Time Team S16-E03 The Wedding Present: Scargill, County Durham

Ten years ago two archaeologists got married. The groom bought for his beloved bride a wreck of a building, Scargill Castle, in the remote wilds of County Durham. This decrepit gatehouse and scattering of ruined walls was reputed to have once been a medieval stronghold in a lawless, violent landscape that was fought over for centuries by English and Scottish kings.

I think I've been watching too much Time Team. I was digging in my garden the other day and turned up a small sherd of red pottery...instantly, I thought "Ooh, maybe it's Roman!' Then I remembered -I live in Newfoundland...

@@JuleyC True...there are still undiscovered Viking settlements here...and older ones too- read Farley Mowatt's 'The Farfarers'. He says there were people from the Shetlands & Orkneys living here before the Vikings. Makes a good case, fascinating book.

it could be Roman! The ocean did not prevent ships from reaching here from the Mediterranean. We just have no records of ships lost at sea. If Vikings made it to newfoundland who had trade with Romans, there could be Samian ware in Newfoundland. Look for more.

No offense meant to anyone, but one thing I've noticed is that they seem to not talk to the historians much. They said, "they seem to have gotten better land further south and not done much with this site." Is it possible that the reason they have such huge walls/foundations is that they started to build on the site (which I understand can take decades to complete a large structure) and then acquired Haverah Park which they stated was several days travel south of this site, decided this one was too much trouble to bother with as they now had a better place to spend their money and just stopped work on Scargill "Castle"? I mean it makes more sense to me than going to the expense and difficulty of building twice in the Tudor period on what seems to be an inferior and less desirable property to live when they have one fit for a King. What do you think?
@featherstone8093
@featherstone8093 4 года назад

Depending on what business the King needed to transact in these five locations, he wouldn’t necessarily have needed to stay overnight in each location. He might have overnighted in only two or three locations, so could have sent his wardrobe etc on ahead while he diverted to a smaller place that might not have had the facilities to receive him, handed out justice, collected taxes, ensured his place-holders were still loyal and running things his way, and then taken a brisk ride with his guards and officers to whatever castle was prepared to provide banquet fare worthy of the king.

Easy to see that there are 2 Scargills (and Mick was right from the start of the vid!), and that the couple were fd by a fake statement of the property and its history. The real 1300s-1500s Scargill "castle" is further to the south in the mention of West Riding. This might be the 1000-1300s origins of the Scargills (or original North Riding cum Durham), and kept as their rural retreat, but not worthy of a king's visit.

It was the concept of Mick and producer Tim Taylor. They had previously worked on "Time Signs" etc. Mick met Tony at one of the intro courses he did on archaeology. Tony had had previously performed and written various period comedies e.g. Black Adder and Maid Marion and her Merry Men. Most of the rest are from an organisation called Wessex Archaeology.
@scarletfluerr

Phil is from Wessex, the others are from universities like Cambridge, York and others. Phil and John Gator have honorary degrees making them Drs.
@markclemente1503
@markclemente1503 4 года назад
scarletfluerr nope. That doesn’t make them doctors. They only received an honorary degree but that means nothing for marketing yourself in the field. An honorary degree is typically just given to someone who has contributed greatly to that specific field. An honorary doctorate just means that they’ve done amazing things for archaeology and showing the entire world what archaeology is about. Time team allowed more people to come to archaeology in the 1990s and 2000s. Now that the show ended, the UK is actually having a shortage of archaeologists (could potentially be caused by the cancellation of the show). That’s why they received their honorary degrees though. Let’s not muddle the titles of those who have a PhD or want to get a PhD (like myself in archaeology) and just say anyone can be called “doctor.”

what about the possibility of the Medieval Warm Period and lack of crops to help the decision to move to a better area ?
@markclemente1503
@markclemente1503 4 года назад
I think that’s probable as to why the land stopped being used. The medieval warm period was from the 10th-13th century. So it’s possible they didn’t know how the crops would yield when they tried settling there around the 12th century or so. It really all depends on when they got there and tried to start building. If it was winter then they definitely wouldn’t have known. If it was summer it’s possible they didn’t know YET until the first crops started growing.

Since all broken pottery, glassware and similar artefacts end up today miles away from their origins, in municipal rubbish dumps, how are archaeologist going to work in the distant future when looking at our present day world? Or is it believed that all knowledge and history of people will be recorded so no need for any of this exploration? In the digital age, the nature of records may well be very ephemeral - temporary in the extreme.

Maybe we're destined to destroy ourselves and there won't be anyone to research our archeology... 😁 Though more likely they will research and see that garbage is moved around.
@stewartw.9151
@stewartw.9151 4 года назад
Yup - I can imagine them digging up a city rubbish dump and coming to the conclusion that "these people used to live really close together, and they made amazing amounts of rubbish! No doubt of some religious significance"
@SkunkApe407
@SkunkApe407 3 года назад
Have none of you heard of a midden? Humans have made rubbish heaps since our beginning. Roads, building foundations, utility service lines, and our excessive use of plastics will leave plenty, by way of archaeological record. That's ignoring the fact that not all rubbish ends up in a landfill.

@yiasemi
@yiasemi 3 года назад
I still use the word barmpot to mean an idiot, I'm from the North of England originally. Barm is also the head of a pint of beer. Even southerners use the phrase barmy, as in the barmy army of English cricket supporters who follow the national team around the world. Nice to think Barmkin was the protection behind which we could hold our beer and stop the Scots getting their hands on it.

He said it might have been a pond. I guess it might've fallen in and died and was too difficult to remove... Although that suggests disease issues subsequently...

Perhaps it was several days dead and rotting. Push it in a hole and shovel in the dirt. Or maybe it was butchered right there and the remains buried. Or maybe it was rustled by Scots raiders, butchered and the skeleton left.

So, they love archeology, they breathe archeology but they couldn't pick up a spade and investigate their own property?
@carlosperez-gb1fk
@carlosperez-gb1fk 10 лет назад
The problem for them is that the property has been scheduled which makes it a historically preserved site. To do anything on the property requires special permission from the government which can be difficult to obtain and full of limitations.

Pseudo-Science bent horrifically towards so-called entertainment. Pseudo-Comic relief by the guy with the filthy hat; sorry, but he is not funny at all. Three days to perform archaeology? Was so enjoying this and then lo and behold 6 mins in and that freaking woman had to appear. Why??? She has got to be the biggest waste of space ever on a tv show and more to the point, knows nothing!! Take away the experts who she does nothing but nod at constantly and her written script and she's still just the secretary she always was. Jeez, I can't stand that woman.
@cathjj840
@cathjj840 5 лет назад
She's a Saxon specialist, so naturally would defer to others whose speciality is more à propos for digs concerning other eras. But what's your problem? Why the disdainful venom so disproportionate for what cannot be called a purposeful offense? Psychologists have observed (male ones) that many men seem to have difficulty 'hearing' what female voices say. It just doesn't register, as if the sound were cut off between the ear and the brain. Some of them will get a message about something of particular interest to them (sports scores, for example) but not as perfectly as from a male voice. I haven't seen any explanation for this phenomenon. Could this phenomenon apply to you?
