Fine review but What a complete missed opportunity from Timex. Here is a watch that contains graphics of space invaders...nothing more. Its pretty obvious what would would make this watch something fun.
I had the actual game of space invaders just on a wristwatch like that. It had 2 game modes and a tune which was named La Cucaracha ( the coak roach) , and i ordered it in the 80’s from a catalog, a huge physical book, in Germany. The catalog was either Otto,Schwab or Quelle. And I have no idea why they put a Mexican tune there maybe because the aliens looked like bugs. Anyhow, the buttons of the watch had their deal of getting worn out because I played that thing many times.
Yeah, exactly what I was thinking! I've been wearing these Timex T80 watches for years and I'd buy this one if it had the game on it. But alas I'll pass on it.
Having the game on this or any watch would be stupid. You'd play it for 2 minutes as a novelty, then only load it to show other people. It wouldn't work well with watch buttons. It would be cute, but ultimately offer very little value. Only question is whether it would spur enough impulse sales to justify the extra work and complication of customizing the watch core (or justify a significantly higher price tag), then stocking a unique variant of the T80 internals for as long as they sell the piece, as well as any extra licensing fees. Timex thought not, and they were probably right.
In the 80s I had a playable Frogger watch that was very playable and had all the sounds. Similar size to a calculator watch. In this day and age of technology it wouldn't stand up to an smart watch capability but it was fun.
Too me, it just seems hokey. It really hs nothing to do w/ Space Invaders except the sounds. Kinda dumb. But, the size is good. I don't get the people wanting giant watches thing... As the guy says in this video, it sort of disappears on the wrist. Yeah....whats wrong w/ that? It not always about status/showing off for others.
It's a fun little tribute piece. Probably going to pick up a gold one for my oddities collection, as I don't have a fully gold watch or a retro digital. Agree with you on size - the industry seems to be moving away from oversize watches that look ridiculous, a la Diesel and Invicta, and moving to smaller sizes again, as with the Tissot PRX and others. Still, watches don't always have to be so serious, and a goofy piece like this demonstrates that. It is kind of dumb, but so are watches, since they're obsolete technology at this point and purely luxury/fashion statements.
I ordered one of these, showed up with a dead battery and a loose button. After peeling off the THREE "made in china" sickers off the back, I opened the back to replace the battery and the whole movement ejected itself out of the case, broke one of the button contacts off, and the loose button shot out. Got it all back together as best as possible and I couldn't even get the back case back on with a case back press, Biggest waste of money. I owned it for a total five minutes then sent it back. This was the second Timex I've sent back within ten minutes this year, I'm over the brand.
Yes definitely overpriced, but who buys at retail? Got it from mrporter for £28.90. Having the game on it is pointless, though perhaps a little Easter egg to show people, so I don’t mind that it doesn’t like some of the comments.
