As winter has now arrived, I have halted any further renovations of my New Brunswick cabin until next year. This fourth video in the series shows installing new roofing, adding new supports, and at least one unexpected surprise. Actual renovation costs are included at the end.

I would take some of those long roof planks you salvaged and put across the house wrap at intervals temporarily, with screws. If it were here on the NW US coast the winds would try to rip it loose, and shred it, maybe there too. Amazing progress, love the videos😄

You definitely have my respect. Taking on a construction project like this is a daunting task. It’s easy to get discouraged, specially when those unforeseen hiccups materialize. I've done a lot of home renovating in my 66+ years and every time there's a hiccup with a project I just say, "that's what you call adventures in home ownership". You're doing a great job and will have something you'll be proud of when you're finished with it.

All of the money was well spent. You still have your health to be able to do work safely to include the demo work and the cleanup afterwards so that helps considerably. The hiring of knowledgeable people (do not attempt this at home, these men are trained professionals) to complete work beyond your immediate capabilities displays your thoroughness in thinking thru an issue after weighing your options. Looking forward to the next video and the spring time continuing saga of the cabin refurbishment. You are a "lucky man" and we are grateful for the unselfishness you exhibit by sharing your "adventures".

I am an 81-year-old great-great-grandmother who can’t even change a battery in a smoke alarm anymore but I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You are most certainly in much better physical condition at the end of the summer than when you began, and your ability to solve problems is amazing. I can hardly wait to see the finished product. Bear in mind, I hope you finish it within the next 15 years or I might not be around to see it.

I really enjoy the past couple of videos of you at the cabin. It actually looks like you’re having a lot of fun and you’re learning a lot as you go along and both of those things are important. I hope during the winter months you’re able to maybe camp somewhere in the south where it’s a little bit warmer and you can prepare yourself for the spring time for around the cabin. I also like these longer videos. It’s really interesting to see all the steps that you’ve taken to work on your cabin. Please continue to post these great videos and I can’t wait until the next one.

I left the oil patch had a well paying job and benefits after a 18 hour day came home and said to the wife I don’t want to do this anymore we sold 80% of our stuff bought a small trailer and then moved 4000 km to NB it isn’t all sunshine and roses but we have built the best quality of life we’ve ever had.

Nice work Slim. If you're needing any FREE tarps for protecting outside 'stuff' & lumber/firewood, the fabric-like covers that lumber companies use to truck shipments to retail lumberyards, is usually free for the asking at your local lumber outlet. The fabric 'breathes' a little, so you don't need to worry about rot underneath.

Used to be readily available for free. I'm finding lately that it's harder to get. Seems that everyone has caught on to this, especially in spring and supper when people are using it for landscaping projects.

It’s funny. I’m 49 y/o and I’m still thoroughly enthralled watching heavy machinery at work like a 5 y/o lol I am always amazed/impressed at how accurate, precise and deft an excavator can be when in the skilled hands of a trained and experienced operator. That guy had obviously done that job a “few” times before lol. Nice work Slim 👍The key to doing such big renos like this is knowing when it’s safer, quicker, less aggravating and a lot of times cheaper, to call in a professional. You mentioned that you wished you had gotten a little further along before winter set in but I have to tell you, I’m impressed by how much you got done. Especially considering you did most of the work yourself PLUS filming and editing to create these great videos! Looking forward to following you on the rest of your cabin renos in the spring. The roof of your shed needs more wood under the plastic trap so the snow weight does not collect and cave those large spans of non-supported plastic. But then you can babysit it while heavy snow falls, then you and your broom can get to know each other better ! Good Luck be safe !

I’ve enjoyed all of your videos especially this one because looking for a place of my own has been on my mind a great deal this past year. While an individual’s experiences may be similarly shared I’ve learned that each project comes with it’s own unique problems giving it value as a learning aid for others. It is the mark of a wise person when they know when to seek help in order to do things well instead of struggling alone and having a less than adequate outcome. I feel like I've said this before, I LOVE your videos, but here again you've outdone yourself. This was a great video. I am not planning on building or renovating anything, but I found all this fascinating and I love to learn new stuff anyway. Felling the tree was crazy! I've never been concerned when doing this in the past but the height of that tree, the proximity to the cabin, and then the unexpected hang up in the other tree had ME nervous I can only imagine how YOU felt. 😯. I also thought a couple of your ideas, including the grappling hook, were genius. Thanks SO much for your videos!

Congratulation on completing 2 major renovo projects, the roof & the foundation. I was enthralled by the skill/precision of the equipment operator you hired to get those screw pilings in place. When you have an Open House/Housewarming I do hope you will invite the friendly neighbor who helped you fell the tree & the equipment operator who helped you with the pilings for the building's foundation will be shown & verbally acknowledged in an upcoming video. How you went about selecting the equipment operator should be an interesting story in & of itself. I'm sure the friendly neighbor who helped fell the tree had some interesting stories to tell about the prior owner.

What will people freak out about now that the roof is on? Ha! You did a great job. It is really shaping up to be a charming little place. I just love watching skilled excavator work. They make such delicate maneuvers with that heavy bucket. That tall tree was a real bugger, though. Impressive job. Have a good trip. Neil B. Neighbors recently covered their cabin roof with the same blue tarp material that you used to protect your used wood lumber. Within a month or so the wind shredded the blue tarp. For a temporary inexpensive solution, I suggested that they contact a billboard company and pickup a used vinyl billboard material that is normally given away or can be purchased at a minimal cost. You might give it a try.

I hope you saw my comments on your video about what to do for a way to get down the hill to the water. I think a zig zag walkeay would be perfect. It would be one of the easier projects, and you already have lots of the timber.

Excellent video, Slim! I gathered a couple things from this video.. 1) Slim is a very strong, physically healthy, ingenious man. 2) Don't mess w/ Slim 💪He can hold his own and then some! 3) That was one helluva experienced and precise Heavy Equipment Operator! 4) Slim is most definitely living his best life and doing things that make him happy! Great work Slim. You made the right choice going with the metal roof - it'll be far cleaner and it looks great too. I like that you put the extra support at the front. I had a large covered deck across the back of my home years ago and it only had 3 supports (all rotting). Like you, I added two extra within the span when I replaced them. For a man who is working mostly solo, you've accomplished a lot in the last 12 weeks. This little cottage has come a long way since your initial video. You've addressed the critical issues with the roof and the foundation (primarily) and the wrap to keep out the worst of the weather. Looking forward to your progress in the spring.
