PART 2: • Tiny House Floor Joist...
This is an over detailed video of how I installed my rim board (out side piece) and the ledgers (which hold the joist hangers.) Please share your thoughts in the comments below. Do you like this style of video? should I continue to make them this way? Thanks for your support.

5:35 damn, I impressed with all these little techniques, with how to nail wood at the end. It's these little techniques that make the difference, between a Seasoned Veteran, who understands the science of Woodwork and carpentry, and the local Goober who just bounds crap in a sledgehammer... Thanks for sharing and educating us, this knowledge is priceless. I never learned this, or was taught the proper techniques in woodshop in school, it was such a disappointment, now that I look back. I think I was overlooked, because I was the quiet kid, at the back of the classroom, in a overpopulated classroom, while attending Palestine High School. I feel like these videos make up for those failures, by those educators.

your pretty good at this , im going to point out why its a good idea to put a barrier between the medal and wood , medal condesates causeing dry rot , the condensation gets trapped and cant get out , i would check into useing pt for that part of it , the concerns would be how does the new pt react to medal , i know it eats galvanized

Can you please explain a bit more about the width that you ripped your ledger boards to. You mentioned that over time they would shrink and you don't want the steel to make the floor uneven. Did you mount them to be a bit above the height of the steel beams, so there will be a slight gap between the floor board and the steel beams and the floor boards only sit on wood not steel?

So, Im getting ready to build the decking on my tiny home trailer... do you suggest treated or untreated 2x6s? I plan on using galvanized steel for the undercarriage instead of plywood, not sure if that makes a difference. I have a 30ft trailer so anywhere I can saved weight im trying.

Can you use half inch carriage bolts to bolt the rim board to the metal sub frame of the trailer? Im nervous that the screws won't be strong enough or secure enough to keep the board on the frame
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 8 лет назад
+wheredidileavemycell yeah you can. Drilling half inch holes into the steel will be a pain. 1/4 bolts would work fine.

Hey Dan.. Jeff here. I have a question. I have a 16' car trailer with a 2' dove tail. I need to know if I can still utilize the dove tail as part of my tiny house build without having to cut it off? The trailer also has pockets on the sides for removable side walls. .can I screw my bam boards to those pockets or would I need to cut them off?
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
For your dove tail you can cut done wedge shaped blocks and frame it up to your floor level. You can leave the side walls on or take them off. Personally I would grind them off and attach the beam to the frame. I think it would be stronger.

In this video, at 8:22 minutes from the beginning it appears like if you are nailing wood against a solid steel beam, Hoy do you get that? Are common iron nails able to penetrate harder steel? Are them special? I'll be very grateful if you clarify me that a bit. Thanks a lot and congratulations for this excellent course.

@heritagehunter1
@heritagehunter1 8 лет назад
Your trailer was 102 inches wide...How did you calculate the dimensions of your axle so they would not stick outside of your trailer
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 8 лет назад
The trailer was built around the axels. The leaf springs were already attached. So my main beams were figured with that in mind. Does that answer your question?
@glennmanchester9151
@glennmanchester9151 3 года назад
Personally instead of nails on something like this that's going down the road bumping around and vibrating my choice would be screws over nails and piece of mind that it's not going to vibrate loose or any such thing you know what I'm saying.. yeah screws are more expensive but sure do hold a hell of a lot better especially in that situation..
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 3 года назад
Agree but people who travel with these things are idiots. Their to heavy. The whole point of building it on a trailer is to bypass state and local building codes.

I have watched a few videos about tiny houses and those recommended placing a thin barrier between any wood and metal. Doesn't it cause moisture in the wood if you don't put a barrier of some kind between the wood and metal? I am confused about this. Please let me know. Thanks
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
agape713 people place a vapor barrier on to conventional concrete foundations to prevent moisture from coming in contact with the wood. concrete is a porous material and is in contact with the ground. steel is not. I framed for years and have inlayed hundreds of beams this way. I think people are doing it because they see it being done on a "regular" house and think its needed but from what i have researched, it is not. :)

You'll have to do some research. I won't be sharing my cost during my build. It effects the resale value of a tiny house. Call a steel yard for the price of steel. And call a trailer manufacture for Axel's and other components pricing.
