My uncle is a retired commercial airline pilot and he would always say, "the most dangerous part of my job is the drive to the airport". That was always reassuring to me, when flying.

Numbers don't lie and people with numbers do. That saying is the furthest thing from the truth. SO bloody annoying when every single Joe Blow and Irene regurgitate it. Fly. By all means. Just don't be ignorant. Don't believe and regurgitate every single bit of nonsense you read and hear.

Thanks man. I just wish that when turbulence does get bad that the pilots would come on the speaker and tell us that everything will be ok. Sometimes they do and I appreciate that. But they dont always. Even if they are lying it would be nice to hear. Great hair BTW

I agree. That’s really dependent on who the pilots are. I try to reassure people because my wife is a nervous flyer and I know that helps. But no everyone feels the same way about it.

Totally agree. It would have made huge difference if the pilot can assure us everything is under control during a turbulence. I guess they are so used to turbulences and may never imagine some passengers back there are really afraid of the turbulence.

One time I was flying over Greenland in the winter and we had some BAD turbulence, at once point we dropped ~20 ft out of nowhere. A lot of people (including myself) screamed and many people were jumpy. But then afterwards, one of the flight attendants, who looked like James May, was laughing and joking and said, "Normally you have to pay for that kind of excitement!" He was all smiles and completely unphased. That really helped me relax for the rest of the flight. :)

I used to be a very nervous flyer. It wasn’t until I found out I was playing basketball, weekly, with a few pilots that I gradually became less and less nervous. I always tell myself, “those pilots showed up every week for basketball” For turbulence I always just quickly close my eyes and visualize that I’m on a road trip and i hit some bumps on the highway. That always works for me.

I would just be happy if I am just scared. Its hard for me even weeks before, I start to shake so badly just thinking about it. But thanks for the tips. I just want to say that its not easy to be there for people like me and I really appreciate when the crew helps you and speak explaining whats going on. I was once suffering in silence in the airplane and turning white when one person of the crew took me to the cockpit to meet the pilots, they said to me that we will have turbulence and watching them so calm... I almost even noticed! You as a pilot if you have the chance to speak even in the turbulence to chill the people, I promise you that makes a lot of difference. Thank you so much for the time that you dedicated to this video. :)

a lot of airlines offer courses against fear of flying .. i took one such course with my national carrier 10yrs ago, and i am cured .. u see the ins and outs of flying, u visit the plane on the ground including the cockpit, u talk to the pilots, atc ppl and flight attendants and u learn about the structural aspects of planes, oh and at the end we got to take a short back and forth real flight, where we applied the coping techniques we learned .. i am now a very happy flyer !

Thanks for the calming tips! I’ve only flown a handful of times as an adult and was only surprised once. Our plane got caught in a wake from a larger aircraft after takeoff but before cruising. It felt like the plane braked , then my arms were up in the air a few times, weightless. The sensation of falling made me almost puke. Ever since my trip home I’ve not flown. During the trip home I had so much anxiety. Just haven’t been able to fly since. It’s embarrassing to admit. I hope get past the new fear, but think from that experience have found. I’m more afraid of small spaces mixed with a since of no control and not necessarily the flying. Prior to that experience I loved flying. It’s faster, cheaper, and you got to watch tv or read or play games. I was never nervous anxious or anything.

While this may sound crazy- hear me out. One thing that may help is to go take a flying lesson at a small local airport near your home. I had a similar experience as you. I went from loving flying to not doing it for 10 years! Learning to fly small airplane has been AMAZING! You learn why things happen the way they do, and it de-sensitizes things. Also, you truly get to experience just how much fun it is to fly!!!

