What causes high speed rattle noise on front of engine. Main timing chain tensioner failure. In order to properly repair engine must come out. And a $200.00 tool kit is required. ($360 for the master Ford cam tool kit) $400.00 timing chain kit as well. If u have a 4wd, chances are real good that you will have a balance shaft and chain. If so the block girdle and oil pan should be removed. I highly recommend a complete engine gasket kit. There are "tricks" on the Internet to cheat. But as complicated as the chain system is. I suggest you dont cheat. Also the jackshaft bolts are torque-to-yield bolts (one time use) both bolts are not included in the timing chain kit. Been able to get bolts from Ford as well as Amazon. Another tip, scribe a timing mark on each cam shaft with matching mark on the first cam cap before removing old chains. This will help reassure you that they are lined up right on TDC of #1 cylinder after reassembly. Right hand cylinder cam shaft bolt is reverse thread. Torx tool kit will be your friend. T30 T55 (I think)... and inverted E12 will be needed. If doing these chains might be out of your league , or getting the special tool kit is not an option.. these motors are available rebuilt in the $3,500 - $4,500 range. Some are offering 3yr unlimited miliage warrenty.

Hi, thank you for this video! One question - at 1:45 you mention that it's technically possible to attempt a half-assed replacement without pulling the engine... How long would it take a layman to get to the point where that could be attempted? (I've got a 2001 Ford ranger 4.0L that's about to go to the junkyard for the timing chain issue... I don't have much to lose)
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 4 года назад
It's for the timing balance shaft gear... some ppl say you can just lose the oil pan to get to that balance shaft chain tensioner. Other than that I personally would recommend this job without pulling the engine. You have to get the rear "cassette" off the jack shaft. Which requires removing a plug that us behind the flywheel. Anyone who said they have done this job without removing that plug didn't do it right Also its nearly impossible to do this without the proper alignment tools.

from ford new the original left ( passenger side ) tensioner only has about a quarter of an inch of wiggle room ( travel )to the new cassette cartridge??? / I would suggest replacing the driver side tensioner with a new OEM from ford and then use the old one from the driver side to install on the passenger side as it has .200 more throw. and yes it does make a difference.

Did you hear this rattle at idle or while going down the road? I`m hearing a rattle that sounds like its coming from the transmission area. Sounds similar to spark knock.... kinda. Do you have a video of what that rattle sounds like? I've got an '04 4.0 SOHC 4x4 that's got some noisy lifters but I've also got some rattle when I hit the gas that I'm just not sure of. Thanks!
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 6 лет назад
John-Dominic Heim what you dont realize there are no "lifters" on that engine. So if you are hearing lifter noise... there is something else. The noise that is created by this timing chain issue can be best described as a small size metal link chain rubbing on a piece of metal at a very fast pace. Its loud, and coming from the front of the engine. I did run into a ford explorer that had an engine knock. That i couldnt solve. Thought the knock was the rod bearnings... so i pull the motor.. and put all new bearnings(rods and mains) then new timing chain sets..and knock was still there.never did find the source of the knock. Customer elected to junk the vehicle afterward.

Im sorry my mistake. Yes there are lifters. they sit under the rocker arms below the overhead cams. ( I had to look up the service manual to remind myself) your noise is hard to hear from your video. But I can faintly hear a ticking nose. Here is what Id do....First use a mechanic's stethoscope and listen to various area to determine the location better. If you feel the noise is coming from under the valve cover then remove the valve cover on the suspect side, and run the engine. yes it will get messy. Then use a stethoscope to listen to each lifter. The noise in your video is too faint for me to tell what exactly it can be. But I can tell you it's NOT timing chain.

