Welcome to my tiny apartment workshop! I get a TON out of the space - woodworking, leatherworking, concrete, 3D printing and multimedia projects have all been made from this corner of our living room! And before this, I was making stuff out of two other apartments that had even smaller work spaces. I've learned a lot about taking full advantage of a small space, and I'm excited to share these lessons with you!
If you'd like to make something but you don't feel like you have enough space, I hope this video shows you that all you really need is some creativity, thoughtfulness, a little bit of planning and willingness to work in slightly unconventional positions!
Thanks for watching :)

Wow - you really do get a lot out of a small space! Can't wait to see how you set up the next one, but loved seeing how you made this space work for you.

Thanks! Making stuff from small spaces has definitely been a constant in my life (as have messy desks) - as a kid, it was hot glue, electronics and homemade fireworks from the desk in my bedroom!

was looking up apartment woodworking, came across your video and seeing the roll of leather sticking out, just like the one in my room made me feel very nice to know that there's others out there with limited space

There are so few videos on workshops in tiny apartments. I wish there were more of them. Your workshop is an inspiration. About 20 years ago I manufactured and sold underwater video camera housings from six-inch PVC pipe in a small one-bedroom apartment on Miami Beach. I would cut the 20-foot sections at the plumbing supply warehouse, drive to my sister's house, cut them into smaller sections, and take them home to my apartment. I had a Toyota Corolla that the back seat folded down, allowing me to carry the pipe. Where I live now I still make stuff in my apartment on my balcony. There are landscapers that come twice a month so if I need to work with any power tools I just schedule my activity with their lawn maintenance equipment noises. Also, we frequently have thunderstorms that roll through here in South Florida which makes for a perfect time to use my router. I have a very large drill press in my apartment covered with a green piece of plastic cloth which is the same color as the lazy boy chair in front of it. Nobody knows it is there but me. The most important tip is the one you gave which is to suit your activities to your space. I have found I don't enjoy making a lot of sawdust in my apartment. That means I have had to change the size and type of projects. Storage is still a big issue as is not wanting to let go of scraps. 20% of my apartment is filled with things I want to turn into a project, is a project in process, or something I know I will regret throwing out. Your videos and creations are very well done. I'm happy to subscribe.

The move will be exciting! Im hoping wifey enjoys the leather work. I'll then have to build her a few of these storage ideas. Good luck!

Congrats on the brand new upcoming space! It'll open up lots of new possibilities and perspectives. This was a great "shop tour". I've never thought of doing one, but this one was tastefully done and has me thinking...

Thanks, John, I’m excited for the change! I’d love to see a deep dive into your shop. As a fellow small-workshopper, I’m curious how you use your space!

Great space Morley. I tell my wife all the time if my shop was a little larger, I'd probably be a mechanic. And if it were a little smaller, I'd probably be a leather worker. Can't wait to see as your space changes if your interest change.

Thanks for sharing this, it looks great and your work looks amazing. There aren't enough videos showing real compact workspaces, I work out of an apartment as well, and I'm always looking to see how others cope with the constant struggle for space.

Thanks for sharing this Morley. You've deeply inspired me to want to start making things. I have a bunch of tools from when I worked years in construction, but now I'm going to college living in a small apartment. I miss building things and would like to get into small projects like this, but not sure where to begin or what to make. Perhaps I could start off with something simple and affordable. Could you give me any suggestions? I'm curious how you got started too!

I’m so glad this inspired you! Find a project that you REALLY want to make and start with that. With woodworking, big things are easier to make than small things.

Thanks for the tour! I’m trying to get myself decluttered and organized right now but all I could think was “Wait, what am I actually supposed to do with all this stuff?” I’ve wanted to get a nice shelf unit for storage but I’ve never had an experience with a proper wood shelf; I’ve had cheap Target MDF shelves and you could probably blow them over, much less store actual books or anything with some heft to it. How has that IKEA unit worked out for you? I like some of their offerings but I’m super jaded about ordering furniture without knowing how structurally sound it is.
@MorleyKert

Thanks! It’s been fine, I got it for super cheap on Facebook marketplace (like most of my furniture haha). I need to make a new tour with my current space!

Cutting wood in my apartment can be a pain with all the vacuuming that follows. Noise not so much, as my "workshop" aka sunroom /eating area sits below the laundry and furnace room of the apartment upstairs plus I have a huge rooftop tbh I think it creates more noise cutting out there. What I really need to do is integrate a good sturdy workbench, and make the room work better and that's how I ended up here from a search. what's kind of ironic is I live on St Clair West, maybe RU-vid searches by topic and geotag ?

Her preferred spots are on my chair (especially when I need to sit on the workbench), IN the couch (not a typo), on her cat tree or in a box! (Her cave, as we like to call it)

Great tips Morley! I think you would enjoy other non power tools for woodworking (like hand planes and chisels) as they don't create dust either. I'm case you ever want to expand your woodworking ☺️
