TINY PRETTY THINGS | Explained in 15 Minutes 

I was so excited to see a black lead in a ballet thriller, and alas she was in the background. What happened to her mother and brother? They did not even try to work on that dynamic once she was out. They tried to pair her with Nabil, then all of a sudden she comes out with Oren. It seemed like we only saw her in 3 out of the 10 episodes. This was Bette’s show. I feel like she was similar to the African girl in 13 reasons why.

There are so many sex scenes it was ridiculous lol. I felt uncomfortable. Also Oren and Neveah getting together felt so contrived.

I couldn't stand Oren saying he loved her. Way too freakin fast. I would like someone to care and worry about the black girl for once. She's always the fixer for everyone else

I love Neveah being portrayed as feminine and delicate, but same, her voice just seemed forced. I just want poc to be seen as people, not every moment has to be some extreme struggle

I was so excited, and then like episode four neveah was officially a side character?! her arch, motive, and romance completely forgotten only to be thrown together at the end with Oren. OREN like what how whyyy??

I just can’t wrap my head around how you begin the series with Nevaeh aspiring to be a standout and star of the show and earning a solo spot to her becoming the next Olivia Benson in attempt to solve Cassie’s case and overthrow the authority of an institution she had only just arrived?? Everything was so rushed from the romantic relationships to the friendships. How does Bette go from calling her a rat on day 1 to then banding together to expose Ramon?? How does that work?!?!? How does any of this work?!?!?! To have been a fly on the wall of the writers room 😔 I will say the dancing was really beautiful but I wish the acting and storyline was strong enough to carry through with the show

it was such a weak show. my expectations were so high only for it to disappoint😭

Also Oren's story dont really make sense. The guy is ripped af and one of the best dancers but he gets bullied and they called him fat???

I had no idea in the books she had a heart condition. So not only have Netflix taken away disability representation, but they have decided to randomly make her family life a mess for no reason. It obviously hasn’t helped the plot any so I’m baffled. I wish I had been a fly on the wall in the meeting where the exec said let’s put her mum in prison for /plot/.

i loved Neveah at first but then the whole thing with her mom happened and she was really annoying with it like it might js be me but her mom did what she had to do that night, any mom would and she js thought of herself, i think she wasn't fair towards her mom but then again every single character annoyed me at some point.

I don't have issues with characters having issues, controversial personalities and tendencies. My issue is when it isn't handled properly. Caleb's reasoning for hating Nabil so much is SO STUPID. Couldn't get past that

Not what I was expecting too. Dancing was good but everything else was bad. Some parts felt offensive IMO. Can’t think of a character I liked that much.

These shows and movies keep on putting out "black struggles." I would have loved...well not loved, but to see something like a black ballerina have a medical condition not another struggle where a one family member is in jail and another got shot by the cops

The Muslim representation in this show isn't something we want. It was terrible and really pulls away from what a Muslim is supposed to be, IMO. Sure he had "faith", but there were a lot of things that did not fit and I did not like. For example, making a Muslim character do things that are strictly forbidden in the religion really defeats the purpose of giving them the "Muslim" tag. It felt like Nabil was basically just French, but the writers thought "let's just make him an object of Caleb's hate by also making him Muslim! And hey! Representation!" NO. Being shown praying and then drinking, walking around naked, premarital relationships, I mean, seriously? You could have made Nabil JUST French, without Caleb's unnecessary hate, and still proceed with the story. As a Muslim, I'd like that much better! A lot of their "representation" was also pretty offensive. The dream sequence when he was praying and suddenly he sees Cassie in front of him, was very offensive because we cannot bow down to anyone except our God. In many ways else, a lot of the things didn't fit and were honestly so cringe that I had to skip them. My opinion on the storyline? Okay. Enough to actually make me keep watching and the Delia reveal was good enough too. They could have really done something with this but they didn't. Also, since I'm tapping away at my keyboard, I'd like to draw a parallel to The Queen's Gambit here? I know there aren't many similarities in the shows but let me tell you what I liked in that show as compared to Tiny Pretty Things. 1. TQG is about Chess and the show really honors Chess. TPT is about Ballet, and there was more nudity than I saw dance. 2. Which brings me to point 2, TQG was great and easy to watch because I didn't have my finger on the f.forward button the whole time in case bare bodies show up suddenly, something I really don't want to watch. TQG was clean (a million times better than this one) and invested a lot more into the character arc of the protagonist and HER story (getting through an obsession, loss, drugs, alcohol, and coming out of it victorious). 3. THE FRIKKIN PROTAGONIST was the focal point of the entire show! Beth Harmon literally stole the show and was well supported by the other characters around her. Tiny Pretty Things was supposed to be NEVEAH's story, but sorry to say it just wasn't. 4. I think getting excellent dancers that are excellent actors too is a hard thing to do as was obvious with Tiny Pretty Things. Where, in TQG, Harmon (Taylor-Joy) had us feeling that we were in there watching the chess match with everyone else, all this cast did was make me feel real second-hand embarrassment for them. Anyway, I feel that the response TQG got on the platform, Netflix should take notes on what actually appeals to their audience and what doesn't. Unnecessary shots of arses and people dying out of nowhere (I mean really where do these things happen IRL?) really isn't something we want to watch. P.S. If you read all that, you cool :)

