@@KILLER.KNIGHT Most are both oppresor & oppressed -- depending on time & circumstance. This video starts with Alfred The Great in the 800s. By that time, the island of Britain had been under occupation for 800 continuous years, and was being invaded again by thieves & pirates from Scandinavia. After a century or more of fighting off this invasion, another invasion occured from the shores of Normandy. Welcome to the real world.

Australasia Confederation Mapping it was all the earl of Warwick’s doing he is nicknamed the king maker. He helped Edward become king and after falling out with him put Henry back on the throne
Napoleón Bonaparte did you know that Richard III might be innocent of killing the princes. I’m not saying he didn’t do it but Tudor and Beaufort had motive and opportunity too. Richard III May have suffered badly from English propaganda. Bonaparte would know
If anyone would like to know the music, it’s not specifically ‘Jupiter’, ‘Thaxted’, or ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’. It is actually a reworking of the music by Geoff Knorr, who composed this version for the videogame: Civilization V. It is called ‘Elizabeth’s Peace Theme’.
0:42 Fun fact: Aethelred means 'well advised' and his title 'Unready' was originally 'Unraed' meaning 'unadvised'. Aethelred the Unadvised. His name and title was a total pun.
Thank you for this informative comment. I’m sure on day, I’ll find someone in real life who knows of British monarchs to share this with. Maybe over some coffee. Ha!
What I love about Æthelred the Unready is that his name wasnt given to him because he "wasnt ready", his name is actually a pun. In old English, æthelred ment "well advised" so as a joke, people started calling him Æthelred the unred, or (loosely translated) Æthelred the poorly advised. Over time, the Unred part of his name turned into Unready and the word unred became disused and obsolete. So even back in the 10th century, the people of, what is now, England loved a good pun
It would have been something like 'unræde', which roughly meant 'of poor counsel', and unræde does almost sound like unready in today's version of the English language. It's just something that got slightly lost in translation over the millennia.
Fun fact: The last English King of England was Edgar Ætheling, born in Hungary in 1052, the son of Edward the Exile, who fled to Hungary along with his brother Edmund escaping from the Viking conqueror of England, Cnut the Great's reign. They stayed in the court of Saint Stephan of Hungary, but after assassins sent by Cnut showed up in Hungary to kill them, they fled to the Kievan Rus. In the court of Yaroslav the Wise in Kiev, where they encountered the exiled pagan princes of Hungary, Endre and Levente. After a pagan uprising in Hungary, Endre was made King of Hungary by the pagans in exchange for religious protection, which he gave them. During his reign Edward and Edmunt moved back to Hungary where Edgar Ætheling was born. After Harold Godwinson was excommunicated by the Pope and killed in battle during William the Bastard's invasion of England, Prince Edgar moved back to England and in London was elected King of England by the Witan Council, but never officially crowned, and he shortly resisted William's advances until the Normans overran England. Edgar was also accompanied by the bastard son of King Endre of Hungary named George,. After the Norman Victory, Edgar and George fled to Scotland together. Edgaw would have many more adventures and George would establish the still living Clan Drummond.
For a moment I thought they cloned each other and then I thought it was an editing error... So you could probably guess who's gonna be winning stupid award this year
Note: I'm pretty sure all the territories in red are just the territories the monarch of the UK is the head of, independent or not, since designating what time when dominions like Canada or Australia became is difficult, since these countries got independence gradually.
I just looked that painting up: it’s actually from the 18th century, and was done by a guy named Samuel Woodforde. There aren’t any existing portraits of Alfred the Great from his own time.
RIP Queen Elizabeth The II, she will remain in our hearts forever after the unthinkable had happened to her, she will be missed always, and will watch over us in a new wonderful world above.
Edward the martyr: i must die, it is my destiny as a martyr Edward the Unready: but I'm not ready Edit: NO I did not mean "ethelred the unready" I meant EDWARD the unready. It was intentional 🤦🏼♂️ so shUSH
Actually his name unready meant in old English well advised but unready meant not well advised so his entire name is a terrible pun even though he was an ok king the 2nd time.
@@T60601 that is just not true lmao. Germany was the only rival to Britain post Napoleonic wars, and only after 1871. France never again recovered its status as a superpower. Britain dominated Europe by ensuring that no other power became dominant. Germany and Britain Ruled Europe, and Britain ruled the world.
An English Pub just closed that was constructed in 793, I came here to see what King was around in 793, I was surprised to realise that pub was there longer than the British monarchy
I just want to point out how exceptional the syncing of Thaxted was to the timeline, with Plantagenets and Stuarts being the melody, and of course the slow fading out at the end...
These are just the Kings and Queens think of all the different Dukes and Duchess' and Earls and Princes and all their Families... for centuries. I'm an American and I'm still curious about the place my forefathers decided to leave as to not be ruled over by royalty. I do love our British friends and their culture. I think one of the best things that ever happened to the world is when we decided to become friends and allies, forging the west as a beacon of freedom. It's all very fascinating to me. . . History and the people remembered.
