In this video we look at the importance of timing in pool and how a perfectly timed cue action can greatly increase the action on the cue ball. We look "What is timing?" and how it's about accelerating through the ball. We use the screw back shot as an example and study how timing increases the back spin on the cue ball.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table but most of the same principles apply to both american pool and snooker.

This is by far the best explanation of Timing I've seen. Thanks so much.

Couldn't agree more. The use of the graphics combined with the steady and deliberate explanation makes this a must see for those struggling with their cue action. As usual, great stuff!

Velocity is the first derivative of position with respect to time. The wider the spacing between the lines, the higher the velocity. Acceleration is the second derivative of position with respect to time.. equivalent to the first derivative of the velocity with respect to time. The point of highest acceleration is therefore the point at which the separation between lines changes the most. This is likely to be halfway between stationary and peak velocity. Don't forget that as you're striking the ball near peak acceleration this will retard the cue which is why you're striking the ball near peak velocity. I would suggest that if you did the same test without the cueball, peak velocity resides much after the point of hypothetical impact. Great video, thank you.

This really helped me understand the concept and the physics of why it matters. Perhaps it can be summarized as this: You want to be accelerating through the queue ball, by doing this you increase the contact time between the tip and the queue ball, imparting more spin. If you are not accelerating the queue at the point of contact, the contact is momentary and little spin is imparted. I suppose in some sense good timing is a little bit like a push shot.

This video literally changed my game. I could never put a finger on what is wrong with my stroke and I wasted years trying different grips, stances, cues, tips etc. It's still not natural for me and under pressure I still play stiff but at least I know what I need to do.

Excellent explanation. I think the great thing about pool is that the since the playing area is so much less than snooker you don’t have to put in a lot of force into a screw shot to move the cue ball a relatively long distance. The smaller cue ball with the smaller mass has a natural tendency to move backwards on a screw shot just as it resists initially to move forward on a top-spin shot. One thing I have found that affected my screw shot regardless of timing was the thickness of my cue tip. Having changed to a new elk master tip (really thick) I struggled to generate the usual effortless backspin. Now that it is worn down again almost to the ferrule, my backspin mo jo has returned but also the risk of miscue! Is there a tip that you recommend? And how do you avoid that new-tip deadness? I end up filling my new tip down by 70 per cent which seems a waste!!

Cheers. I haven't really notice it that much when changing tip but it's probably more to do with the compression of the tip rather than the thickness of it. You can buy little tip compressors that you leave the tip in before placing on the cue, just compresses it down so it takes less wearing in. I've not used one myself though. I use Elmaster Pro tips and the seem to be pretty good straight away. They are particularly good at holding the chalk well (which is good for someone like me who always forgets to chalk!). amzn.to/2YH0Kgw

Absolutely right - more about compression of the tip. I bought my tips cheap and I suspect they may be fakes. Will try the official ones but will also try compressing the tips I have. Cheers!

Hey, I wanted to ask, what camera did you use for your slow motion recording/playback? I want to test the same thing for my stroke, because I've got the same problem, and I'd like to get a better understanding for where my maximum point of acceleration is, and how I can change it.
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 года назад
I used my GoPro for this video but I’ve also just used the slow motion on my iPhone before and it’s pretty good for being able to diagnose problems in your cueing. Just try and get whatever camera you use in a static position (so not hand held), so there is no other movement.

You should look into coaching!?
@siyabongathembinkosimngome8869
What about the weight of the cue, I I assume that counts a lot
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool Год назад
Not really, timing is all about your arm and accelerating it smoothly. The cue is just the extension of your arm.
@nickpeng560
@nickpeng560 10 месяцев назад
Great explanation but your demonstration is not so good, you hit different position of the cue ball so the second shot you get the cue ball back more distance.
