The 1996 movie Tin Cup is based on a true story about Gary McCord, a professional golfer and commentator on the Champions Tour. In the 1986 FedEx St. Jude Classic, McCord dropped five balls in a row in the water on the par-5 16th hole, refusing to change clubs or go to the drop area. This moment inspired the memorable sports scene in the movie. For example, in the movie, Roy McAvoy's final-round score in the fictional U.S. Open is 78, after posting scores of 83-62-64-78. However, this scene actually happened to McCord in the 1986 tournament, when he hit five in the water and carded a 16 on the hole to cap a round of 87. Mcord was the announcer that took the bet for the bank shot off the crapper and was in the bar scene.
Just that one scene where Roy tries to make the green on the long shot is based on McCord, not the entire movie. The movie is inspired by stories of many golfers, professional and amateurs that have been told around clubhouses.
In a 1998 tournament, members of the gallery watching John Daly started shouting “Tin Cup” as he hit ball after ball in the water on his way to scoring 18 on a par-5 hole.
The Legend of Bagger Vance is an underrated golf movie I think you'll enjoy. Beautifully filmed and directed by Robert Redford, starring Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Will Smith, also about a man working through his demons.
Don’t forget Jack Lemmon in “The Legend of Bagger Vance”! He is the narrator and does a scene as grown up Hardy. And the ladies love old Jack from the “Grumpy Old Men” franchise!
Yea, that's good too. Far different, serious, and a different era, but very very good. It has one thing in common, a once great that no one really saw versus the best, relatable :P
@@hawkeyegeorge Now that's the Greatest Golf Movie Ever Made! Love that one because it's based on a true story and the golf effects were spot on. Also, the top two golf actors were great in it and the caddie take was the cherry on top.
Even though David is a huge tool, I love the part where he wins the bet by hitting the ball across the pavement. It's just so clever and yet so simple...it shows you that you have to always try to think outside the box to have the best shot in life, and also it's a great illustration of the phrase, "Work smarter, not harder" which is Tin Cup's biggest problem.
This was "borrowed" from a legendary story from the 1920's involving golfer Titanic Thompson and Arnold "The Brain" Rothstein of Chicago Black Sox infamy. Rothstein anticipated him perhaps hitting the ball off a cliff, so he stipulated a flat surface... Thompson gladly hit it across a frozen Lake Erie. This story was recounted in a book I had as a child in the 80's and I instantly recognized the homage, though I imagine this hustle has been reused by many through the years.
@clh35 I loved Michael Stuhlbarg's portrayal of Rothstein in Boardwalk Empire. I don't know enough about the man to call it accurate, but one of my favorite characters.
@@clh35I came here to say this. I read Thompson's biography as a kid. I remember the part where he got his dog to fetch stones from the bottom of a creek.
@@seedy80 Ah, I don't know that one. The book I had was by everyone's favorite 80's magician, con man, and night court judge, Harry Anderson. I picked up a few fun little hustles from it. So is the source of Thompson's nickname true?
I'm a golfer and Tin Cup is by far my favorite golf movie (yes, even more than Caddyshack). I think it's one of Costner's best performances and for the most part the golf is very realistic. I'm glad you guys liked it. A bit of trivia - Costner had never played golf before this movie, but became so good training for the movie that a lot of the shots they filmed getting close or making putts were his actual shots - they didn't need to use special effects.
Sports movie endings are tough because either the people you've fallen in love with win the final game/event/competition which makes it conventional and predictable, or they have to lose which is unsatisfying. This movie finds the perfect balance between the two
The ending of this movie is the most ridiculous unrealistic sports movie ending ever. Rookie of the Year's underhanded Eephus strikeout was more believable.
Ron Shelton's movies are always interesting because they're not so much "sports movies" as they are character studies set in the sports world. So they're more unpredictable and more about the people involved, what drives them and how they grow and develop, rather than winning and losing. So a character can win the game but still feel like they failed, or lose the game but feel like they succeeded. Blue Chips is another good Ron Shelton movie, I hope Cassie reacts to that one, too.
