Tips for the 2022 NYC Marathon

The NYC lottery is unfortunately so tough. It's what kicked off my first ultra, I could not get into the Marathon via the lottery for a couple years.

I really would not Uber or drive. Even the busses for the marathon get really backed up. You could get stuck dropped off really far away if things don’t work perfectly. You can still choose a transport option at guest services at the expo and I would always choose that myself. Usually you can bring a guest with you, this year on NYRR, “The expo is open to the general public”.

Good to know! Only reason why I don’t want to choose transportation is because I live 15 min from the start line in Brooklyn. May consider taking my chances and just arriving super early. Thank you!

There are A LOT of tips out there for first timers, so I wanted to focus mainly on NYC and the struggles many won't think of even if they have run before. My main things for a first timer in NY or to marathon running overall, don't go out too fast, especially on the big NY uphill right out of the gate, you won't notice it but it will beat you up later if you go out fast. Wear clothes you know don't chafe you up on your long runs and work well for hours of running. Same with shoes, wear what you know works well from prior racing or try the shoes a bit beforehand, I like to do maybe 1 longer run or a threshold/Marathon effort. Practice the fuel you will use, so you know your stomach isn't upset, and also know your stomach, don't take fruits or other other foods from spectators unless you know it doesn't make you "go", to the bathroom. Personal choice, no music, NYC has you covered. Feed off the energy of the crowds and city. Plan your way out of the marathon finish area beforehand, family meet ups, walking routes, subways, it can be congested and chaotic post race, especially if you finish earlier and the course is still closed to more racers. Don't take the first too seriously unless you're a veteran of racing 10ks and Half Marathons, otherwise enjoy the run, be conservative and leave room for a fun faster finish, and set a few goals for yourself so there is always something to push towards if the first goals come undone. Do not bring a hydration backpack, I've seen those stopped before. I think that's really the only running related item I've really seen be an issue, but obviously no weapons or anything remotely dangerous as well.

@@ChristianRunsNY yeah it’s the max my high school does in our races but I’m very slow I come in around 29 minutes 😭 (mostly because we mainly race on days where it’s raining and it’s cold!)
