You might want to look at EZ-LOK metal cores. I chose them to do a blind hole in a cast iron engine block because no special tools are needed. The outside thread is a common size so an ordinary tap and drill is all that is required plus a large flat blade screw driver to insert the core. The cores are about $2-3 each depending on size and you can buy them individually. Because I am doing a blind hole I also bought a bottom tap ( that’s a tap that threads almost to the bottom of a blind hole) as the hole is rather shallow. A helicoil presents a problem because it is almost impossible to break the tang at the bottom of a shallow hole. My rule of thumb; through hole = helicoil, blond hole = EZ-LOK. Hope that helps.

Just finding this video, and thank you for this! Previous owner of my Polaris Ranger cross threaded and stripped out the trans drain plug. Trying to find a time sert has been difficult, but at least I know Im going in the right direction!

I ran a main propulsion plant on a U.S. Navy frigate back in the day. My boss, the Chief Engineer, had both little toes curl up and inward over the tops of his feet and also had both of his nipples pierced with little tiny barbells. He had a habit of calling us engineering officers into his stateroom for a conference before the start of the day. When he didn’t have socks or a shirt on we’d all start singing “Under the Big Top” circus music at him. Good times.

@charliekohn4271

Threadsert marks thin wall versions that are barely bigger than helicoils. I've scene a lot of stripped 50 and 65 plug holes. I'm tempted to threadsert them for the ham fisted dads when I get them as a courtesy.

Really helpful video. For sump plug application, do you grind down the TimeSert so that it doesn't protrude too much into the sump? Not from the perspective of the sert coming into contact with any moving parts, but to allow oil to drain fully on future oil changes. Thank you.

About 2 years ago I had a local mechanic repair some spark plug threads on my vintage bike and he used a helicoil. I'm not sure why he didn't use a time sert. He's a very capable mechanic who's been doing this for a long time. If I had known he was going to use a helicoil I would have suggested the time-sert and even bought the kit myself if needed. Honestly, I'm a little annoyed by the whole thing, wondering if I can remove the helicoil and put a time-sert in it's place. Next time I'll do it myself.

I have a stripped oil check bolt on my 22’ 300. I plan to fix with a helicoil. How do you prevent metal shavings from going into the motor when installing a helicoil?

Like Sean Said, put grease on the tap. Or, take the cover off, do it on the bench and replace. I just did a video of me doing exactly that.

If you put some loctite on the helicoil they don’t budge or I’ve never had one come back out
@highlandcycles

I have done that but you have to be very careful not to put too much on. I have seen it secure the bolt to the helicoil

@@highlandcycles so contact time sert directly? I got an 86 XR80 that the previous owners grandkids bashed on. The 10mm ngk cr7hsa just falls in the hole. Looks like the hole is almost 14mm. A used head is the same price as a time sert kit it looks like.

Yeah great vid. I own a 2007 pig. Two right side valve cover bolts stripped. Dealer says timeserts are better. Nope. Right to repair is righteous. The penis shaped bolt hole would be last resort I’d do for bike had 100,000 miles on it and was selling. Heli coils are the shit for 6mmx1.00 cheap ass pig casings.i hate spell check. I hate computers. Get out and ride free. Selling my pig. NEXT BIKE IS A DONKEY!