@@definetheterms1236 I'll give you the unlucky number 13 being essentially a hole in one is genius paradigm, but if you've ever played golf in your life you'd know that his idiot decision to keep playing from that spot is excruciating as hell to watch no matter what the ultimate payoff is gonna be. Speaking of payoff, imagine the modern dollars that dumbass would be losing with every ball in the drink and let that thought sink in. That's without even considering he sold his range and is in debt already.
The worst argument I ever got into with one of my bosses was over the end of this movie. She is a big golf fan and thought there was no way he would blow that last hole that way. I thought it was the perfect culmination of his character. He told Rene at the beginning that he'd never finished anything in his life. He wanted to change that. "It's about gaining control of your life and letting go at the same time." That's what he did. He finished with a perfectly controlled shot while letting go of winning.
This movie and the end scene has a simple message. Most the time as adults, we lay up. We play it safe. We sacrifice our dreams to work to try and make a steady living with little to moderate fulfillment. Roy "going for it" is the cliché of going for you dreams. Like say, starting a RU-vid channel, reacting to movies. Sounds crazy but if you guys weren't doing this, you'd be known and loved by your close friends, families and acquaintances. Instead, you have 383k fans who love to watch you react to movies they love. And I would say that is something special 🙂
Cassie you never cease to amaze me. I never would have guessed you’re into golf. I live about 15 minutes away from Augusta National where they play the Masters. I also run a golf club repair shop that’s part of a company that has 6 golf courses about an hour from Augusta, so we get a lot of guests during Master’s week every year. I’m very excited to watch this and thanks for always entertaining us!
Rene Russo was in Thor (his mother),in "Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 (Mel Gibson's woman), in Major League (Baseball) as Jake's wife, in "In the Line of Fire" as a secret agent working with Clint Eastwood
David Sims, Kevin Costner's nemesis is played by Don Johnson, the father of Dakota Johnson from Fifty Shades. P.S. Last month Lou Gossett Jr died. You should do Officer and a Gentleman. He won Academy Award back in 1982. Great movie
Thank you ladies for finally reacting to this movie. For Kevin Costner fans this is a must see. The two of you are going to love this movie. It really is great.
I'm not a Costner fan, but I did enjoy him in this light-hearted movie. So glad Cassie and Carly enjoyed the subversion of expectations at the end. As a duffer who's hit a lot of balls in the water over the years...AFTER laying up...I enjoyed it too.
let's watch the spy movie "No way out" with Kevin Costner (as Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell, U.S. Navy) , Sean Young (Blade Runner) and Gene Hackman
This is my favorite movie of all time. I literally learned how to play golf from this movie and then went and played for my school. I can't wait. FINALLY someone is reacting to it
Small detail I love is back when Roy was trying to qualify for the Tour originally and tried to hit the same impossible shot multiple times in a row he finally did it and scored a 13, and as Romeo said, a 12 would've gotten him on the Tour. During the final hole of the tournament, when he sinks that shot, its for a 12. Nice symbolism.
I always loved that it finally clicked for Russo's character on Roy's 12th stroke. That's who he is and it makes him happy and that's who she wants to be with. "Just go for it Roy. Knock it on".
So around the 23:00 mark when the big guy is caddying for him and you ask “what’s he listening to?” The guy singing the song in that country song is ACTUALLY the big guy who is caddying for Roy
My one weird reference is that I worked for a jewelry store for several years, and learned that there’s something called a “Tin Cup chain” named after Rene Russo’s pearl necklace in this movie.
You need to watch the remake of "THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" with Pierce Brosnan. It is almost as good as the original. And it has the same female actress in it as TIN CUP.
One of Kevin Costner’s more laid back characters…and Don Johnson playing another character he does well…it’s actually pretty entertaining…and at times, pretty funny…
Costner is the sports movie GOAT. Great golf swing, great baseball swing from both sides of the plate. I live next to the golf courses where they filmed the US Open sequences. There's a plaque on the water hole where he hits the shot from. It's a really tough shot.
