Michael Gaboardi I'm normally a brass player but I learned bassoon and I can't not play it for the rest of my life.

Glad to hear that a balance hanger isn't required. I had never thought about, but like the idea of, keeping the bassoon at the same angle standing and sitting. Also, it really does make sense to distribute the weight and have the strap on the right shoulder. Finally, I really appreciate the postural suggestions and how they influence breathing, tone color and relaxation. I am also a yga teacher and I can see your yoga practice coming through in these ideas, which I haven't heard expressed elsewhere before. Thanks for sharing these thoughts.

Hi Eryn, I'm just re-starting playing my bassoon after many, many years. When I was younger I had the normal neck houlder, which is not really comfortable. I now tried the x-formed Lady Strap ... it's o.k. But then I saw your video ... and today I receaved the shoulder strap. IT IS PERFECT for me, as I always played bassoon standing. I only play sitting in the orchestra. Thank you so much.

Do you need any special hooks installed to have a strap like this? Or do all bassoons have the place you connect it?

The bassoon should have a circular ring on the back of the boot joint (lowest joint of the instrument) on the metal where the long joint and wing joint go in. The strap will attach to the circular ring. Some bassoonists use a balance hanger to help lengthen the harness, but I have never needed one.

Great chicken TIP!! :) Do you recommend Balance hanger? I used to use same BG sling with the Balange Hanger. (Now I use Zappatini)

+Ryan Choi The Balance Hanger is the only way I have had any success with the other straps. But I found it didn't give me the freedom of movement I was used to.. Will you send me a link to the Zappatini- I'm not familiar.

+Eryn Oft I kinda think that people doesn't use balance hanger prefer side mounting strap or sling but balance hanger users tend to have a middle monting strap or slings.

I want to play standing up with my bassoon in the jazz band im in, but I don't have a loop for the hook, any tips?

I have a Saxholder harness as I needed something more supportive as I march bari sax. I switched to the longer chord in order for it to reach the ring that I have on the boot joint of my bassoon. I really want to use this harness standing up, but the G flat thumb key can’t open as it rests on my leg. Do you have any ideas?

The bassoon should come across the body. Try to not balance the bassoon on the leg. To help keep the bassoon from balancing on your leg you might consider switching harnesses or adding in a hand rest to better balance the bassoon and the weight. Hope this helps!

Yes- in the bassoons for $5000 or less I demonstrate the instruments. If you hear bassoon in an intro credit, that's me! And I have an album that will be released later this month.

I am so flattered. I had no idea anyone watched any of those anymore. I will try to work a Vlog in when there is something exciting happening. Mostly my days are a series of reed making, teaching lessons and playing bassoon and then repeat! :)
