Additional Tricks and Tips for cutting Cast Acrylic on a 3018 CNC. We review Type of Acrylic, the tape method, Job Start & Zed Paper Method, Should you keep the paper on your acrylic (Hint, No), & Clean Up.
Remember Cast Acrylic has a higher melting point than Extruded Acrylic. While I have no issues Engraving or Doing the Detail work on Extruded, you will need to find a cooling method to cut it, such as the Water, Soap, and Hot Glue Method, but that is for a different video.
For homing the Z or ZED axis with the paper method, I go down an extra 0.1mm to 0.3mm depending on material I am cutting. For Cast Acrylic I go down an extra 0.2mm normally once the paper catches.
For the tape method you can use Painters Tape and even Double sided Carpet Tape. As for Glue I use Super Glue, but there are several options out there that you can use.

Right now all I have is extruded plexiglass can you show a video of the best settings, I am a visual and hands on and hands on only seems to not work for me. I have a 3018 CNC pro at 1000 rpm. Bits I currently have are blue coatings end mill bits, I have a diamond bit, and I have a 2 flute flat nose and ball nose bit. Any suggestions?

I never had luck with extruded acrylic on my 3018. I was only able to cut that on my longmill, and even then it was a pain.

Would you help me get the toolpaths for an STL file to be carved on my Vevor 3018 Pro (modified to 3040)? Unfortunately I don't have the appropriate software to do it. I would very much appreciate your help. Tks.

I would look at PixelCNC or EstlCam, you can try both for free and generate toolpaths for stl files.

I have only had a cnc for a few months and I love working with it. I just want to thank you for your posts and your attention to the small detail. Your humor in these details is also a breath of fresh air. Of course, I have made my mistakes and that is where I have learned some very needed lessons that have made my work get better each time. Keep up the good work and I will be following your work consistently. God Bless.

Double sided tape works great. Don't put too much of it. In my opinion it's faster and safer than tapes and super glue. About positioning on the Z axis I spin the bit manually and I lower it down till it scratch the paper/foil. Your videos are great!

I just recently switched over to double sided tape. I did not think about manually lowering the Z axis. Thank You!

Unsure about cast vs extruded "melting point". It's still the same base material. Still, cast acrylic will be way flatter than extruded, so much less thickness variation when milling ==> almost no gunk on milling bit. Same goes for FFF processes, where a cast heated bed is flatter than extruded ones (same temps/melting points anyway). Probing on CNC routers can be "hit or miss". The best approach would be to perform a surface probing (same thing than FFF "bed probing") - aka "height map". This would also solve the Z0 (Z homing) thing. Non-inductive probe + z-offset = winner, yet idk if it's implemented on GRBL yet (would require G29).

Cheaper then super glue and never a problem for holding down a work piece is to use contact cement. Apply to both painters tape surfaces and let it sit for about 10 minutes (until slightly tacky). Never had a problem with the work seprating from the table. Sure is cheaper then super glue.

I just started trying out some double sided tape. Will check this out once I see how this tape works.

Can you use the bits that came with my 3018 Pro for etching cast vinyl ? If not what do you suggest ?very new at this I can run a 3 D printer but not sure on this .I am going to atempt to cut a simple edge lit sing that says "Home Sweet Home " I thank you for any help .Enjoyed your video

I have not cut Vinyl, just acrylic. Vinyl I would assume could be cut with a v bit or a Drag Knife. Thank You for watching.

@@jerrysayers4002 Yeah there is a lot going on when you first start out Im sure I called something by the wrong name several times. I have cut the cast acrylic with the bits it came with. So for cutting you will want to use the end mill and to engrave the VBit. There are better bits out there, but the ones they come with work. Its better to get a hang of thingss with the cheap bits rather than breaking a $60+ bit on just learning. Also make sure you use CAST Acrylic, NOT EXTRUDED. Extruded will gum up on your bit, unless you use a coolant.

Hello i wanna ask you how much is your depth engraving on acrylic for best result and what type of bits do you use?
@D.E.Hammer
@D.E.Hammer 2 года назад
With a vbit i go between 0.1mm and 0.3mm depth. With a drag bit I have about 0.3mm to 0.5mm pressure. I would recommend a spring loaded drag bit for engraving, just gives a better result in my opinion.

what are the speeds like feedrate, rpm doc, to cut the cast acrylic?
@D.E.Hammer
@D.E.Hammer 3 года назад
I would start with 225mm for Feed, 9000 for RPM, 0.1mm for depth per pass.

@D.E.Hammer
@D.E.Hammer 3 года назад
Not sure I understand exactly what you are asking, but if you are asking how much money you can make then that is dependent on what you make and how much you can sell. I was able to make the money I spent on my machine in 4 or 5 months, but the first couple months I was still learning how to use it and finding what I liked making.

I use illustrator for design, Cc pro for tool pathing ( I like the engrave option they have on pro, but have used the pocket that works as well.) Then a r-pi4 with 0.7 gsender.
