Time Lapse of Hurricane Sandy hitting New York City October 29th 2012

I captured this by writing a script to grab a copy of the latest image from the webcam NYTimes have pointed out over NYC. Runs from about Noon on the 29th Of October, till about half nine am on the 30th October, 2012.
No idea about why the camera moves, I'm guessing someone knocked the tripod or the building swaying in the wind caused it. It's not one of the most stable setups it would seem (This is the camera: / rwcbf4i1vm )
Source: www.nytimes.com...
EDIT: They have since taken down the image feed that I used to create this time lapse, and have replaced it with a much longer timelapse covering about 48 hours if you want to go and see that it is at the URL above.
Music is Wounded - Kevin MacLeod - incompetech.com/ who provides awesome royalty free tunes.

Beautiful. I love the cloud movement. It was so dark, and the second day, a little bit of blue between clouds.

It was a massive storm front. I don't live in America myself, but personally, the idea of a black-out in new york- to see the lights of its famous skyline dark and dim and quiet- it was truly unnerving for me. Like it or not, New York is *the* icon of the western world- it is the hopes and dreams of songs, the hopes and dreams of immigrants, and a testament to man's ability to screw nature in the face and defy gravity. I really feel for Americans and New York- I hope it can get back on its feet

I am in complete shock after reading the comments on this page. It really is a sad day to be an American. I'm not going to criticize anybody for their particular comment, but some of these comments are pretty bad. Is there no more compassion in this Country? Everyone is so hateful. This is only the beginning, things are going to get much worse. Try to love more and hate less. Oh and BTW Prayers going out to all of the people that were effected.

You might be confusing long-exposure photography with time-lapse. Some long-exposure photography is simulated by taking time-lapse photographs and gradually overlaying them.

You're confusing 'snob' with 'wrong' - That camera was capturing at 1 frame per 60 seconds which i retreived at 20 second intervals to ensure I got them all. Though there were some missed frames presumably from server load, I then scripted extraction of the EXIF from the images and overlaying that on to the image. How exactly isn't that a time lapse?

I bet it wasnt even dark in that section where power went off, theres so much light around the dark section that most of it bounces off the clouds and back down.

presumably, the counter on the top left appears to be for recording time, and resets during the frames allegedly missing from "server load"

Pardon me, one photo every 1 second would lend a 1/5 or 1/10 shutter. 1 photo every 60 seconds would lend a full one second shutter. Just my setting, I'm sure others might have their own preferences for this.

Millions displaced from their homes, without power, without food, millions of dollars in damage to the city, at least 40 people dead in the US alone, another 60+ in the Caribbean. We've seen worse but that doesn't make what you said even remotely amusing.
@henceqed
@henceqed 11 лет назад
ya, that's where I came here from. Better coverage from the bbc than local sources it seems. Anyways, it doesn't look so bad from time lapse pov. I guess its because the rain itself cannot be perceived at that speed.

This is the part where I cant tell whether these sarcastic comments are humour or not... This hurricane was brutal, and checking some pictures of the aftermath should show you people how disastrous this hurricane was, not only to New Yorkers but surrounding states as well. *Directed to the ignorant nations around the world*

those buildings didn't fall down because of aircraft, its because dynamite were put in them and someone pressed the button
@nicktestajr
@nicktestajr 11 лет назад
Generally when I do time lapse I like to adjust my motion blur to match the intervals in which I'm shooting. If i'm shooting one photo every 60 seconds, I'll set my shutter speed to 1/5 or 1/10 so I can get plenty of motion blur so it doesn't look like sped up video. I'm guessing that the camera you used for this either doesn't have shutter control or your shutter speed was faster than 1/5. Either way, I see that it IS indeed a time lapse, and garkeefey, yes, I'm a professional.
@onlylexus
@onlylexus 11 лет назад
Hey those high rises were still standing after these massive winds, thats suprising, because they seem to fall down quite easy when just aircraft crashs into them, and even when they don't, like wtc 7 did, they still fall down. How strange??

Wishful thinking I'm afraid, just had a look at the frame immediately before and after the blackout and no sign of explosion / bright flash. Considering the capture was shooting at 1/60seconds it was unlikely :(

Im not interested in all those comments like "building quality"...and so on. Yes, its a problem that the electrical grid is poor, some wooden buildings outside are creepy and cheap like in the third world. Nevertheless I think of those poor (in both senses) people who have lost everything. Good luck for You all. This wish goes also to all those hit by the storm in the caribean sea like Cuba.

Gayness/bisexually is now another kind of person. A label, such as "black" or "hispanic" or "white" or "emo" or "goth." People accept who people are nowadays, but there are some who taunt those who choose to be a certain way and tell them they will die for being like that. Telling people that isn't what Christians are meant to be. Plus we shouldnt be worrying about a new era trend. We gotta accept what human nature is and move on. It is what us as humans have been doing for the past millennium.