It does seem like Costner really is one of those "natural athlete" type people. I remember reading about him surprising and impressing a bunch of minor league pros during the first batting practices for Bull Durham. Machine was pitching legit level heat and Costner was putting solid wood on the ball. Even hit a few dingers. You're right too, he's an actual quality switch hitter... which has always boggled my mind lol
Your question about why they call the biggest clubs (Driver, 2, 3, 4, & 5) "woods" is because those club heads were originally all made of wood. I played with my set of clubs with a Driver, 3 Wood, 4 Wood, and 5 Wood (and irons 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge), and Putter from the time I started playing in Middle School until I finished college (1967-1978). Now the Driver and the "woods" are pretty much all titanium alloy.
I can't wait to watch your reaction to this sports comedy. I've watched your reaction to "The Replacements" several times just to see the joy on your face and in your voice. I don't know if this will be as good but I really like this movie(lets me get into a golfer's head)
Rene Russo: Thor's mom, Lethal Weapon 3 & 4, Major League, In The Line of Fire, Ransom (which the girls LOVED) and The Thomas Crown Affair which I suspect they'd LOVE as well. And the guy playing Roy's nemesis is Don Johnson, best known for a WILDLY popular TV series in the 80's called 'Miami Vice'.
Yes to The Thomas Crown Affair! I'm sure Cassie and Carly will love that movie. For a more serious Kevin Costner movie, try Revenge with Madeline Stowe. For a really young Kevin Costner, watch No Way Out.
Yes woods used to be made of wood usually persimmon. I started golfing when I was a teen in the mid 90s you still saw some people using persimmon woods Bernhard Langer won the Masters in 93 with persimmon woods the last player to win a major with them. First few rounds I played was with a set of lefthanded persimmon woods I borrowed from my friends father.
Love the comment. I'm a golfer and still occasionally hit a couple of old persimmon woods I have at the driving range just for fun. It is where the term "hitting it on the screws" came from, since there are between 2 and 4 screws on the face, in the "sweet spot" on those old persimmon clubs. Once every couple of years, I will take my dad's old set of beryllium copper Ping Eye 2s to hit at the range, just for fun. I don't do it often because those clubs still look almost brand new.
Honestly knew you would adore this movie! Romance, friendship, sports!! Cheech Marin as Romeo is amazing.. I adore his character in this movie and he and Roy's friendship! (edit) I adore the whole friend group!
If you enjoyed Rene Russo in this movie, you must watch The Thomas Crown affair with she and 007 Pierce Brosden. Great romance, wonderful story. Both of you would LOVE it. I'm a movie buff and it's a favorite of mine.
Even finishing in 15fh place at the Open…that’s a lot of money…serious money…forget the Winnebago…he can move up…and finishing in 15th…qualifies him to be in other tournaments…
Don Johnson. Actor. Miami Vice (TV show in 80s). Nash Bridges (TV show last half of 90s).those were his most popular characters. Also in several movies. 🙂
I love a LOT about this movie. But maybe the best thing about it for me is I'd never heard of Keb' Mo' and after i left the theater i immediately sought out the singer of the "Crapped Out Again" song and have been enjoying his music for nearing 30 years now.
Ron Shelton writes a helluva sports movie, and Costner has just the right acting and athletic chops to bring it home. This doesn't work if he doesn't look like a golfer when he swings the club. Same with Bull Durham, he's clearly a natural athlete. What makes this work even better is the soundtrack. What an incredible movie soundtrack, from Keb' Mo' and Jimmie Vaughan and Bruce Hornsby to Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin and Amanda Marshall.
Glad you watched this, no one ever reacts to Tin cup and it's such a good movie. Please do "Legend of bagger Vance," with Will Smith, next another golf classic.
Lucky for me to live in the 80s when Costner became a thing. He made sports movies great. He brought in the aspect of the game while also having a romantic aspect that kept everybody involved.
LOL! The scenes at the end of the movie were filmed about 3 miles from where I live. My brother hadn't yet retired from law enforcement and they'd asked him to provide security protection for him, LOL. He still has pictures of Don Johnson "patting him down". It was comical.
Y’all should check out Mr. Brooks, Criminal, and 3000 Miles to Graceland to catch Costner in some villainous roles. And for Rene Russo check out Get Shorty. It’s based off an Elmore Leonard book and there are several great movies (ie Jackie Brown and Out of Sight) and an incredible TV show (Justified) that are adaptations of his work.
