Just replaced a diesel Ford Mondeo belt, water pump, idler and tensioner. 200,000 km, which is the scheduled replacement interval. The belt looked a little old, the water pump, idler and tension pulleys look and feel like new. Pretty straightforward job, took a few hours. An interesting feature of this engine is that while it's an interference engine, the valves are actually not inclined and are actuated by rockers. If a belt breaks, the pistons will hit valves, but because they're straight they don't bend, and all that happens is some broken rockers, which can be replaced without removing the cylinder head.

My 1986 Porsche 928 original timing belt was replaced after 10 years @ 100k miles due to a waterpump leak. The 2nd timing belt is 14 years old, however I live in San Diego with average temp of 75 all year. New belt technology last longer than those from the 80s and the majority of belt failures are due to other components or extreme climates.

I had just replaced my timing belt at 201,000 miles and the belt still looks pretty good.I wasn't gonna change it but the seal behind the balancer shaft came off and leaked oil pretty bad.Iam the original owner 2000 accord. I believe that timing belt replacement is one of the dealership scam,You can go up to 300,000 miles and more without spending $1000.00 that the dealers charge.Save money just do it yourself if you can.Also the water pump and tensioner is still in good condition.Honda water pump and tensioner don't usually go bad on a Honda.I have 6 Honda accords Me my wife and kids drive ONE ACCORD.Very low maintenance car.Just change the fluids oil specially.

i have a 2012 sonic, with 96k on it, i looked at the belt, it looks good to me, can still read everything on in, also all the motor mount bolts that have to be removed on my car to do the job have marks on them, like washers have socket marks and bolts have marks on edges, also intake boot clamp which is usually removed just to get it out of the way was lose, all these things lead me to believe it was changed, when i dont know, but if i was to guess i would say 60k because on the cars this replaced thats when it was to be done while the sonic is to be done at 97500.

@lomgshorts3
@lomgshorts3 7 лет назад
Timing belts may have been more convenient and cheaper for the manufacturer, but it is an expensive pain for the owner. Rubber timing belts should never have been used in any engine when timing chains technology has been used for many decades. Most timing chains usually outlast the engine's useful life. "Planned obsolescence" is the curse of consumers worldwide.
@johnny0454
@johnny0454 6 лет назад
longshorts3, timing belts are a more advanced technology for a few reasons. Firstly they are smoother and provide more accurate valve timing because timing chains, especially long ones found on twin dual overhead cam engines, have some slop to them, where belts do not, even when they are 6-8 feet long or more, like what is commonly found on dual overhead camshaft designs on V-8 engines (which have four camshafts, two over each cylinder bank.) Another reason is noise, harshness, and vibration. Timing chains on dual overhead cam engines are especially noisy due to the length of them, they are fine on older, single camshaft engines where they are substantially shorter and only have to make two bends, unlike modern engines with idler and tensioner pulleys, in addition to the extra camshafts they have to go around. Moreover, the vibration created by an exceptionally long chain will ring through an engine block, even if your ears can't hear the super high frequency, this can disrupt all kinds of sensors, causing them to send false data to the engine management compuer, most notably the pre-ignition detecting knock sensors as they are very sensitive to any vibration in a specific frequency range, if that happens then ignition timing advance will be reduced, hurting economy and performance probably without any detection by the driver that the computer is doing this. Then there is the cost for the consumer, there is initial purchase cost of the vehicle to consider, and we all know the the manufacturer isnt going to simply absorb the cost of the raw material (being steel in the case of a timing chain vs rubber and nylon cord for a belt) or the substantially higher manufacturing costs for a chain. They are going to pass that along to you, the consumer, by charging more for the vehicle to begin with. And lastly, there is the weight and rotating mass to think about. Every pound shaved off of a vehichle is important for economy as well as performance, especially over the long lifespan of a vehichle. Besides, the rotating mass of a big, fat, long, steel chain is going to cost horsepower, which will hurt fuel economy and performance. Even simple things like going to an electric fan vs an engine driven fan (which can cost as much as 15-20 horsepower to run) can make a huge difference, especially over the long run. So before you go assuming that highly trained automotive designers and engineers are stupid (I assure you that they are not, and they have to consider so many factors that you are unaware of) and go running your mouth before actually thinking about what you are saying, you should think again and devote just a little more brain power to the concepts you derive, aparantly from no real experince or knowledge, before then sharing your misinformed and misleading simple minded opinions with others, you should check yourself. Just my two cents on the subject. And I am neither a designer nor an engineer. I'm just a simple 34 year old backyard mechanic with common sense, Im guessing yours went out the window a long time ago.

