It is good to see Toyota has moved beyond the expense and customer inconvenience associated with periodic timing belt changes. Buyer beware, some other automakers are still stuck in the past with inferior designs that will add a lot to the maintenance bill over the life of the car.

While an inconvenience and added expense for someone who is not mechanically inclined, for those who are, timing belts make engines much more reliable. But Toyota timing chain engines are solid

Stuck in the past? Timing chains were used long before belts. They're the past. Cars are being made now with belts that last 10 years, 125,000 miles. And for all that life there is near zero stretch. Chains elongate through their lifespans as the link pins wear. Changing a timing belt takes a few hours. Chains are a much bigger, more expensive job.

Define "life time of vehicle". Play on words viewers, chains do need to be replace regardless on manufactures recommended service of car/truck. Chains stretch over time and make noise when worn, belts just snap with out warning.
@gertscheper4038
@gertscheper4038 3 года назад
Chains do not stretch , they wear. If the manufacturer uses a good chain and you service the car ( oil) every 7 to 10000 miles with the correct oil and filter you wont need to change the timing chain.

How does old oil affect the longevity of timing chain ? The hydraulic tensioner go bad without new oil ?
@aarongibbins3119
@aarongibbins3119 2 года назад
@@jessicaoswell7361 the "tentioner" is usually a spring loaded plunger pushing against a curved (slightly)arm that the t. chain slides across.oil is pumped through the tentioner from where it is fastened to the engine out a small hole in the end of the plunger "hydraulic"not changing the oil could block that oil port .or reduce the amount and that is where some if not all of the timing chain assembly gets its lubrication

@@FredAndersonToyota Thank you for getting back to me. I looked under the hood of my 2011 Sienna. I just noticed the engine type 2grfe v6. That engine has a timing chain. As long as I keep up with the oil changes the chain should last a long time. I was not sure if the 2011 Sienna had a belt or chain. I was thinking if it had a timing belt it would require a possible replacement and that would require opening up the engine. I think my findings are correct. If not please let me know. Thank you again for your helpful content. Winter tips for a reliable vehicle. Thank you.

the A/C service port cap was missing on this car just to let you know like the Toyota tech said it true the timing chain system should last the life of the engine if the maintenance is done right but this does not apply to all manufactures I work on Europeans cars and I can safely say that not all engine with a chain will last the life of the engine and this applies to North American brands too and most timing chains jobs are very expensive especially if the chain system is bettwen the engine and transmisson witch is not that uncommon. I personally like belts they are more quiet and if you follow the manufacture intervals it going to be ok.

I have a car that has only traveled 40,000 miles and will be 10 years old next year. According to the manual, the timing chain must be replaced after 10 years! I am now trying to figure out WHY, as it feels very unnecessary to change the chain on a car that has been driven so little 🤔 My car is a Chevrolet Spark 1 liter engine. I know this video is about Toyota cars but I can't find any information online. Hope someone reads this and give me some guidance 😄 and hopefully can explain WHY the timing chain already needs to be replaced.

Timing chains usually become noisy on cold starts...rattling noise for about 3 seconds...if the engine is completely silent, the chain should be OK .the silent type chains become very noisy on cold starts, and should be replaced immediately...ie BMW, VW tsi, and Merc 271 compressor &CGI engines....yeh they call them silent...what a joke.

OHC timing chain components all need to be inspected for wear. Plastic chain guides get brittle with heat and age, these break and fall into oil pan. It's a time bomb when this may happen, so get it done to protect from surprises. on a road trip.

I had it repaired and now it isn’t steering correctly. They tell me that it needs new new control,arms. I literally can’t drive it now! Can these issues be connected?