The only thing I actually enjoyed throughout the show was the music and the way they filmed scenes and I felt like there were so many different plots that for a second I thought I skipped an episode

I was really excited for this show because I was into pretty little Liars and gossip girl but this show was poorly acted. Too many steamy scenes and relationships that developed too quickly. How did Neveah kiss Nabil and then ended up with Oren?!!? That did not make sense. Then suddenly Nabil started to like June after he threatened her that he would let her fall. I am curious to watch season 2 but omg seriously.... the cast seems like amazing people, aspiring actors and the dancing was really good but this is on the directors.

Your review is so good and accurate! And it’s so annoying! Like it’s 2020 let’s lay these stereotypes to rest! Netflix really couldve done better. A show like this that used to be on netflix was dance academy and it was so much better. The dancing was just as good too! Ps Mateo is his name I think and he’s so cute! I love him and his Italian self! Lol 😂

Just another problem I had with this show (spoiler alert): they have a whole plot about those creepy old men taking advantage of teenagers, and I'm glad they talked about those issues, but they also make Bette and Matteo a romantized couple when she's 16/17 and he's obviously older than her like AT LEAST in his twenties. They also pair up Shane with that business guy that mentions that he has COLLEGE DEBT in one of the episodes like???? That's also grooming and Netflix tried to sugar coat it

Loved your review. It's like they put every cliché possible into the series and gutted a potentially great story of the competitiveness of elite dancing and young adults finding their backbone and proving themselves and filled it with meaningless/abusive hook-ups, no character development, and rabbit trail "plot" lines that do nothing to advance the story or make any sense. I was also disturbed by the depictions in every episode of what would be criminal sexual assault if these really were 16-year-old kids. Cut the nudity and the explicit sex so the target audience of the books can watch the show and be inspired by amazing dancers with actual character development.

I was so excited when I saw the first episode, but could not believe how they started to focus on her less and focused on Bette. Bette became the main character and her character was not original at all. How many shows feature young rich white girls with drug habits? I feel like these producers and companies want to do something just to say that they did it but half assing it. They want to pretend like they are showing diversity, but they really arent.

why does neveah need anyone anyway

Nabil and Caleb had more chemistry and development than Naveah and Oren, which is saying something

I wan to read the book but I’ll probably be mad for wasting my time watching the series once I do. This show was a poorly written version of Center Stage but with 20 times more sex, people falling in love with someone new every 2 days and people being overly dramatic. Also the teacher and student relationships....And Madame sending her students to work for rich old men that wanted to have sex with them in exchange for paying their tuition......YIKES. 😬

Ya the story dont work with the characters being 16. No. And totaly making the main character unlikable and totaly sidelining her story for petty drama within the school and a who dunnit. Also Its awwsome that the actors are dancers but the lack of acting chops shows, that would not matter as much if the story was good but unfortunately 😬 its just a bit cringe sometimes. 😐😶 Ya UNDERWELMING at best.

The trailer gave me much hopes and it made it look like that neveah was the actual leade but.... disappointed.very much disappointed. I watched a new netflix show after many months and this is what it was. Like I can literally count the amount of good things in the show, and it can be max 3-4.

I should probably watch this entire video before I comment. BUT...how in the hell do these kids happen to date people who not only work at their school...but these guys (the homophobic dude and the closeted dude...who immediately “forgives” the homophobic dude) are immediately willing to get involved in the student’s drama? The main character was a bit heavy handed on the sas, they overdid it with that character aspect (like why did she always have to have an attitude???). She was basically a dancing detective with a pseudo hood edge...Thanks, I hate it. PS. Did homeboy say “normcore”??? Hello 5 years ago called and they want their lingo back!

the flip flop between everyone hating bette and then being her best friend really made no sense. and it happened so many times through the series. bette really had no redeeming qualities.. her mum is HORRIBLE but that doesn't redeem bette's actions. The only character i actually somewhat liked was june.

Like I really wanted to see Neveah be the same kind of starring character that Gigi was in the book but since they screwed her character so bad I'm not even invested in her at all. Like if in Season 2 they suddenly remember that Neveah is supposed to be the main character it'll feel so forced

Shane, Alan and his husband were the most unproblematic ones and honestly I hated Neveah oh and that pervy man and the madame, cassie list goes long. And i think they are gonna dig Oren's eating disorder in season 2 more. But i still like the show. Hope they can fix the storyline's problems in season 2. It has a potential.
