I'm reviewing three new Tiny Whoop battery chargers from ISDT, Newbeedrone, and URUAV. How much is there really to say about a Whoop charger anyway? You plug it in and it charges your packs. Well, it turns out it's not necessarily that simple...

Hey, ISDT is not HV! well maybe they will release new FW (if it can be updated via USB C)

I really like the uruav/happymodel six channel charger. I got one with my Ur65. At first I was a bit skeptical, but it's really good. A friend and I tend to race whoops in the weekends and we just keep it plugged in and cycle batteries like nobody's business. I especially like that it has several input connectors so you're almost guaranteed to have _something_ that'll supply the juice.

Great that you start to care about the topic. How do charge times compare. We all know that differs heavily for large chargers even if they quote the same current. Do chargers charge to the right voltage? - The simpler Uruav tends to overcharge to 4.37-4.39V in my experience. I am missing the classical JB technical details ;-)

I find that the URUAV charger overstates the current battery voltage, charges at a higher rate that your setting, and finishes HV batteries at less than 4.35v (which at least is better than overcharging). It also lacks a audio indication when charging is complete, so you need to check whether the battery icon is blinking. My preferred charger is the Ultra Power UP-S6AC, which has the power supply built in, has all four battery type inputs, charges six at a time, beeps (rather loudly) when charging is complete, along with bright LEDs, and cycles thru four values, showing all six batteries at once. It displays charge type (reg vs. HV), current voltage, charge m-amps, and total m-amps added. It also includes a separate XT60 input for field charging. However, the URUAV beats it in two categories, it's smaller (although that depends on the size of your power brick), and it displays all of it's information at once, so you don't need to wait for it to cycle through the different options. Still, for me, the UP-S6AC is the best of the current crop. The big thing that is missing from all of these is an option to charge/discharge to a storage charge.

I have the URUAV one since 2months but under the 'Rcharlence' label from aliexpress (menuscreen looks a bit different though). Very decent Smart charger that charges up to 1000mA per channel, just missing storage voltage option. Also its USB out supports Quickcharge which is just awesome (charges my phone with 2A instead the legacy 500mA adapters) which the other toy chargers don't have. It replaces yet another device I have to carry to the flying field. In my opinion a nobrainer for the price.

_"Most Li-ions charge to 4.20V/cell, and every reduction in peak charge voltage of 0.10V/cell is said to double the cycle life. For example, a lithium-ion cell charged to 4.20V/cell typically delivers 300-500 cycles. If charged to only 4.10V/cell, the life can be prolonged to 600-1,000 cycles; 4.0V/cell should deliver 1,200-2,000 and 3.90V/cell should provide 2,400-4,000 cycles."_ The opposite happens when you charge lithium above 4.2V in an exponential curve. batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

An important thing to note about the HappyModel charger is that there's no low voltage protection for whatever battery you're using on the XT60 connector to charge your 1s lipos. I almost killed a new 4s because of this. Now I only use a plug. It doesn't come with a plug, but luckily I had a compatible one laying around. There's a charger on tinywhoop.com that's similar (BetaFPV), but supposedly has the low voltage protection. It's $25 though.

I charge all my 1s at 2c when I don't mind waiting and 4c when I'm out flying if I want to recharge them which considering I can fit 10+ batteries in my pocket and they're super cheap isn't very often unless I plan on flying for hours non-stop. The 4c charge doesn't seem to shorten the life of the battery by any noticeable amount I get about 2 years out of them on average before I start to notice degradation. I only charge to 4.25 though not 4.35 as the high voltage will shorten the life far more than a high charge rate, these batteries are all rated at 5c charge at least for the decent ones. 4.25 is slightly high voltage but, I've been doing it for years and it seems to have no real affect on the life.

The generic 'board' chargers like the Happymodel have one big issue - they will flatten whatever Lipo you plug into the XT60 if you're not very careful - I had a pack taken down to 2V per cell :-( I also found I got slightly longer flight times when I switched to 'better chargers' like the UP-S6AC (my current favourite), so I'm not sure they actually charge that well either. Having mAh displayed on the charger is very handy for keeping a general eye on your Lipos, and also calibrating the real or virtual current sensor on your quad - I really like having mAh on the OSD. I also personally prefer having AC input as an option as I rarely fly where there's no mains socket available.

Can we get a charging accuracy comparison? I have like 4 different chargers, and none of them charge consistently to 4.35v a cell. One will stop charging a cell that is between 4.2 and 4.35 if another battery is added or removed on another port, and won't charge a battery to 4.35 if it's already over 4.2. The other ones have individual ports that over or undercharge. Features are nice, but consistently accurate charging voltage is the baseline nothing I have yet meets except my parallel board on my full size charger.

I fly 1S-6S and normally I take great care of LiPos larger than 1S, but it's curious that no manufacturers have ever released a charger with storage functionality for their 1S LiPos. I've seen a few FPV guys store their 1S at full charge.. only to find their capacities don't change. They don't ramp HV nor abuse charging voltages of course. Are these your experiences as well?

Joshua Bardwell, can you do a review regarding the different whoop connectors. You say that JST has less voltage drop than MMCX? Can you prove that? Voltage is REALLY important for whoop performance.

I'm just repeating what others have told me here. I haven't tested it yet.

I like knowing how close the battery is to charged...

so i could charge my 350mah batteries with the 0.2A Setting on the UR65 right? It would just take longer but would be just as safe right?
@RADERFPV
@RADERFPV 3 года назад
You can safely charge 350mah's up to .7A, wouldn't go higher than that. The safe charge rate is 0.3A on that charger, that's the closest to 1c. I wouldn't bother overthinking it though, the draw from the quads will be killing the little 1s lipos faster than anything else. Thankfully they're cheap to replace.

This is an old video, but I got a Beta FPV Meteor65 Pro and the included charger ended up charging both of the included batteries to like 4.7 volts. Ruined both of them. Lucky they didn’t blow, since they were unattended (my mistake).

No love for the BetaFPV 1S lipo charger? Although good video and I will probably pickup that HappyModel charger

That's a really good charger. I just don't happen to have it at this exact second.

The lack of charging/discharging to storage voltage on all(?) of the 1S chargers on the market is disappointing.

I am working on this blatant oversight.

And I'm working on modifying one of those Eachine chargers (identical to the Happymodel) so it can charge 2S packs. Just waiting on a couple of $3 parts from China for the mod.

@@JoshuaBardwell - looking forward to seeing your solution - I really want a 1s charger with the ability to put the batteries to storage.

Just fly them. You're talking a 3 minute flight to drain them and nominal charge is where we normally land anyway. Never understood that concern.

@@JoshuaBardwell I recommend the URUAV Lipo Killer to address this. It's great for completely depleting any LIPO, but it also has balance lead pins you can plug into to storage deplete your battery, which works great for 1S. They're like $8. I know you can't use it to charge up to storage voltage, but its easy enough to charge them to at least storage and them plug your batteries into it to get them back down.

Actulay I have a question now.. Does the happy model shut down once the battery has a full charge? Or do you have to keep monitoring it.

Yeah it shuts down. They all do. It'd be really dangerous if they didn't!

@RADERFPV
@RADERFPV 3 года назад
You can just grab the UC1 adapter he mentions at 6:21, then charge off any USB outlet/powerbank. It will be cheaper, and you'll be able to use for more than just this one charger.

Imo the ultrapower up-s6 is much easier to use, takes barrel or xt-60 input. 6 channels and a screen to charge. And USB power output.

Did Joshua say he charges all his batteries to 4.35V ? Even his 4.2V Batteries ? Why ? How is that possible and does it not damage the battery ?
