Are you an EV owner looking to plan an epic road trip? This Tesla Model 3 owner took his car on a cross-country excursion and picked up a few EV tips and tricks along the way. Here’s some of the gear he used and the advice he has for mapping out routes and avoiding range anxiety during your journey.
Superchargers. For Tesla owners, the Supercharger network is built directly into your vehicle’s GPS, so you can map out your routes knowing where each Supercharger station is located throughout your route. By mapping out your entire trip, you can spread out your charges and ensure you have plenty of battery when you arrive at your final destination.
Destination charging. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, find a charging station where you can park your vehicle overnight for a full or nearly full charge. These types of chargers are typically what you’ll find in national parks, but you’ll always want to check with the park before assuming a charging station is there. Use apps like PlugShare or ChargePoint to locate chargers at your destination. Google is also a great resource for locating charging stations.
Campground charging. As long as the campground permits, you can use an RV power pedestal to charge your EV with an appropriate adapter. This will be similar to charging your vehicle at a Level 2 charging station.
Camp mode. Tesla owners can activate “camp mode” in their vehicles for rest stops and car camping. In this mode, you can still use your vehicle’s lighting, heating, and cooling; charge devices; and even watch a movie on your display screen. This mode does disable features like your alarm system and auto lock, so be sure to lock your doors before going to sleep. You will need more than a 15 percent battery charge to activate camp mode, and you can expect it to use anywhere from 10 to 50 percent of your charge, depending on how much heat or air you need.
