Time Lapse Photography using a Nikon D5600 or Similar Camera

If you have a camera with built-in time lapse capabilities and want to learn more, this video is for you!:) I demonstrate various considerations using a Nikon D5600 but similar concepts apply to any camera with built-in time lapse.
Apple offers time lapse on various devices but removed configuration options which limits overall creativity. I may create a follow-up video demonstrating time lapse on an iPhone, iPod, etc.

@RealWorld

This will really depend on the effect you want to achieve:). If you want smooth motion, you should try to capture more frequent shots. I have taken many time lapses and will say it is a guessing game to some extent - a game of trial and error:).

Thank you very much for your informative guidance! I have two questions as a newbie. You say it could take around 3k to 4k shots as one-shot-per-second timelapse for a duration of 90 mins. The battery of this camera is rated at around 960 shots per charge. So how do we keep up with the battery in between without interrupting the timelapse operation? And if we get up to the limit of the shutter (i.e 150,000), is there any way to change the shutter or the camera is over? Thanks for your time, sir.

Hello, i would like to know how to do Day to Night time lapse, like how do you change the settings when the environment you're shooting at is getting darker. Thanks in advance
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 лет назад
this might make for a good future video:). you could shoot in manual, but i might suggest aperture priority set to something relatively wide/open like 4.5, ISO of 100, interval of 10-20 seconds (you can play with this as needed), a good tripod, and let the camera do the rest:). The camera will control the shutter speed and adjust as needed to maintain a proper exposure. aperture priority works great if you have a clear sky but may flicker a bit if you have lots of clouds and/or varying light pollution. hope this helps!:)
@RobbieStert

Hi RealWorld! I just got a D5600, but when I do timelapses at night, I get a notification that says "subject too dark". I've tried manually adjusting both the aperture and shutter speed, but it won't take any photos because the camera thinks the subject looks too dark. Thanks for your amazing helpful videos!
@RealWorld

Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I suspect you are taking a time lapse of something at night or relatively dark? When this happens, try manual mode. You will need to set the aperture and shutter, but that is okay.

I have used various cameras over the years and have yet to hit the number on any one camera (and I have shot a bunch:)). Thanks for the vid! Question: why can't I go further than 7 h 59 min for the shooting time?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
This is an interesting discovery/question:). My best guess has something to do with Nikon's maximum limitation of 20 mins per movie clip. If you take 1 shot per second for 7 hours and 59 minutes, you will receive a movie just under 20 mins. Since the interval of the time lapse can vary greatly, this does not make much sense but it is a guess on my part:).

Hello, I love your videos! They are very detailed oriented. I NEED YOUR HELP! I bought this particular camera-model, and I love it for photography. Still, I’ve been struggling to get decent videos from it. Can you please, suggest to me (us) an adequate setting for video? In particular, I’m interested in setting for vlogging. Every time I try to vlog using my camera, the footage is useless. Sometimes, the image is out of focus. Sometimes, the camera is hunting for focus all the time. In both cases, the image useless.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 года назад
Thanks for the post/feedback/question!:) Nikon has been historically challenged when shooting video, however they introduced the AF-P lens which I believe is included with the D5600 kit (check your lens - if you have an AF-S, you have the older version and auto focus will struggle in video). I found AF-P to work well overall. Nonetheless, check your focus mode as well and consider using AF-C ( continuous focus - imaging.nikon.com/support/digitutor/d5600/functions/focusmode_finder.html ). Also, ensure you are using 3D tracking for AF area mode ( imaging.nikon.com/support/digitutor/d5600/functions/afareamode_finder.html ). Hope this helps to some extent!:)

Mirrorless cameras are power hungry and while mirrored cameras are more efficient, their batteries can only last for so long:). Nonetheless, if you have multi batteries, you might swap between shots (do you best to not move the camera).

Both are solid. In addition, they share the same size sensor and resolution. The big difference between the two is max ISO capabilities. The max ISO on the D7100 is 6400 whereas the D7200 is 25600. The higher ISO is good for low light situations. Outside of the ISO both are similar with a few other minor exceptions.

Dang! Great video. Very helpful. I've been wanting to learn time lapse. Also, you have both 3400 and the d5600?! I have the d3400. What's your take on the focus focus system compared w 3400 and 7200? I'm considering upgrading for wildlife shots since l live in Alaska and want to photograph bears and eagles. My friend is selling his 7200. Your thoughts?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) The D5600 has more focal points which might be of help when tracking various forms of moving wildlife, however I rarely depend/rely on many. I tend to leverage a center focal point and track the subject by simply moving the camera. If you have a camera with more focal points and the subject moves past the center point, the additional points should help to keep the subject in focus. Sony has always touted a bunch of focus points, but I simply do not use a bunch although I can see the benefits:). Since you plan to shoot in the wild to some extent, I like the D7200 over the D5600. The D7200 has a weather sealed body which is nice for the elements, more focal points, and faster max shutter (1/8000 vs 1/4000; most will not hit 1/4000 but nice to know you could reach 1/8000 if needed). Depending on your budget, you might also consider the D500. I did a review on the D500 and really liked it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XNZ1-l_w4fs.html

RealWorld Great information. Thanks for such a thoughtful reply. I'll consider the 7200. I'm not in the market for the d500 as I need to purchase a long lens as well. I use the 70-300 kit lens currently. I'm reading reviews and looking at tamron 150-600mm.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Glad to be of help!:) The D3400 and D7200 contain the same sized sensor and I suspect image quality will be similar, however the D7200 is a bit more rugged:). I like the tamron 150-600 (amzn.to/2GCzoCD) and might consider reviewing/testing at some point.

hi . please help me i want to buy a canon 80d or nikon d5600 which would you prefer ?? thanks .
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 лет назад
I have reviewed both:). They both take great shots and video but if I had to choose, I might lean towards the 80d for video and d5600 for photos:). Canon has always done a great job with AF and their STM lenses are some of the best for video in my opinion. Nikon removed the AA filter tends to sharpen images slightly (nice for photos). Nikon also released their AF-P lens which does a good job at AF on video but Canon has a slight edge in this area:).

