I've had timor babies once and kept them till adulthood.. they are very jumpy although they will take food from your hands..Their character is just below green monitors in agileness
My friend: My dream pet is a German shepherd! What’s yours? Me: Uhhh well ya see... my dream pet is a monitor. My Friend: A computer monitor? Me: You know Komodo Dragons? My friend: Yeah Why? Me: Think that but a bit smaller. My friend: like leopard gecko smaller? Me: no like the size of a small dog smaller.
Such a spectacular lizard Clint Here in Aus we obviously have just shy of 30 species, many of which are this size or smaller, yet for some reason all our dwarf monitors arnt as well known as our larger monitors!
@@ClintsReptiles Okay, love your videos! You are why I got a blue tongue skink. Also if you do snapping turtles try to use a baby as an example. Food for thought.
Should really do more of a head to head with a freckled monitor and an ackie since they're of similar nature and size but have different care requirements (ackie is more ground dwelling and semi-arid vs the semi-tropical arboreal freckly).
the fact that they had to re-do the whole video and Clint seems not only not bothered by this, but EXCITED to get to spend more time with reptiles, shows just how much he enjoys reptiles.
Oh the ackie is without a doubt THE best pet monitor. Reasonable size, even the skittish babies often will tame down, hardy, great personality, and gorgeous. The only real draw back is the need alot of substrate and some height, so their enclosure is bigger than a lizard their size would suggest. Timors are awesome monitors but I would say some of the other australian dwarf might be better, although if you get a friendly CBB timor, hard to think of a better pet monitor.
Awesome video!! I like that you don't show the score in the thumbnail Here are some suggestions to cover next African bullfrog American alligator Argus monitor Asian water monitor Axolotl Basilisk Banded gecko Bearded anole Blood python/ woma python Blue tailed skink Box turtle Budgett's frog Cat eyed gecko Chinese cave gecko Collared lizard Crested newt Crocodile gecko Cuban knight anole Dart frog Diamondback terrapin Dragon agama Dumeril's monitor Dune gecko Emerald tree boa False water cobra Fan fingered gecko Fat tailed gecko Fire belly toad Golden gecko Green tree frog Green tree python False water cobra Horned frog Indigo snake Leaf tailed gecko Legless lizard Mata mata Mourning gecko Pacman frog Pink tongue skink Quince monitor Rainbow boa Red eared slider Reticulated python Rosy boa Russian tortoise Shield tailed agama Tiger salamander Tiger whiptail Tristis monitor Veiled chameleon White lined gecko White throat monitor Yellow headed gecko
That is thanks to viewer suggestions. I think it is better this way. Who doesn't like a little mystery?? I love the list of suggestions! Looks like this channel is going to carry on for a long time!
Another rad video as usual Clint! Keep it up! Suggestion though, I don't like the lack of score on the thumbnail. I like to know what I'm getting into before the video. Plus it's easy to look back at the thumbnails for a quick glance reference on the rating on a particular reptile. Thanks!
He looked like a fairly cooperative individual considering his species' reputation... most of the time, anyway. On the topic of small lizards from lizard families known for being big, do you have any plans to do the desert iguana?
Clint, have you ever considered doing a video on rough neck monitors? You mentioned them in passing in your best monitor list and I'm curious what your more in-depth thoughts on them are.
Hey Clint, I was wondering what would be the best option to provide heat for large snakes? Heat pads work for smaller snakes but I am about to purchase an 8ft Red Tail Boa and I know there are not heat pads that large. Is it okay to use heat lamps? Because that would make it much easier.
Prehensile tails make me happy too (now if only there was a small monitor with the body of a dumirs monitor and the personality of an ackie monitor. For now, I'll stick with getting an ackie)
I like your videos. You are a true animal lover. I disagree with your low rating of monitors. They suck as a first pet to someone who doesn't do research since they have alot of needs. But if you do your homework, prepare a nice big enclosure, stick to a healthy monitor diet, practice proper socialization, I give monitors a 5 out of 5. Monitors are a life style. Good monitor owners don't have a social life since all of their time and money goes into keeping their monitor happy and healthy.
I love all monitor lizards cos of their resemblance to the mosasaurs. I find myself fascinated with that sort of thing. Somewhat a remnant of what once was. (Slightly controversial but the resemblance in the skull and head as well as the body shape is undeniable.)
I have a nile monitor currently about 6 months old. Would you say these are more timid than nile monitors? Mine seems to be pretty ok with being handled but I’m wondering if I’ll be able to make one of these not afraid of me or timid
always wish he gave approximate dimensions on the enclosure, not just vague comments like relatively large or rather reasonable. that's the only bit of info that seems lacking. other than that great videos, great guy!
This could be a good option to take care of the surplus of dubias that have gotten too big for my geckos. Also a good size until I can free up a room for one of those NERD water monitors.
