Just an idea🤔rip out all the sensors, all the fancy doo daa electronics and have a basic 3litre diesel engine because that shape body is great and you have no worries about annoying warnings popping up,just an idea🤔🤔🇬🇧🇬🇧oh yea what’s happening about that triumph spitfire project?🤟🤟🇬🇧🇬🇧
hi you need to watch LR Time then change your oil again from what he calls 5w dumbass to 5w 40 as he makes a good argument for the thinner oil contributing to early snapping of the crankshaft also telling you how to check if you need to fit a modified oil pump.....enjoying your videos thanks
I’ve had one, and will have another in a heartbeat! They are massively complicated beasts, 90% related to the canbus system. The amount of times mine crapped itself, put the suspension in access mode etc, was usually down to a knackered brake bulb or headlight bulb! Best truck I’ve ever had! There is nothing else out there that is such a fantastic allrounder for the money!
I remember taking off the dust cover underneath my Mercedes 124 series, a few years ago, to tighten belt tensioner. No car lift, so just jacked up one side to crawl underneath. When I loosened one end of it, the entire "thick metal" cover immediately landed on my chest and I could not move. Had to somehow loosen the rest of the bolts, then siddle from underneath the car, with this absolutely heavy metal on my chest and tummy. It's was absolutely something you would expect a tank to have. That was Mercedes benz over engineering the older cars. But it never let me down, broke down ever. So I gave it away......😂like so many of my former cars
Interesting stuff Ben. 19.9k subscribers, you are just saving the MR2 video to celebrate 20k! The only Land Rover I have practical experience with was an old MOD Lightweight, a bit more primitive than your tow wagon.
Suspension height issues can be usually one of 2 things somethings the wrong bulbs in the taillights (seriously!) or a wiring fault under the drivers side sill trim panel where the main look runs.
Drip tray LOL there's a LR owner talking, If you had not bought the Gash Spec bottom of the range (ok you can get a lower spec one with non air suspension) but manual as well! You went for entry level ! LOL! Ive had 3 discos and 2 freelanders and I can say that my wife's 2 citroens have broken down...not on days Ive needed to take her car to work as one of my LRs would not start but at least owning a disco3 you can drag the wife's Citroen C1 out of a ditch sideways. Great video and I agree as a Disco3 owner it is a great car to own although I have a HSE with the heated seats and twatnav cream leather and loads of warning lights on the dash! PS. the steering wheel needs the factory HSE spec radio to bluetooth too, the radio tells the cruise control on the Can Bus lines as I understand it as a mechanic of 30yrs. Great video will pop my disco round to you for a service and wash please xx
Ben, a great episode as ever 😊 I've got a Disco four and was a bit concerned about taking one on due to their reputation. It does throw up random faults and the build quality is questionable (trim falls apart when you look at it 😂) but as a tow vehicle nothing compares. I tow a converted Horsebox and it does it with ease. mpg dropped by 0.09mpg, you could barely feel it was lugging anything behind😊 Looking forward to more episodes 😊😊
A way to deal with the error codes; Find the computer responsible, introduce it to the weight of a lump hammer utilising a decent velocity, computer problems sorted... :P
When you replace that land rover discovery. Yet we're fought about buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Because I guess they sell them over in the UK. They're pretty good Port utility vehicles
Amazing how cheap the basic service cost is if done DIY. Keep us updated re the cruise control and steering wheel buttons. 👍 suits you sir, great wagon
I’m really enjoying your content and variety of cars! I’m on my 4th Disco, now running a 2016 D4. For the money, nothing compares and capability wise, they’re no different to the latest LR product. If you haven’t already, clean the MAF and MAP sensors; they get full of carbon deposits and will eventually throw up errors put it into the dreaded limp home mode. Cleaning the MAF may also improve the MPG. It’s a really simple job 👍🏼
We had a disco like yours. Did numerous journeys from Oxford to Cornwall and used for everything and never had any issues. Loved the car and only sold due to not needing a 4x4
Id have done the fuel filter personally. You did the rest inc cabin filter. You said basic service which is a term many main dealers say full lol. Reassuring isnt it that at least youknow its been done
Had that engine in my Jaguar XF. Totally bullet proof - but it did get frequent oil changes - not 19k apart!!! Did you r re place the sump plug??? You’re not supposed to re-use them though I’m sure it’s not necessary. The Jag always gave silly error messsges also - like low fuel level when you’ve just filled up. Just slap it, tell it not to be silly, turn it off and on again and all is fixed.
Another fab video Ben. Really do enjoy your channel, and you obviously put so much time and effort into editing. Never had a Disco 3, but would like one. I currently have a P38 Westminster, and a Skoda Octavia 20015, and a 2023 Transit... and the P38 has been more reliable than the skida and the ford. Ignore the haters. Ps. New lady... witwoo RU-vid is paying off 🎉
As far as I can work out the discovery is a good reliable 4x4 and the only thing that seems to let them down is the electronics And as you've said they sold 100s of thousands of them so if the majority of them are good then ownership of one is as good as anything else of similar age and milage My old volvo v70 2.4 petrol does an average of 34mpg and still runs like a watch been up and down from Bedfordshire to Devon quite a few time with absolutely no issues So there you go
On these engines you should always release the oil filter first of all or it'll hold nearly a litre of waste oil then when you put the sump plug back In and then change the filter any waste oil ends up in the sump and mixes with your fresh oil !! I used to work for JLR and the amount of apprentices that ended up overfilling them was mad as you got a metered amount of oil for that vehicle from The dispenser, of course then it would run up on its own oil and rev to destruction!! And you really don't want that Ben 👍👍great episode 👌 great vehicles 👌
Glad you're enjoying your Discovery, sensors are such a pain, 95% of the time these pop up and it's the sodding sensor that needs replacing. Just spent £80 for one on our Mini Cooper, nothing wrong with the car, it was the sensor that went wrong. Never had this with older cars, their sensor was when it stopped or made a horrible noise.