@@jhonjhonsuarez9703 You will get some great shots with the 80d as well. Given the 70/30 ratio, I would lean towards the 80d (I would consider the same for 80/20):). i want to do remote photography by using snapbridge on my d3400 by using a nikon wifi adapter Wu 1A .. is that possible ?? plz reply . .thanks
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Unfortunately, I do not believe so. The WU-1a is not compatible with the D3400 and snapbridge will not allow for remote shooting on the D3400 (snapbridge will allow files to be transferred by not for remote shooting (snapbridge will allow for remote shooting on the D500 and a few others but not the D3400)).

I could use your help. I am planning on buying a new lens, I am stuck between the 35mm & 50mm Nikkor lens. I plan on taking both landscape and portrait pictures, but I don't know which to pick. Would the 35mm be good for portraits and group shots or would the 50mm be better? Help. Haha!
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Thanks for the post/question:). Both will take equally sharp shots - I have used both and they are great in my opinion. I typically run with one - the fixed 50:). Why? I like a bit more range/zoom. I have taken many portraits with the fixed 50 and find that I do not have to get too close to the subject. I created a video using the fixed 50 on a D7000 for portraits which worked great (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dun-ANF5evQ.html). The wider the better for landscape though:). Could you do landscapes with a fixed 50? Absolutely. Could you do portraits with a fixed 35? Absolutely:). I you plan to do my portraits, I might lean towards the 50. If you plan to do more landscapes, I might lean towards the 35:).

There are many complaints about flickering with D7200 inbuilt time-lapse. Did you experience any flickering with d5600 or D7200 if you have used it . Also did the battery last when you shot for 3 hours plus. What would happen if battery gets drained and gets switched off. After replacing the battery can we continue existing time-lapse. It would be great if you could make a video on that and I bet there would be many people who would be wanting to know that. By the way you should have been a professor or teacher your way of explaining is great 👌
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Thanks for the post/feedback/question!:) Flickering is typically caused by a change in the ISO. If the camera is set to auto ISO and the time lapse is relatively long, conditions may change that will cause the the ISO to auto adjust. Slight adjustments to the ISO can cause flicker when not implemented in a incremental fashion. The D5600 will shoot a relatively long time on a full battery providing the preview is off to save battery:). How long will it go? Good question:). This will depend in part on the number of images taken as a picture every 5 seconds will consume more battery than a picture every 60 seconds. I have stretched the battery for a few hours though, but I do not recall the lapse (perhaps one shot every 15 seconds?). What happens if the battery runs out? I believe the camera will render the time lapse with the number the taken images before the battery is completely out ... not 100% certain though:).
@roninr8199
@roninr8199 6 лет назад
RealWorld will the battery last 7 hr 59min and 59sec 😀. Auto iso is absolutely required for people shooting from sunset to complete darkness or vice versa. Might be you can create a video without auto iso from dark to sunrise without flickering :)
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
LOL ... not certain about 8hrs:). The camera is rated for 820 shots on a full battery though - curious to run some tests on that claim:). Might be interesting to create a video addressing the flicker issue:).

RealWorld I have read many reviews that d5600 can take around 430 to 460 shots only in real world usage when compared to d5500 which could take more than 800 shots. That's why I guess nikon has discontinued d5500 and reduced the price of d5600 to clear their stock..

I saw nikon 3400 for with a bundle $485 do u recommend me buy it? Or get another one. I have s8 plus. Or should i stay with my phone camara?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 лет назад
Thanks for the post/question David. I see the D3400 bundled with the 18-55 for $496 which is solid as of today (amzn.to/2GX7KNF). I also see an option to add the 70-300 for extra $100 which is not bad. I tested the 70-300 with good results in opinion (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1RaXjNuD6ls.html). Camera phones are getting better but will always have two major limitation which is the sensor size and lack of lenses. The one nice feature is portability. Camera phones are portable which is nice. If you want to get into photography and move to the next level, the D3400 or D5600 is a solid option in my opinion. The main difference between the D3400 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cORINOaLSTk.html) and D5600 is screen (along with a few others, but the screen is the first notable difference).

Thanks for the post/feedback/suggestion:). I took a quick look at Polarr ... Polarr is good for editing but not managing. Polarr is like a trimmed back version of Photoshop and works fairly well in my opinion ... you load an image > make edits > save/export > load another image and repeat:). Lightroom allows you to categorize all images in addition to making edits, etc. Lightroom doubles as a photo management and edit tool.

Nikon d5600 or canon 600d Which one have good quality images, good colour of photos

I would lean towards the D5600 for various reasons ... no AA filter (anti-aliasing filter which tends to soften images to some extent), higher resolution, higher max ISO, better battery life, etc.
