You are looking at what may be one of the most unique and very critical forms of manufacturing in America. Most of time, any welder who makes these tanks can go work anywhere in the welding industry but not the other way around. Making tanks will test every form of your work skills and ethics. You need good geometry skills as well as lifting and rigging experience. If you are lazy, cheat and cut corners, this type of business will expose you in due time.
They apparently dont have an auto seam welder, or pyramid/pinch rolls to form the main shell, or a manipulator to attach the head. Handwelding becomes the only other option, but it's still probably cheaper to get those shells made by someone else because lots of people make their own no matter how big or small. The other reason is because the shell/sidewall was too thin of material to sit in rolls without the head attached. Rather than having the shell collapse on itself, they welded it vertically until they could attach the head for strength and then set it in rolls horizontally to finish it.
