One thing's for sure, Gingko are good at dishing out humble pie! By the time they even start to respond, I have usually forgotten what design I had in mind. Keep on. You remind us what might be well to avoid. Brave artist!
You have definitely hit the nail on the head. tey are a frustrating species to try and style as bonsai sometimes. Unless you have had the opportunity to work them from saplings. I have a few cuttings that are just starting to reach an age that can be wired safely.
Send some of that sun over here! Ginkgo seems so challenging. I understand, now, why I don't see them often. They are prohibitively expensive where i live. They are gorgeous though and great work on these ones!
Everything is prohibitvely expensive these days - including gas and electricity!! I think, they tend not to be a popular tree just because they are more difficult to style quickly. They can be quite an ugly tree sometimes and because they scar so easily trunk chops are not a good option.
It's a ginkgo kind of day today. I've just watched Guy Watson repot his. I think the ginkgo itself is so strange and old that the bonsai should keep those characteristics. I don't feel like it'll ever be the perfect bonsai but that's what makes it fun and challenging!
Thank you for all the helpful tips and information Xavier. I have 1 small 2 year old Ginko I grew from seed that is 4 inches tall. Very slow growing for sure.
I have never had ginkgo Xav and I don’t think I will get one any time soon but interesting to see you working on yours in a bit of sunshine nothing better than warm sunshine when it appears. All the best with yours.
Thanks for sharing Xavier. You reminded me about big decisions awaiting to be made on my ugly ginkgo. Big cut on the top and an attempt of grafting the bud in the place where the tree is missing the branch. No wiring - I attach great importance to your words about wounds and scars.
Prehistoric - a wonderful word to describe this species. You.ve certainly got yourself some challenging trees there Xav. I agree with your approach - just wait & see what happens. Sometimes it's the best way! 👍👍
Good decisions 👌 I've actually just been gifted of 8 small ginkgo little trees grown from pot..and you just gave me a lot of ideas of how they can develop, thank you! can't wait to start working on them!
Hi Xavier, do you get a lot of suckers from your Ginko? mine seem to sent out 4/5 a year. I chop them off each year but am i just competing with nature. It was interesting that you said their natural growth is in a flame style as tree no.7 looked perfect for that style. You could accentuate the branches spiraling up around each other like smoke rising from a fire or (in more nautical parlance) the vortex left behind a propeller. I do love the autumn colour but need more branches for a really good show.
Thanks Xavier. So now I‘m watching ads to make you earn money. Welcome. 😁🙋♀️ Meanwhile in Salzburg: Weather forcast is telling -4 degrees Celsius during night… 🥶 and no Ginko in my collection 🤷🏼♀️😘🙋♀️
Thank you Martina - are the ads better than me?? We are also going through some cold nights right now but the repots have to happen. I just did a lovely nursery Fuji that started at about 3ft tall...
Good on you Nerina. I will be doing pruning for bud selection just as the buds start to awaken in early spring. If I wire I will do that then as well. Then just let them go until late early summer :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat In former videos, before Tony sent you those self-made-chopsticks, you used something like a (maybe it wasn’t a) red pencil? And hope I’m allowed to remark that I adore your progression regarding your wording about yourself. Can’t say how happy I‘m about that. Maybe I have to expand this one again. Maybe in a different setting. God bless.
@@oachkatzlsmum Ah - I know the one you mean. Yes, that has been resigned to the chopstick tip. Thank you - I have decided to try and be a little less mean to myself these days :)
I haven't tried and I probably won't. They have such a slow metabolism that I have my doubts. I think Ryan neil also suggested they may not be the best subject for that mehtod of propagation. Though you are right that it would solve some design issues for me :)
