too so don’t be shy about fishing over here. Bring that rat over to fish the mighty Mississippi in central Minnesota.
