I frame walls at a plant in central Ohio, for Wendy's, McDonald's, and a lot more restaurants. This guy most definitely a framer. No doubt. Teaching ppl about crowns in lumber. Teaching about cutting on same side of measurement lines. Showing ppl just how much there is to notice, and keep in mind. I dig the channel. Oh and good catch of the red bull. I do that often... Just, with monsters. Haha

Thanks. I have been looking to learn tiny home framing so I can design my own on 'Sketchup'. I finally found your videos and I keep going back and forth to see all the details. You have the best details. Thank you.

Very cool build! But in any salted roads being a trailer mechanic I promise those boards will stand no chance. It needs a steel crossmembers with moister bleeds frame with a undercoat or protective layer. Like under board (like cardboard) or foam. Cuz I bet all those nails get loose in moisture I know that cuz lag bolts do to.

Love the recessed floor system. Definately helps to add height to the tiny house. Personally, I would have used screws for the hangers, but if you have a palm nailer... It definately cuts down on time.

+Jess-Psk K-R I haven't been able to take it to a scale yet. I moved it a few weeks ago and it did fine. that was with all the wall, floors and belongings in it. Next time I take it out on the road, I'm gonna go out of my way to hit a scale. I'm starting to worry its over 10k.

why not just put the floor joist on top of the frame and save yourself tons of time? i know it's a hight issue but every mobile home ever built was made that way and, the usually have a 10-12" frame. maybe build the frame so it with some longitudinal supports in the middle, use 2x4s for floor joists and, insulate with high density foam to regain your R-value. then you'll only loose 3 1/2" of overall hight. then you can box your floor joists around your wheels and, not have the wheel wells to deal with inside your structure. plus you could just lay out typar or mobile home belly material out and build your floor on it so, you don't have to waste any time puting plywood on the bottom. That being said, you are doing a great job and, i can see you clearly know what your doing. I just can't help but wonder why all the extra work.

Is there a mechanical reason you went for 16"s? Like the studs and joists need to be perpendicular or is it just how it is?

Nice job putting that floor system together my friend. I'm new to the channel (I am actually a carpenter from the Hickory, Charlotte area). I think that floor package looks awesome, but I do have a question and keep in mind I'm not criticizing your work or craftsmanship, but I was wondering if there was a reason that you used self-tapping screws to install the webbing and rim joist and not thru - bolted them..??..I realize you did glue it, but would you not worry about the screws vibrating or working loose with expansion or contraction...??? BTW, I really dig the stiletto hammer. I've used a Douglas for years, but they quit making them and I've had my eye on ordering a stiletto for a while to replace my Douglas. They're about the same price...
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 8 лет назад
I really don't know why I didn't threw bolt them. I was originally hoping to not have to drill the holes for the screw.s. That steal ended up being hard AF. I doubt they'll ever come loose.

watching this was really quite entertaining! very thorough, and full of needed information! of course you make it look very easy, but knowledge and experience is major too. I do want to ask, and i hope it's not invasive, but what is your profession, or area of expertise? im actually interested in doing this and would like to know which route to go for school. keep these videos coming ! :3
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
Sarah Correia Thanks!! :) I have 10 years of residential construction and remodeling experience. I am no longer doing this professionally just for a fun hobby. If i were to go back and do it all over again, I would have done a few years of electrical apprenticeship as well as plumbing. All the trades blend into one another and you can bridge what you learn from one to another. I had never welded but i was able to build my trailer because of what i knew from my construction years. If you were gonna go to school get a degree in construction management. It'll be much easier on your body over the long run.

would it be helpful to use treated wood as your rim boards, and then untreated as the rest of it?
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 8 лет назад
+Cameron Hartnett You could, depends how often you think it's gonna get wet. It is considerably heavier though.
@DeliveryLifeSC
@DeliveryLifeSC 8 лет назад
+Tiny House Customs the weight is definitely something to consider. I was only considering just the rim boards and undercarriage. Would rhino-lined (or something similiar) sheet metal be a more cost effective measure in weight and $ when it comes to the undercarriage. I feel like I make get put on the stake by saying this but I purchased a 30ft(without tongue) camper frame. it's a newer model dual axle frame that I planned to only reinforce the tongue by a triangle brace under connecting the tongue and catching each crossmember (a throw towards what you did with you custom built). Our plans are to use it as a semi permanent location and not so much as a "travel trailer". could you see any issues in this? I know the weight of my tiny house is something that must always be taken into consideration.
@daveseibert5543
@daveseibert5543 9 лет назад
Aloha, Since you built a custom trailer why not just weld the joist hangers to the trailer frame and save all that added weight?
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
Dave Seibet thanks for your question. the hangers are galvanized and put of a really harmful vapor when welded. plus I'm a carpenter and the best way i could get off the steel and start working with wood was this way. also i have no concern about my weight. if i need to i will purchase larger axels to transport it to its semi permanent home.

Hi thank's, have to do one, but on french caravan (less strong, and not aloud here) : does wood few increase trailer strength ?
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
fred san yeah I've only been in two tiny houses but my two main steel beams were so much thinker then everything else so its very strong. I leveled it out and placed it on 6 posts and its solid. its very strong and has no flex. once the walls and roof are on it will be very rigid. the wood really is just there to support the deck/floor. its not meant to be structural.
@fred-san

I think joists sandwiching steel like this is going to cause premature corrosion of the beams. You'll have no way of seeing it , being able to clean and repaint rusty spots. Water soaking into the wood while driving in rain and snow will keep these beams wet for long time.

@TinyHouseCustoms

+Abe Wiebe The thickness of the steel was 5" so I ripped it a little more so over time when the boards shrink they will end up being flush with the steel. It will prevent my house from being all out of level.

Why are you spacing at 15 1/4"?
@TinyHouseCustoms
@TinyHouseCustoms 9 лет назад
This is hard to explain here but. You start out by pulling 15 1/4 inches and then you go every 16 inches after that. It makes it so when you put a piece of plywood down a full sheet 86" will go from the edge of the floor to half-and-half on one of the Joist. Watch the plate layout video and it'll explain it better.