you need to soak your timing belt in "303 aerospace protectant". It will last a lot longer because it makes the rubber more flexible and softer. V-Belts/Serpentine/Alternator/Timing Belts will break because they come really dry and almost brittle right from the factory. After so time, they will get cracks which leads to a teared belt. I didn't believe that shit at first but I tryed multiple time with different belts on my lawntractor and it works. search here on YT for "STOP Replacing TIMING BELTS....PERIOD!" from Sweet Project Cars

I tried to do that on my 2000 accord .On 2004 I replaced the timing belt and water pump,all drive belts.The timing belt are still brand new at 100,000 miles.So I tried to drive the car until February 2019 major oil leak in front of the engine Found out one seal popped out the seal behind the balancer belt.The mileage is 301,000 Miles.So If you will wait for the belt it is not going to happen.The condition of the belt is still brand new.So if you can drive your car up to 500,000 miles I can bet you the timing belt will not break, but another parts will fail like seals, pump,or tensioners etc.On Japanese cars, But I don't know about Koreans maybe not.I've seen some that failed at 80,000 miles.Honda all the way.

is there ANY way to know is it right to do "BIG service" on 1.6 tdci / HDI engines ? Can we somehow notice that there is time to change timing belt, tensioner, water pump...? Are there any specific sound or engine behavior to recognize ? I own (used) Focus (mk2.5) 1.6tdci '09 for almost 3 months and even I got warranty for more 10K km for engine and gearbox but I'm still a little bit suspicious (although the vehicle looks very well preserved for 9yr old) about that question... In papers from service there is a trace that "Big service" was performed in France at 165K km with cost like 700 euro and car now have 186K km on odometer, but bcs I'm from Serbia there is never 100% warranty that the mileage wasn't decreased when vehicle was imported from France (for better selling price with less Km). Timing belts.....what to do...timing belts and water pump...what to do..... I've changed timing belts myself, on older cars; for an engineer it's not difficult....but modern cars? The reason you might consider changing a perfectly good water pump as well is....whilst the covers are off, you might as well. Basically, you bite the bullet and change both, round about £620....it's insurance against a croaked engine!

Me too.These rubber bullshits are design to shorter the life of the car.They said that rubber belts make less noice but I prefer that and have reliable car than not knowing when everything will fail.No thanks. The best engines are with teeth wheels I dont know the proper word to explane in english but you will understand...BOMB PROOF

We should just pay extra for a timing chain... It will cost less in the long run.

"How Long Do Timing Belts Last?" Simple answer, they don't. A timing chain will last for the life of the engine, and beyond. Timing belts were installed in engines by car makers only to create additional aftermarket business for car dealers and repair shops. The argument that belts are quieter is bogus.

@@erickimmy1493 They can, but only under extreme duress. You can buy a belt timed car, leave it untouched with zero miles on it for 10 years and you will STILL need to change that belt out for aging! Not so with a chain however.

My Mitsubishi service manual state's 100,000 klms or 5yrs,water pump, tensioner pulley 200,000klms so why do the mechanic's keep saying change everything. I wonder why?,maybe it's because $500 first change $1200 plus second belt.

WHY DONT THEY JUST USE CAM TIMING CHAINS LIKE ON A BIKE ENGINE IT LASTS EXTREMELY LONG TIME
@georgeparker555

Agreed
@staver76

Despite them lasting longer I'd rather have a belt. Apparently chains are much harder to remove than a belt.
@fidelcatsro6948
@fidelcatsro6948 7 лет назад
the chain is placed in between the camshaft rods, its always stay soaked in oil, my bikes never needed chain replacement till they went to the scrapyard, a good heavy duty camchain lasts virtually till we throw the engine away..

I had a chain on my old 351W. The chain had so much slack in it the chain started wearing a hole in the chain cover. Chain or belt you still have to replace them.

My owners manual doesn’t have recommended maintenance anywhere in it. It appears to be a separate “option” my car has 113k in it and I want fucking answers. Only Honda. I’ve never heard of a car being so hard to get a straight answer on maintenance.

Yes. But if you price it into the cost if buying the used car, you can get used cars for a song (and do the maintenance and repairs)

those rubber timing belts suck, wonder who invented those stupid things, all the heat in the engine wears them out fast, had 1 break on me at 3 am in the boonies on a winter night, had to call a tow truck, 200 bucks just for that.

They start to fray on the edges , they get dry rot micro cracks, then the rubber teeth start to shear off n then your timing gets thrown off n boom piston hits the valve n your Volvo is no more a go!😢