George II: Time to form the british empire George III: Time to loose brain cells and weaken the British empire George IV: let me fix your mistakes dumbass William IV: Let me help out Victoria: Hold my beer fellas, Victoria will show you how it's done
Tbf, the Empire wouldn’t have been pushed to become the power that it became had the Americans not revolted, Spain would probably continue to have the largest empire with the British in second place
People underestimate the impact of the Civil War and the restoration. Once the puritans realised the monarchy would be restored and their miserable tyranny was over they left for the American colonies. How can we be surprised that 100 years later Anti monarchists in the colonies would be well, anti-monarchist?
Victoria: *I want that thing!* Earth: *You can't have that thing!* Earth: *Nnnnnngggg!!!! Okay you can have that thing,But no more.* Victoria: *I want that thing!* *And Repeat.*
DS Katolero I know it’s a joke but the monarchs of the empire don’t even have much power. Victoria didn’t control the British empire in the manner Napoleon controlled the first French empire
Extremely well made. Music queues were brilliant. Only one standout error in terms of portrait. Queen Jane portrait is wrong. The Queen Regnant after young King Edward VI was Jane Grey. The portrait is that of the Queen Consort to Henry VIII, Jane Seymour. I do wish there was a Holbein or Hobein-esque portrait of Jane Grey in existence.
Love this video, but the pic of “Jane” is actually Henry’s wife, Jane Seymour, rather than Lady Jane Grey who was 9 days queen. Poor Jane, I always felt bad for her😢
Thank you for including Queen Jane (Lady Jane Grey, the 9 days queen). Most timelines of the monarchy don’t include her because she never had a coronation but she was in fact proclaimed Queen (although Mary I was the rightful heir).
It may be surprising for a French but I sometimes think it would have been better if King Henry II d'Anjou succeded in unifying England and France in one kingdom to last. This way many wars, deaths, destruction would have been avoided and maybe the whole Europe would have been even more prosperous.
As a French, I do agree completely. You would have spoken French ! As the plantagenêt spoke French, lived in France, were born and died mainly in France. And the entiere world would... Note that afer the French victory in 1453 (due to the help of the Scottish), the english kingdom could have completely disappeared. Too bad we didnt seize that chance 😂
There is a big error in this video. It shows Indian subcontinent under the reign of George III, IV, and William IV. Until 1858, India was run by East India company, not British Monarch. Victoria became the first British Monarch of India in 1858.
Even as an Indian I didn't observe although I was completely aware of what you remarked. It's impressive to know this much about India even as a foreigner(probably).
The last Anglo-Saxon King Harald II Godwenson, was killed at the Battle of Hastings, in October 1066. His daughter Gytha of Wessex fled to Denmark, and later married Vladimir Monomakh, Prince of Smolensk from the Rurik dynasty. Their first son, Mstislav (in the Western chronicles, his name is Harald), is a common ancestor for Eduard III and his wife, Philippa of Hainault . Through this marriage, the blood of the Godwensons returned home and is an integral part of all subsequent English and British ruling dynasties. Such perturbations happen in history.
Another such perturbation where Britain is concerned: Edgar the Ætheling, designated successor of Harold II and briefly regarded as King of England in opposition to William the Conqueror, died in exile sometime after 1125. His sister, Margaret of Wessex, had by that time married King Malcolm III of Scotland, and while her daughter Matilda became the first wife of King Henry I and thus ancestor of the Plantagenets, three of her sons, Edgar, Alexander and David, all became Kings of Scotland in their turn, King David I being the ancestor of all further Scottish sovereigns (as well as the Bourbon Kings of France, but that’s another story). There would be marriages between the two bloodlines over the centuries, the definitive union occurring with the marriage of King James IV of Scotland to Margaret Tudor- daughter of King Henry VII- and finally realising the reunion when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English Throne as King James I. Every English/British sovereign since then has been an (almost) undisputed heir of the House of Wessex (I say “almost” because I must perforce take into account the Jacobite line- the marriage of King Charles I to Princess Henriette Marie of France was yet another union between branches of Margaret of Wessex’s bloodline, and while George I and his heirs were not drawn from this stock, James II/VII- and by extension, James the Old Pretender and Bonnie Prince Charlie, both of whom led insurrections against the Hanoverians- was. Though Charlie’s younger brother, Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal-Duke of York, was the last of the direct Stuart line and the last of this line to publicly acknowledge his claim to the throne- and even then, he did nothing to advance it- all further Jacobite heirs from Carlo Emanuele IV of Sardinia to the current heir, Franz Herzog von Bayern, are still descendants of Charles I via his daughter, Henrietta Maria Stuart, Duchess of Orleans, and thus beneficiaries of this Stuart/Bourbon bloodline).
@Observer of the Northern Lights I already knew this, but I'm glad you mentioned it, because I think a lot of people have the misconception that William the Conqueror was the first king of England or that the current royals are only descended from the Norman monarchs.
Yeah I thought so because the resemblance between her and Edward the 6th was striking in the two photos, and that would be explainable because they are mother and son, but if it was lady Jane grey they would be cousins which would probably not look too alike since they share less dna about 12.5%