Another Kevin Costner sports related movie that's a worthy watch is "American Flyers"... ( It's been many a year since I watched It & only have a vague memory, but believe its one you may enjoy... ) ~ Also "A Perfect World" which is directed by Clint Eastwood ( Who also stars alongside Mr Costner... ) & the lovely Laura Dern...
I don't know if you ladies realize that Don Johnson and Kevin Costner were THE heartthrobs of the 80's and 90's. Don Johnson is also Dakota Johnson's dad...
The Greatest Game Ever Played (Shia Lebouf) Bobby Jones:Stroke of Genius (Jim Caviezel from Count of Monte Crisco ) also wonderful true story golf movies.
I love this movie. My old girlfriend and I went to watch this in the theater when I was in college. I met Rene Russo in Los Angeles on Sunset in 1998 and she was so cool. I forgot her name and I asked her and she said “Ponder on it” with a smile
"The doctor is his mother" riddle is often cited as proof of sexism, but it's actually word suggestion. There's another example, fitting of this movie's title. You tell someone to say "ten" quickly, 10 times. They start saying ten and usually count with their fingers. You can interrupt them "faster" so they count faster. Then you very quickly ask "What's an aluminum can made of?" and more often than not they reply "tin". Are they sexist against aluminum too? The riddle says "he" "boy" "father" "him" over and over repeatedly through the entire riddle. The male gender (and there being only 2 characters) is stuck on the mind. It's word suggestion, not sexism.
Love this movie. It has one of the greatest soundtracks ever. Anyone can go to the well of the best songs ever and put them in a movie. This soundtrack is full of songs that fit the movie so well. Plus they are catchy as hell. I bought it back in the day and used to listen regularly.
I had to watch this movie before I could join you and I loved it!! I love sports rom/coms and this has to be one of my favorites! I can't believe I missed this because my family are huge golfers. Thanks for picking this ladies!! Love ya both ❤
You guys HAVE to watch BOTH versions of The Thomas Crown Affair. The Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway original and then the Pierce Brosnan/ Renee Russo version. I would honestly be shocked if you disliked one or both. I'm also going to throw my hat in the ring again for you to watch the movie Tequila Sunrise with Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Raul Julia.
Hi Cassie & Carly, please react to these awesome and infinitly better movies that you're missing out on. No need for generic polls, these are all essential react-to material :) Memphis Belle, Red Tails, The Battle Of Britain, The Dambusters, 1941, Kelly's Heroes, Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can, The Blues Brothers, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Wayne's World, Waynes World 2, Three Men & A Little Lady, Police Academy 1 - 4, Wildcats, Coming To America, K-9, Ferris Beuller's Day Off, Armed And Dangerous, Airheads, Tango & Cash, Last Action Hero, Cocktail, Weird Science, Reservoir Dogs, The Quick And The Dead, Who's Talking & Look Who's Talking Too.
You made at least three separate posts bitching about the selection of this actually-good movie, then have the audacity to recommend Cassie watch absolute dogshit like K-9 and the POLICE ACADEMY movies? This isn't trolling anymore, clearly, this is some kind of performance art on your part. It HAS to be.
As a TCU fan, I appreciated Earl's choice of attire. When the film was released, I don't think anyone outside of Texas knew much about TCU, since their football team hadn't won a bowl game in 40 years.
I love this movie. Me and my set of friends constantly quote it. Our golf league just started last week, and I can confirm that everyone I've seen playing so far for the first week has a swing that looks like an unfolded lawn chair. 😂
David (Don Johnson) was huge in the 80s. I recommend watching the TV premiere movie Miami Vice. You guys would love it! And see Don Johnson in his prime.
“I like the fact that it wasn’t formulaic”. My thoughts exactly. I thought the movie was just OK but the end and how they wrapped that up was what made the movie
This is one of my all time favorites, growing up during the Tiger woods era I loved golf so much! Kevin Costner is great in this role but my all time favorite of KC is in 'The Postman'
Has to be my favourite golf film. Costner getting the yips on the driving range is hilarious, and so true. Got it myself on a par 3 once. Hit 4 balls in a row off the tee wildly out of bounds into the right. Never happened before and never happened since!!!