My father's got an S-Type Jag that does very little mileage as he's 90. Doesn't stop the thing eating various sensors on a regular basis. Hardly a year goes by without the need for it to go into garage for some sensor or other. Sensors must be a fantastic earner for manufacturers.
Please put wheels under the sills when you go under your LR or any other car... electronics doesnt belong to a car. Turn off key works fine also on a SAAB with limp mode light without reason. Great Video
Had a few d3’s and now on a d4. Can’t think of anything else I’d want to own as a family vehicle. Flippin’ hate that junction at Okells, nearly been collected several times.
The cabin filter you took out may have been a charcoal activated one as it was evenly dark all over on the video, whereas the one you replaced it with was a cheapy non charcoal activated filter.
I have a classic RR, a p38 4.0 and a L322 3.6 tdv8. Costs...... Next to nothing if you do it yourself. Reliability all comes down to maintenance, but the spares are so cheap. Why wouldn't you? Wouldn't go any newer than that because new cars and electronics frighten me. Even the L322 ecu's are pretty primitive and easily replaced if needed. Your Disco is a peach but keep all maintenance up otherwise she will bight you. Top job TC, can't wait for the MR.2 P.S. he really skimps on his screen wash.😂
I’ve had 3 of them here in Australia! Great cars if looked after Ben ! I would have done the fuel filter too though if same as 3.0 tdv6 it’s under the floor mate. Also not sure about the 2.7 but check to see if there is a pipe on the left hand side of engine with a rubber bung on it as you cam suck the oil out from it there so you don’t even have to lie under it 👍👍
I have a discovery 3 but auto, it has meltdowns all the time with random messages it's just a landy thing. Try getting the tracking done to help with the suspension fault it sorted mine out after numerous trial and error with it
Welcome to land rover ownership my advice doing any work , jacking up the rover I recommend unplugging battery, I own a possessed 07 land rover lr3 hse when fix one thing something else brakes , never I mean never crawl under this vehicle that has a air suspension always use Jack's to put the weight on , I replaced all control arms all air suspension springs air compressor now I have a suspension fault , I replaced both front height senors now still won't raise don't get me wrong I love the lr3 I only paid 1100. Us dollars from copart , I also had to replace radiator, water pump, all antifreeze hoses , steering shaft , funny thing is the rover suspension worked perfectly until I replaced all suspension parts 😮 I kinda wish I bought a discovery 2 because of solid axles , for bigger tires I think they are better for offroad, I seen some here in US really build up , I also bought a Terrafirma rear swing out tire carry and rock sliders I highly recommend, check your spare tito make sure the hoist works , I wish mine was a 6 speed. Manual mine automatic, good luck if you not hear of Lr time channel this channel all about land rover lr 3/4
I swapped from Land Rover to Jeep about 8 years ago, and haven't regretted it. I love driving Land Rover's, but you just get sick of all the stupid little faults and spending your life under them or in the engine bay. Biggest difference I've noticed is yours is a base model, so is my Grand Cherokee, but I have cruise control, blue tooth, navigation etc and I'll bet the original prices weren't that different. Also they are both V6 diesel 3 liters and pull 3 ton loads. Yet the Jeep will do 30+ mpg. Are you sure yours doesn't have a dodgy O² sensor? Or something. This is not a who's is best post, just an observation. Both companies appear to be going premium only and pricing us normal folk out of a new car.
The land rover specialist over the road from me charges a bomb to do a service, they wanted £120 to put it my TD5 on diagnostics, they got told to fuck off. got to done for £25. Also they filters for the TD5 are cheap to buy, most expensive part is the oil. i use the edge stuff, also i use ITG panel filters for the sake of ease.
Are you sure about the engine? It could also be a Ford or BMW engine. 2 good channels for you to view, LR Time, with Christian and Vera. They are German and take their Discos apart totally and rebuild them for fun! Lots of videos that may be a useful reference for you and Simon at Powerful UK, he has loads of videos also and sells products both original and in house designed for Land Rovers plus has a very useful OBD tool that would sort all your codes out quite easily too!
I have owned 3 Disco3, yes you learn to live with the "bing bongs"...its all worth it. What other vehicle has more load space than a Transit connect, carry 7 people in comfort, tow 3.5 tonnes, go across deserts and forests off road whilst travelling with S class suspension. Even today nothing else comes close. And never failed to get me home..
Looks Like You've MADE IT !! Nice work 20k !! Here's to you blowing up like you deserve to !! 250k Subs by this time next year would be a nice shout !! Love the channel, awesome to see it growing for you !!
I,ve always said that every car is great but its hidden under a confusing mass of computers and sensors. If only you could strip all that off to leave you with the car its meant to be.
I don;t have kids, a wide nor a husband, not even a girlfriend...or boyfriend. Just me, myself, and I. And I am doing good thanks. Hope you are doing good.
Nothing wrong with Landrover Discovery. 99% of the time it’s because no one gets them serviced or pays them any attention just like any car. If you run them into ground what do you expect? They are also aimed at people with money which usually means they get looked after by their mechanic so they don’t see what goes wrong if anything.