@WᴏʀʟᴅsSᴍᴀʟʟᴇsᴛVɪᴏʟɪɴ i had the rattle. It was loud on start-ups but calmed down when the engine was getting warm (though the rattle was still there). I thought that i give it a shot and change the tensioners. Ever since then the rattle is loud all the time. Do you know what i did? I guess that there was still something left from the chain guides but the new stronger tensioner was putting too much tension on the chain so it failed? And too, how long can i approximately drive with that loud rattle?
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 4 года назад
I cant tell you what the noise is, or how long you can drive it. If all you did was change the tensioners then you just scratched the surface of ford 4.0 SOHC timing chain job. What about the chains and cassettes? They are mostly plastic and become very brittle and then break. Also the noise might be coming from the rear chain.(at back of the engine)
@JK-cq5nc
@JK-cq5nc 4 года назад
@@Steve4x4 Yes the noise is coming from the rear chain. I think the chain is running directly on the chain tensioner. It's not possible to just replace the tensioner without removing the motor? Or you prefer to replace the chain at the same time since it's open?
@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 6 лет назад
Paul Baird it depends which chain you want to change. Ideally you want to change all 3 or 4 chains. (If u have a balance shaft) In that case your life will be much better off if you remove the motor. Remember there 3 chains up front, (Balance shaft chain, crankshaft to jackshaft chain, and jackshaft to left camshaft chain.) And one in the rear (jackshaft, to right camshaft chain)
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 6 лет назад
No, you have to remove the engine to get all 4 done, since the right side cam gear is on the back of the engine, and you can't get that chain cassette out and replaced without taking off the transmission and pulling out the engine seal, which covered by the transmission bell housing when everything is mated together.

@@SurelyYewJest my Ford expoler is making a loud tapping noise and I took it to the shop and he said it was one of the timing chains, he said you could drive one for years making that noise and that instead of replacing them you might as well replace the motor, is this true?
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 5 лет назад
I'm not a mechanic myself, but I've heard this job regularly quoted as being at least $4,000 to do. And that number seems to make sense, since you have to remove all belt-driven accessories, take the heads and valve train apart (and it wouldn't make sense NOT to clean everything while it's off), and then rebuild it all with new parts and gaskets. The only thing the mechanic isn't doing is taking out the crankshaft and pistons; other than that, it's in effect basically a full engine rebuild. That's part of the hidden cost of Ford reworking an OHV engine to be OHC. GM and Chrysler have made similar compromises in the name of saving engineering time and money, so Ford isn't alone, here. But it sucks nonetheless because even the aftermarket hasn't found a fix for this.
@only1sweetmaddy

@@SurelyYewJest thank you for replying to me, I guess we will just drive it making that noise until it dies then I'll just get another rebuilt engine in it, the vehicle means a lot to me since it was my late husband's, he passed away 2 years ago and I just feel close to him when I drive it.

@Steve4x4
@Steve4x4 Год назад
If you have the O.H.C. Engine, you can only get to the balance shaft chain(on 4wd models), the primary chain, and the driver's side chain cassette with engine still Installed. The passenger chain cassette is nearly impossible to remove/install with engine in vehicle. You can remove the transmission and might beable to do it that way. You need access to the rear jack shaft. (Which is in the location where the old camshaft would be on a O.H.V engine. As to just doing the tensioner. I don't recommend that at all. How could the tensioner fail without damaging the guides. Especially since the guide are the weakest part. To get a better understanding I highly recommend looking the Coyles timing chain remove/install video. It's very detailed.

There is no way of doing the whole job without it pulling the engine. Also note. It really help to get the SOHC Timing chain tool kit by OTC. @W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN
@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN 4 года назад
I dont think it was the engineers fault. Ford was too cheap to develop an all new V6 so what they did was took the 4.0 OHV engine block (which dates back to the early 80s as the 2.8, then 2.9, then 4.0) and put overhead cams on it. That's why there is a chain in the rear, because the block was made exclusively for an OHV design.

It comes down to the individual owner. Their attachment to the car, the condition of the vehicle, and the ability to deal with getting a new/use car. Here they felt is was the right choice.

@@Steve4x4 I'm a die hard ford guy, but ford is at fault. They had knowledge before these motors were even put into production that the timing chain tensioners were defective. Back in the late 90s explorers were coming into ford dealerships with the death rattle as early as 15k to 35k miles. They knew about it and could've issued a recall early on. Shocked that NHTSA didnt get involved. It's called planned obsolescence, they planned on these motors failing. Theres still alot of them on the road but a large majority is gone due to the poor quality valve body separator gasket blowouts on the 5r55e trans and the timing chain issues.

@@Steve4x4 Yeah Steve....you nothing better to do then to take apart an engine and lie about it's poor timing chain tensioners, even though the entire internet is filled with examples supporting your claim about said engine. 🙄