I've been flying since I was a child. My first flight was in early 1970's on Continental Airlines from LAX to New Orleans on a DC-10. We took off and we had to make an emergency landing back into LAX due to a flight control issue according to my very nervous mom. We went out over ocean dumped fuel and landed back safely. That was my first and only flight on a DC-10 and last time every flying Continental Airlines per my mothers orders every time I fly until Continental demise 10 years or so ago. Next flight was in 1974 on a United DC 8 or 9., I don't remember where flight originated from, but we landed into LAX and I was able to sit up with pilots and flight engineer upon landing as I was traveling alone and was about 9 yeas old. I was hooked on planes from that day forward. Nothing like that today would happen in a cockpit allowing anyone to have that experience. Love love aviation and larger aircraft. Miss 747's Queen of the Skies greatly. Will be heading to France from LAX to CDG to NCE for a two month stay later this year. Will be flying Air France 777-300ER into CDG and most likely an Airbus A321 into NCE. May I also suggest for nervous flyers to sit in isle seat or near emergency exit. Trust, the flight crew are more than qualified to evacuate a plane quickly, no matter the size of plane if all passengers follow rules, just try to stay calm. Leave all your stuff behind, it's replaceable. Just slip your phone/passport into your pocket. Do not take any type of sedative as this can be a disaster if you pass out before you depart and that will obviously ruin that day of travel for sure. I witnessed this first hand years back as someone on my flight took something that did not agree with them and had to be carried off plane. Not sure what became of the person. Don't drink too much either. Elevation of 35,000 feet one may feel the effects of alcohol very different than when on land, just look at some youTube videos of drunk passengers, not pretty. Wear comfortable clothes and leave jewelry, high heels, etc. at home or in your luggage, and packing light will greatly improve stress levels to a minimum upon arrival for your trip going through security. I always arrive for domestic flights 3 hours ahead and will eat, grab a drink, watch the planes land and depart, and people watch. International flights I arrive 5 hours early, clear security. I will then treat myself and whoever I'm traveling with a nice afternoon lunch in one of the upscale restaurants. I like to sit near the wings so I can see the plane is configured for take off and landing. There are many redundencies in the cockpit to alert pilots if something is not configured correctly, but it just give me peace of mind when I travel. I also check flight status before leaving my home to make sure if there's any gate change or flight delays. Most times airlines will contact you via text or email, but just check before ordering your Uber or other means of travel to airport. Another tip I have found that works for me is I travel with 1 backpack for all my personal stuff, laptop, phone, passport and medications and 1 carryon with clothes, that's it. Makes it sooo much easier. Also rolling your clothes up into the shape of small logs greatly improves getting more into your bag. If you forget something at home, you can always buy upon arrival at local stores, remember this is 2022, not 1912. I also prefer departing from LAX in mid afternoon to arrive around 10 am into Europe this way you stay awake and can help with jet lag. I try to sleep on flights and I always say I don't but my travel buds remind me of my snoring. Premium economy is another huge benefit on long flights, a must for me now. Happy Travels. Global Entry another huge benefit for the cost.

This helped me.....I actually started taking flying lessons in a small Cessna. The great thing about that was that if I had enough, I could tell my instructor, let's go in. So I felt in control. The other thing is that it helped desensitize a little from the bumps. And then knowing how planes fly made me feel better. I'm back to being scared so I'm planning some flight lessons again this summer. There should be an airline devoted to terrified passengers and then I bet everyone would really feel comfortable.

Thank you for this video. I've been nervous to fly since my early 20's. While I do not let my fear keep me from traveling, I find it difficult to look forward to an upcoming trip until my feet are on the ground. I'll remember your tips and the recent smooth travel on my next trip.

I am considering canceling my 18hr flight to New Zealand. I used to love flying and traveling as a kid. It never bothered me. After on bad experience I can no longer sleep or remain totally calm on planes. I'm always on edge and it sucks. I hate it. My fear is based on the turbulence. The shaking is relatively fine but any sudden drops or dives that lead to loss of altitude that can be felt and comes without warning scares the hell out of me. I realize planes like a Dreamliner or Airbus A380 are damn stable planes since they're built for long distance travel. Yet the more time that goes by the greater this fear becomes and the more I fear that I'll completely give up air travel all together. Hell if I could he knocked out the entire flight I'd love that. If anyone has a similar fear can you mention anything that helps you? I live to travel and realize 95% of the actual "in air" time is calm and fine. Yet this fear cripples me and no matter the flight I no longer enjoy the travel. I'm anxious from before boarding and the sigh of relief from touching down again is euphoric.

