i keep my sketchbook + art supplies at my bedside when i wake up the first thing i do is put on my glasses and draw in my sketchbook it's either i'm really passionate about drawing or i'm obsessed

"Don't be afraid to start" *That* is seriously the most defining moment in my opinion. Its also the absolute most difficult step to make. Its so hard to be awful at something by comparison and feel you're behind everyone else and you'll never catch up. Its super easy to psych yourself out and just give up. But its okay to be awful at it, its okay to be behind, and its okay to want to give up, *just don't* . Keep at it, and you can make it happen. OH! And if you do stop? That's okay too, just pick up that pencil and try again.

"Study artists that you like!" I like musical artists. Does that count?

I'm 12 and I'm an artist who literally does all of this but me and my brother and crazy pro gamers too and we wanted to make a game of our own for the past 3yrs and our mom said "why wait until you grow up why not start now?" And we were so happy to hear she approves of our goals since our parents do business and we thought they would think it was a waste of time for us to focus on games but thankfully they support us and we already started planning and sketching the characters, choosing names, and the story as well one day......our game might even be famous! But for now that's only a dream....

i once tried making a character out of "imagination" (more like pure emotions) and i can proudly say it's the best art i have ever made! So the only comment i can give! drawing from reference is really important but sometimes you just have to "let your emotion and, imagination come out" even if its only just a few times!

References, references, references! Use them people! Great video Den! A lot of good stuff here for people to dig into. I went to an art school as well and like you, learned most of what I know from online tutorials. If you love what you do there's no better reward! 😀

Thank you so much! Since I was younger I always wanted to be an animator. When I was in high school I told myself to draw everyday to get better and learn how to be more creative. After drawing for a couple weeks I grew frustrated because I was not able to draw from my head. I was only able to copy and draw from pictures. I then told myself that I wasn’t good enough because I would see all these other artists on social media. I then went to college and majored in communications which is good but I’m not really sure what jobs that I would like with it. Now I’ve done more research on animation and wished that I would have majored in art. I am now going to master in art so hopefully then I will be content. 😊

I really liked Amino but, 1. It took up too much data & space 2. Amino's communities were too toxic for me So I deleted it and I have no insentive to ever go back.

If someone's going to ask me for art advice I'll link them to this video. I would say the same things you said because they're all true!

The reason I wanna be an animator is because I have this huge imagination and i think about what the characters would look like and I draw them constantly but I can’t animate them and it sucks cause I really wanna make my imaginations come true

For me I quit drawing for a while and now my art style is messed up so it's hard, you should try drawing atleast once every week so you can maintain your art style.

This is very inspiring, I’ll try to practice every day this entire quarantine and see what’s my progress

Thank you for this information. All the advice you've mentioned is really good and I realize now what I should do. I was feeling rather lazy and sad about my artist journey but this help me get back on the saddle with a better understanding.

Honestly your tips don’t just relate with artists and animators. It relates very well with anything that people would want to aspire to. Your tips could really work well with how I want to be a musician. It works well with how a someone would dream to be great at sports, people want to improve their diet and many other else. Thank for makeing this vid. I know it is 2 yrs after this was posted but it really helped me out. I have been doing art since I could pick up a pencil and am currently Thinking about doing animation a lot and plan out a bunch of projects. But I never take the initiative and do them I just keep haveing ideas until I push the old plan away and want to do a new project. This really helped me make up my mind to start. Artist tips: 1) go on pintrest and make an art board, find reference for poses, colors you think look nice and anything else that inspires you, reference is so important to learning and improving. 2) you dont have to draw everyday, draw when you want to draw and draw something yoh like. If i dont feel inspired i wont like what i make and i wont wanna draw anymore, donr feel bad about not doing it everyday. 3) Copy artists you like or styles you like, even trace, whatever helps you learn and feel confident. 4) draw things as you see them and then learn to simplify, if you go in right away and you dont understand what your drawing then of course you wont understand its base elements.

I agree 100% with all this. I find animation very time consuming, but a lot of fun. I've been doing it for 11 years and never looked back. I've seen a bunch of animators who are doing it solely to get big or to get recognized, and it takes away the fun that animation offers. I honestly believe animation is the best thing to go into, and my life would never be the same. I'm glad you're addressing these tips. They're very helpful to any beginners into this (:

When you started saying that a lot of people tell you that they want to be an artist or animator, I was reflected. Everything you said at that point gave me a reality shock. I really needed those words, so thank you very much. You already became one of my examples to follow XD

Recently I went to Disneyland and decided to check out this thing called “Animation Academy”. It’s basically where artists or employees teach you how to draw certain Disney/Pixar characters. Afterwards, my mom and I saw a (I guess professional) artist/animator, and we decided to ask her questions about what I should do to reach my ultimate dream job as an animator. The VERY FIRST thing she recommended was drawing everyday, and let me tell you, it really does help. Den isn’t kidding, it really helps! I may have only been doing it for a week or two, but I’ve already started noticing some difference in my art. It isn’t a huge improvement, but I am noticing slow improvements as I go. So, in short, DRAW LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW!

When I first joined DeviantArt, I was pretty terrible at.. everything art related. But two and a half years later I've improved a lot. I'd like to believe that part of the reason why I improved so rapidly is because of all of the feedback and exposure I've had since then

you just pointed out everything I knew I was doing wrong 😭😭 like feeling like im cheating just because I use reference. idk why but my mind is always telling me to become the best by creating something all on my own without references and in the end I end up nowhere because everything I create I deem disappointing😭😭 but now im trying to take it easy on myself and understand that im not going to be perfect at something overnight. I'm obsessed with a show named mr pickles and I've wanted to make my own version of it yk diff animal diff story etc but never knew where to start/was uninspired cuz growing up I was told my art sucks, this has given me some hope, thank you
