Here is a sample of my upcoming how-to videos that I will be releasing soon. This one is a few years old but will be included in the set. It explains in great detail how to install a tip and ferrule from start to finish. Comments are welcomed!

Great and informative video. I would like to know where I can get one of the "live concave centers" for my chuck. Much appreciation.

Also I do what the player wants, threaded or compression. I like threaded but don't keep the glue relief hole. I cut off the end till the tenon is exposed, give a face put the tip on, that's my way. Nothing wrong with your method.

I am new to this, and just bought a cue lathe, my question is how do you know how deep you are cutting from the tip to the ferrule to make it as flush as possible? I see that you are going forward then cutting sideways from right to left, now if you go a little or more than forward, you will now be cutting deeper than intended when you go sidways from left to right.

What cutting tool do you prefer for turning down the tenon and ferrule? It looks like a carbide insert.

What do you use for the first plastic sleeve over the cue to chuck it in the lathe?
@krowncustomcues

It is a simple plastic collet with a slit.

For the average Joe who wants to start refinishing cues and building sneaky petes with the hopes of eventually building a cue what lathe would you recommend? Mid-America is currently not taking orders unfortunately but the Cue Smith is available.

It looks like you are running the Mid-America.

Yes, Todd is no longer offering the mid America lathers at the moment. I like Hightowers Cues Smith as well but you would want to get the mid-sized version as it has the moveable headstock.

You can't thread them properly unless you have a metal lathe and live tooling. . Threading is not a sales pitch. Customers don't even know if their ferrules are threaded. Threads made for MECHANICAL bond. Not just more epoxy. Your loose fit plus quick-set epoxy will eventually develop a gap at the bottom. It's the nature of the beast. There are thousands and thousands of shafts out there with nasty glue ring at the bottom because the ferrules were not threaded. Wood moves. Epoxy shrink. Joint collars and caps should be threaded too.

I 30 years of cuemaking I have never had an issue with a compression fit ferrule. To each their own I suppose. If you like threading, by all means, thread.

Joey don’t quit your day job. You’re clueless. Rarely are ferrules threaded.