My weird tips; play Mercy Me by Marvin Gaye on noise cancelling headphones....so soothing. When you hit turbulence, close your eyes and imagine you are on a horse just riding across a beautiful landscape in the west. For claustrophobia, picture the opposite....being abandoned by yourself on the loneliest place on earth with no one to count on, no food and freezing cold. You will appreciate having close company. If you are flying on a 3 hour flight, it is nothing compared to being on a 15 hour flight. Lastly, picture yourself walking off the plane excited to visit the place you "risked your life" to get to:-) If all else fails, go to your MD and just ask for Xanax (but this limits the option to drink alcohol). Take the Xanax the night before the flight then periodically to prevent the anxiety from building.

I work at an international airport in Scotland and not a keen flyer and know a lot if British Airways pilots who fly long haul and 1 of them telling me that the worst thing that ever happened to him flying from Dubai to Heathrow in what he described as the worst turbulence he had ever flown in in his 20 plus career, was when he spilt coffee down his shirt and told me that that's the worst thing that will happen if ur flight hits really bad turbulence, the plane will still fly safely but becomes an inconvenience when ur trying to drink lol

Not scared of flying, flew combat missions in Vietnam as a UH-1 D/H crew chief but next week we're getting on an Air Canada 737 Max 8 Van BC to Honolulu and very nervous about that. It is March 2024 and all the Boeing issues are very unsettling especially concerning the 737 Max aircraft! What advice might you have re my nervousness? Mahalo

Couple of things to try to help you😊 My Dad was a dust off medic in Vietnam and he gets on any max and just falls asleep. He is more afraid of COVID than he is of the Boeing max. I also, just had to fly both the max 8 and 9 to visit him in February. It was nerve wracking getting on them both for me. What got me through was that these airplanes are being so scrutinized by everyone right now right now that the mechanics and pilots must be on heightened alert, checking and double checking everything they can to make sure that they’re flying safely. Enjoy the trip to Hawaii it will be beautiful ☺️

I want to tell you how much I appreciate your you tube videos on flying. I am lucky enough at 67 yrs old to be able to travel with my daughter and her family, something I never dreamed I could do at my age. we will be flying to Hawaii this fall and I will listen to your soothing voice over and over again telling me that everything will be fine and there’s no reason to worry. Thank you for this! I’m able to build memories with my grandkids every time I step foot thru a plane door

I have done all these things and my fear is as bad as it's ever been. So I have come up with a plan to not only curb my fear of flying but to also help with my fear of heights. In April I am going skydiving for the first time. If that doesn't help nothing will. Lol

I agree with all the recommendations that you have made to help ease nervous flyers. However, I don't agree with the one about talk to the person next to you. I've been that person next to them and really didn't appreciate the talkers. I once had a united flight from D.C. to Tokyo (14 hours) and the person next to me barely shut his mouth for that entire time. Even when I had my noise cancelling earphone in, he continued to talk but just louder. This isn't a guy that the crew kept serving alcohol to. I don't think I ever saw him drinking anything other than juice or water but he continued to babble the entire flight. When I'm on a trip, I want to be left alone. A question or request every now and again is expected but I'm not a therapist and don't feel inclined to help others deal with their hangups. I'm just a passenger who has paid for his ticket and wants to get from point A to point B. A plane trip isn't a social occasion for me. So, I'm worried about that particular recommendation. However, they are all practical things for nervous passengers.

Yeah, I’m sympathetic but I can’t talk to ANYONE under ANY circumstances for 14 hours without getting a crushing headache.

But I know a few hours after watching it I will be back to being my scared old self. I really don't think there is anybody as scared as me . It's awful because you miss out on such a lot ... 🙏🙏🙏

Have a flight in a couple of days. Hopefully this helps cause last time I got out of my seat; went back took the flight. Then on connection took a car back home. I will over come this fear. I love planes the engineering that goes into them, and the sound of the engines. But irrational me is “ I am going to die, or be blown up.”

Nice video!!! 👍 Years ago I saw a "Far Side" cartoon that showed the Pilots of a big airliner leaning into an uphill climb while wearing parachutes, as they walked up the isle towards the rear of the plane as they reassured their passengers by telling them "Dont worry folks, we're going for help". Your video does a much better job of reassuring flyers!
