Hey Fabricators,
I finished painting Maulers chassis, so I figured I'd give some advice on painting chassis in a garage since I recently painted Wratchet and Mauler.

Hey,great show,I'm with ya in Rust-Oleum,great paint. Myself I gav a street rail, rarely sees a trail, anyhow ,I use rust oleum gloss,and rusty metal primer, and a brush!and no one knows cuz you don't see brush marks,how ? figure out working in cold garage,keep paint in house at room temp,heat up cold garage,apply paint to cold metal,paint dries slowly,brush strokes disappear due to extended cure time,and way glossy,stuff blends nicely also,always adding tube , upgrades,

Ah, that's clever, you're using physics to your advantage. 👍

Have you tried Rustoleum Hammered brush on? Works great and very durable with no brush marks and easy/clean touch up. You can also thin it to have less of a hammered surface. Hammerite brand also has some great smooth and hammered paints. Ace hardware is the only local place that I can buy/order the Hammerite. Thanks for another good video.

Nice job Mike👍. If you didn't like painting the roll cage and you want to show a bare metal look, you can spray paint it with clear paint. To me painting the roll cage is only for rust prevention. I clear paint a bicycle frame at one time and I was satisfied. I guess it's how you , as an owner, like it.

I saw someone do that once, and it was really cool. They told me it was hard to paint because they couldn't tell where the paint was. 😁

I prefer to spray stuff with automotive grade paint over rattle can for durability - even compared to rust-oleum. No matter how you do it, prepping and painting a roll cage is a lot of work. If you're using automotive paint in a spray gun, the 3M PPS cup system allows you to spray upside down which is very helpful for cages and such because the gun doesn't run out of paint while inverted. This works because the cups are sealed and collapse with vacuum from spraying so there are also no leaks. HVLP guns have less overspray, but you need a good compressor.

Interesting on that gun, never heard of that. Honestly that would make a huge difference. Thanks for the info. 👍

Hey man, I would have thought someone in the powder coating game would be watching and just do it for free. I'm dreaming. 😅😅 Seriously, painting a complete cage really sucks. But what you've done is an awesome job. So thanks for sharing the jobs that suck but are essential in building an off road car. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia .

Hey Kevin, nobody was knocking on my door wanting to powercoat this chassis. Maybe my doorbell isn't working. 😁 Peace mi amigo. ✌

hey hey. watched your video of the ackerman system and your baja build. it made me wonder what if you flip A arms and spindles from left to right side and move suspension forward accordingly. then you should have room for rear steering. would be cool to see the diffence and for you to give a hands on verdict on the effect. steering rack would need to be upside down too or be 2 axles with a gear on each to change direction of input rotation.

Paint job looks great Doc , I have tried a few different techniques over the years including powder coating my entire frame and in the sand dunes the tires blast the powder coat over time. I want you to try this stuff , I believe you will love it. It comes in 3 colors Black, Gray & white. Sometimes i will mix some gray and black and come up with a neat color, It is a high gloss and wipes mud down really easy. You have to try it , It outlasts anything I have used ,including powder coating in some areas. I brush it on and the brush strokes wont be seen. Try it. Keep up with the great videos . I tried to attach a picture here with my comment but I couldn't figure out how to do it. The product is Rust-Oleum Hammered. This stuff dries hard and does not chip easy.

Try brushing on the rustoleum hammered paint. It leaves ZERO brush marks because of the hammered separation look. It is definitely a glossy finish but it hides all blemishes. it goes on thick and takes a loooong time to fully dry, but Its pretty cool stuff.
@DougBugBuilder
@DougBugBuilder Год назад
Someone else mentioned that, I'll experiment with it. Sounds like it might be a good solution. Thanks for the tip.

@@DougBugBuilder great! I found the best way to do it is to prime or brush flat black underneath it first otherwise it separates a bit too much right on bare metal.

I showed a 1964 GMC swb, I show in the “unrestored” category and never got as much as a nod. This was a one owner, 43,006 original miles. I took it back home tore the truck down and did my frame the same way. It had two coats of semi gloss, scotchbrite pad, rolled on. Two coats of semi gloss Ace hardware paint and rubbed out with 400 grit. I end up putting in a 350-350 combo, air and reupholstered front seat. The truck looked impeccable. I took first at the Truckin Nats and sold it at the show for 16k in 1994. We just used alot of sweat equity and cold nights. Well worth it!

We usually powder coat chassis like these. But it's a bit more expensive. A lot better than paint for offroading. Also for your application I'd suggest get a truck bedliner paint, mask off the areas where you'll be having any sort of bolts, and just paint or spray it with that, for offroad use, nothing can beat that.
@DougBugBuilder
@DougBugBuilder Год назад
Oh having it powdercoated would be nice! But I wasn't going to go that far with it. I thought about using bedliner spray in some areas, I suppose I still could. Good tip on masking off where the bolts go through. 👍

Most pro off-road teams do not powder coat or paint the chassis of their race trucks or race cars. This is because it is easier to see cracks developing and the chassis is always being worked on. Before each race the chassis is rubbed with an abrasive pad, then sprayed with CRC or WD40. This is ok in hot dry climates like California, but not so good in damp climates where the chassis will quickly develop some surface rust.
@saugod
@saugod Год назад
@@ataxpayer723 I worked for 2 FSAE teams, now I work for an offroad and drift race car team, and we powder coat all our chassis, first we build our cars to race not only one season, but multiple races across the world and also multiple seasons. Secondly about chassis cracks we model and analyse our chassis in CAD first, some parts are overbuilt, if that's not enough we inspect full chassis before every race.
@ataxpayer723
@ataxpayer723 Год назад
@@saugod According to an offroad crew chief that we know, a powder coated chassis is more difficult to repair, or weld on, compared to an unpainted chassis.