Hi Clint, long time viewer, first time commenter. I had a Timor monitor for 8 years. Paid $65 for a sub adult of "unknown origins" (read: definitely imported). I just wanted to mention that with regular work, mine became a sweetheart to handle. I would walk around the house with her perched on my shoulder, she was about as calm as a leopard gecko. Also wanted to say she loved the occasional minnow I would drop in her water bowl. Really awesome lizard that I'll never have again because now I have a tegu. 😊
so let me get this straight.. other lizards don’t breath when they run? so when my beardie tries to make a run for it he’s holding his breath? and if that’s the case then why isn’t it easier to catch down some lizards
I came home from work today, and my Timor had laid an egg without breeding. The only other thing kept in the cage is a very small tortoise. It was weird for an egg. Super squishy, but no doubt that's what it was.
Definitely like the change to the thumbnail, encourages everyone to watch the video! Following the theme of dwarf monitors, any chance of a video with Kings Rock monitor?
Hi Clint, I have a personal fascination with the smaller monitors, known as Odatria. Varanus timorensis is classified as one of these genus & is known from the islands around Timor. A very similar species is the Peacock monitor, Varanus auffenbergi which I believe is only found on one particular island (Roti) near Timor [Mark Auliya and André Koch Visual Identification Guide to the Monitor Lizard Species of the World (Genus Varanus)]. As such there are subtle differences which separate these species & I for one have a personal preference for the latter. Why, is a reasonable question & simply it is because of the blue in their pattern. I feel this is an exquisite feature & sets them apart from an average V timorensis, plus it affords them their common name of Peacock. Did your video release prior to the distinction of these as separate species or do you take the view that they are colour forms of the same species? You mention the colour in your video, but make no mention of the different island localities, which is for my point, what's misleading when you continue to call your specimen a Timor monitor. Otherwise I enjoy your content & would myself love to maintain (possibly breed) a pair or trio of V auffenbergi in the future, because of their smaller stature thus making their care less problematic. I keep large constrictors & understand the difficulties maintaining large reptiles, so would never promote an average keeper towards anything larger than V jobiensis for example unless they have the facility & many years of experience to deal with the trials of such impressive creatures. None the less I appreciated this episode for the detailed videography of a V auffenbergi (imo) as one of my aspirational animals.
I honestly love the outtakes so much. I like the whole persona(?) and vibe of the main videos but the outtakes are just as fun as any outtakes can be. Glad to see ya'll are having fun with it while being informative.
I have a timor. No way, if you are considering a lizard that is social-able. They are dwarf monitors so the cost to feed them is low, like ackies and they do not cost as much as an ackie to get.
I have one of these. An absolute joy to own. Not a big fan of being picked up but is out and about all day. Very aggressive eater. Mine doesnt run away from you but tends to be weary.
could you make a video on tree monitors. I've been interested in them for sometime now because their, to me at least the perfect monitor ( big enough to be impressive, small enough to handle and easy enough to care for, more or less), though any similarly sized monitor would be interesting too. I've been researching them too but, in the UK at least, can't find any that are available still it's more of a dream for the future when I can actually afford them.
Hey I love your videos, but I have a question for the animals that need UV light can it be replaced if the enclosure is under sunlight like near or under a window? With some shadow espaces within the enclosure.
Would you consider making a 'best pet video' on Brown House snakes? I think they're absolutely beautiful and underrated, I'd love to learn more about them! Also this little guy is adorable ❤️❤️
Awesome video as always Clint! Went to an expo this weekend and saw a bunch of Mangrove Monitors for sale. Do you have plans to do a video on them? They are a pretty cool looking lizard
Love Saturdays because we get to see what Amazing animal Clint has to show us! I know you just get absolutely inundated with suggestions so absolutely no pressure, but out of curiosity are beauty snakes, dart frogs, or tarantulas anywhere on your radar? I know only one of those are technically reptiles, but they’re all so much fun!
Could there be a Timor vs Ackie monitor video in the future? They seem to be so similar, yet have subtle differences that could decide which one is better. I'm honestly considering picking one of the two up as my first monitor. That's going to be years down the line, but it wouldn't hurt to plan it out now, lol.
I've been a reptile fan my whole life sand didn't know they couldn't run and breathe at the same time! That explains why monitors appear to have a two stage breathing system. Very cool!
@Clint's Reptiles. Or any helpful reader. I need help finding Timor Monitors for sale. I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find any availability.
I would really like to hear a comparison between this and the mangrove monitor. The mangrove monitor seems very interesting, it is both aquatic and arboreal and tropical, and it has salt water resistance. There could be some very interesting enclosures one could develop for the mangrove monitor.
Hi Clint! I'm here to tell you, that because of you, and many other people that do videos about reptiles, I went and bought almost all the things needed for the corn snake. I'm going to get the snake during next week, when I have everything set up. I absolutely can't wait for my personal noodle with the head.
Dang it, Jason! You had ONE job! 😂 Side question that has nothing to do with anything: can humidity that’s too high cause a respiratory infection in snakes?
Clint's Reptiles Looks like I’ll have to drill more holes in my snake’s tub today, then. Not sure how my humidity can be too high in the first place; I use aspen and only have a water dish for moisture.
Coel Acanth I don’t think it’s that, unfortunately. The warm end is usually high 80s and never above 90 when I check it, which is ideal for a ball python from what I hear. Honestly if drilling holes doesn’t work I’m very tempted to try a glass enclosure-outside of that or cutting a hole in the drawer and covering it with mesh I really don’t know any more options.
