My grandmother made me a brick-colored corduroy pinafore with a cute appliqué leading from the pocket when I was a toddler. I remember wearing it and loving how soft and cushy it felt. I'd love to recreate a more grownup-looking version. 🤗

As someone who has a similar garment (the cleo dungaree dress) I am all in favour for a more grown up version! 😄Also love the sound of brick coloured corduroy!

There are many issues that I have with corduroy. 1. It does not store well. Please wash it first (before cutting and making something from it). 2. It makes a loud sound when rubbed together (which is bad news for anyone knock-kneed wearsing corduroy pants). That's the reason corduroy pants are sometimes called "Whistle Britches." I'm knocked-kneed. 3. The pile will wear off where it rubbs against itself or something else. However, the most beautiful bed quilt I have ever seen was made out of many different bright colored squares of corduroy.

Whistle Britches! 🌬 I didn't know that, thank for you sharing! The sound does not bug me too much, but I am also not knock-kneed. Maybe it would annoy me if I was. I cannot believe I missed mentioning washing the fabric 🙈 I guess in my head it was so obvious, but it's even more important with corduroy as you can not steam press in the same manner as other cotton fabrics. The pile rubbing off is another very good thing to bear in mind when designing corduroy garments. Depending on the garments it's worth considering design details like elbow patches, knee patches, and/or extra strengthening in between the thighs. Also that bed quilt sounds gorgeous! 😍

made a pair of corduroy trousers in an internship at a bespoke tailor in january and february. very thick low wale corduroy in black, with a slight stretch to it. relaxed fit, a lot of cargo pockets, including big bellow pockets in the thighs. in the atelier we used to iron corduroy just normally, and the master tailor also irons his corduroy pants. at least with the thicker stuff, the pile just re-sets itself after a while and especially when you wash the garment. that is good, as ironing the seams flat and using iron-on interfacing (even with an applied industrial heat press) did not do any long lasting harm on the pile. then again, of course there might be fabrics that are more sensitive to the ironing methods. Personally, I love the look of corduroy, and the feeling hen I am brushing my hand against the pile, so I prefer to use it in the "up" direction. As always, thats a matter of personal taste, there is no right or wrong in design choices. Have two pieces of high wale cprduroy here, one in black and one in burgundy. will make at least one pair of trousers, and maybe a shirt out of them, not yet decided. I self draft all my patterns so everything is possible.

Thank you for sharing! 🤩 I have actually always pressed my corduroy without any problems, but because I had heard so many horror stories both IRL and online I decided to advise against it (just in case). I think the quality might play a role as well as pressure, temperature & steam/no steam etc. Also, I love a corduroy in burgundy! 😍 I was debating for a while if I was gonna go for that colour for my trousers or the spruce green which I went for in the end. You will have to report back when you made up your mind! 😁
@SewMuchBlack
@SewMuchBlack 2 года назад
@@missmatti Yes, of course, fabrics differ a LOT in quality. The more you know, the more experience you have, you can differentiate between the different materials. Will be a while until I use the burgundy corduroy, as I am focusing on both my bachelors thesis and fullfilling some custom orders (belts and garments) at the moment. The Instagram link in your profile doesnt work, do you still have an IG account?

I'm only hemming some corduroy pants, but as they are bootcut, it is turning out to be tricky. Any tips for me please?
@missmatti
@missmatti 9 месяцев назад
Yes, hemming boot cut trousers can be tricky! What I would do to make it easier is to make a straight stitch on each side from where you will fold the hem to the raw edge. This reduces exceeds fabric and prevents puckering. Hope this helps!

What kind of interface can we use for sewing a suit jacket?
@missmatti
@missmatti 6 месяцев назад
Lightweight hair canvas (cut on the bias) is a popular choice if you want a long lasting interfacing. There are heavier weight interfacings you can use also if you want a more structured look - but I think a lighter weight will look better with corduroy.

Really useful tips as I'm about to make a special waistcoat for my dad. Do I need to cut extra seam allowance for bulk, eg when folding or pressing? 😊
@missmatti
@missmatti 11 месяцев назад
Sorry for the late response! I would say it depends on how wide the seam allowance in your pattern is. I would definitely go for more like a 1,5 cm seam allowance in a bulky corduroy waistcoat rather than a 0,5-1 cm seam allowance. I hope it helps! 😊

How would you go about mending corduroy? I have a beautiful pair of wide leg organic cotton corduroy trousers with a low whale count that have worn thin between the thighs. There aren’t any holes yet as I haven’t worn them since I realised the thinning fabric. I was thinking of an ironing patch but don’t want to ruin the whales and wouldn’t love the poly cotton on organic cotton either. And darning would possibly do the same to the whales. Would love to hear your suggestions as I haven’t found much info on this at all! (: thanks (:
@missmatti
@missmatti 2 года назад
Great question! The short answer is that you can mend corduroy like you mend denim. I have a video on a couple of different ways that you can mend jeans both by hand and machine. However some of those methods might not create the look you desire. This is what I would consider: I would maybe put a patch on the back of the thinning area and make running stitches on top in a way that looks pleasing with the whales of your corduroy (one of the techniques I share in that video). Alternatively, I would look at embroidery stitches that could re-create the look of the wales or create a texture that works with the wales. The other method I would consider if you had a bigger hole not just thinning fabric is that if I have corduroy in the same weight and color is to cut out a patch that I insert into the fabric where the hole is. I hope this helps!

I'm a beginner who is planning on sewing a denim style jacket (Simplicity S8845) using white featherweight STRETCH corduroy. Are your sewing tips for corduroy the same for sewing with stretch corduroy?
@missmatti
@missmatti 2 года назад
In general yes but as you are using a light weight and stretch corduroy I might consider a thinner sewing machine needle than if I was sewing in a more heavy weight corduroy without stretch. Also looked up the pattern and it seems perfect to make a denim style jacket in corduroy out of!
@TaDarling1
@TaDarling1 2 года назад
@@missmatti Awesome. Thank you. Is it okay to use a straight stitch with stretch corduroy or should I go with a zig zag which is typical for stretch fabrics?
@missmatti
@missmatti 2 года назад
It depends on how much stretch you have. I think if it’s just a little bit you can be fine with straight stitch especially in a denim style jacket that’s not right fitting like a bodycon dress for example. Hope that helps!

I just cut out fabric to make a toile for this same pattern. I have a dark teal corduroy planned for the real version. Have you made it yet?
@TaDarling1
@TaDarling1 Год назад
@@KailuaChick I actually switched directions and made the jacket in a cotton blend. The pattern requires a lot of ironing of various pattern pieces as you sew (so that things lay flat) and I was very concerned about ruining the corduroy fabric if I iron it. It's my own fault for buying such expensive stretch corduroy fabric and then being afraid to use it. Would love to know how your garment turns out!

will a pair of corduroy pants fray or something if i cut them but don't sew the hem? i don't know how to sew 😭

Yes, corduroy is notorious for fraying A LOT. If you don’t sew I would bring the pants to a tailor to get them hemmed ❤️

Please answer I am making some overalls using corduroy can I apply paint screen prints or vinyl to the fabric?!!!
@missmatti
@missmatti 2 года назад
I think you can! At least I know you can apply iron-on vinyl (but be careful with how you heat press it on). I have never tried to screen print corduroy. I think a thin wale corduroy would have the best chance of success. I would try on a scrap piece of fabric before I try it on the overalls.

What size needle do you recommend for medium weight?
@missmatti

I would recommend using a universal needle. I used the 120/705 H or 80/12 weight needle when I made my corduroy trousers.
