Like you told in the last minute, you are without doubt the greatest documentary video maker about Japan ever. Even major foreign tv broadcaster or famous foreign filmmakers could never have catch even any sight of your backs in the marathon race in making documentaries in Japan. They just follow boring stereotypes foreigners have about Japan and even when they digged deep, but they ended up in swimming in a pool of 5 cm depth. I am sure that living in the residental hood in Kichijoji, brought you the ordinary Japanese lives including foods. 1/3 of Tokyo ant the the other 1/3 of Tokyo are Musashino area and Tama area. Unless you do not know these two areas for living , you would not come to know Tokyo. Shinjuku, Harajuku or Akihabara do not represent it. Simon and Martina’s videos are the closest ever online to the real Japanese food lifestyles. To those who plan to come to Japan. Most of Japan trip videos on youtube go to the same restaurants. Instead, do as Simon and Martina are advising here!!
I love you guys so much, Martina you have helped me so much with my journey of chronic pain and chronic fatigue, Simon you have made me laugh on my hardest days and both of you are some of the most important idols I’ve ever had
Yeah watching some of the videos on Martina's struggles have made me push to get my own sorted out. Been living with a dislocating knee for 10 years now
S Quu Yes I actually lived in China for awhile and I was gonna put a caveat for there. It’s rush the line and see who comes out on top 😂😂 Every man for himself
Could you guys please do a video of some basic food ordering and phrases when dining out, as well as a general how to when navigating small mom and pop restaurants? I’m secretly afraid to enter smaller establishments for fear of being out of place, not knowing how to navigate some of these smaller spots when it comes to when to order and settle up because of my remedial grasp on speaking Japanese!
We're gonna tell you some tips on how to eat well in Japan. Where do you go, how do you find it, what time should you go. And we're gonna be talking about some sushi rules as well!
Ahhhh this video has alot of stuff from previous videos and podcast episodes and I am here for it!! The explanation on tablelog is something that I've been wanting ever since the old sbs popasia podcast. Keep up the great work!
A couple of myths there I've not heard of. That turning your sushi upside down so the fish touches your tongue first, is a real doozie... probably the most ridiculous myth I've heard so far!
I hadn’t heard that one either, but I bet it’s an offshoot of “you must dip the fish side down in the soy sauce” rule I have heard many times. I could never make it happen with chopsticks...
Can't blame them, it's heavenly and I still thank them every single day for recommending it. That's why I looked for it and tried it when I went to Japan. The only downside is that you end up missing it like crazy afterwards 😞 Still can't figure out how they eat level 10, though. That thing is like hellfire!
I'm from Minnesota (middle of the entire continent, nowhere near an ocean) and have never been to Japan, but I'm a sucker for sushi! Every time I'm brave and try a new "scary-sounding" fish, I find a new favorite 😍
The best would be a sushi place in Nevada that our Japanese teacher took us to as part of our midterm. We had to order in Japanese it was a fun class and the resturant was run by a very large Japanese family.
Hello Simon and Martina! I’m a Korean student living in America. I recently found out about the boycott against Japanese products in Korea. I really want to hear your guy’s opinions about it, and how people are reacting to it in Japan. Thank you for always uploading wonderful, informational videos for your viewers!
You guys are our fave youtuber for Japan, love the depth of knowledge and we always learn something new everytime we watch your video. The tips about checking out the opening/break hours is really useful. Traveled far to get karage fix to stumbled upon their break time LOL..
Number one tip: Trust your other senses. If it smells good, there' a reason If it sounds like people are enjoying themselves in there, there's a reason If the food looks good, and your guts tells you this is the place, there's a reason.
I can't believe it's been 3 years!!! Where has that time gone?! I've just booked my first visit to Japan next year, I can't wait 😍 so excited to get planning my trip - this video came at the perfect time 💛
It's been 3 years already???? That's amazing y'all. And i've never been this early to a video either! Y'all are incredible and i hope you're having a good day/night 😀😀
I get nervous leaving comments on videos, but you guys have gotten me through some tough times. You guys always make me smile. I learned about Korea and Korean cuisine and now...I get to learn about Japan. 😍Watching your videos give me such warmth and positivity. Thank you :)
On Saturday my simon (and martina) sense was tingling and I saw Safiya was in Japan. I got so excited hoping you would be on the video and sadly it was only a click from one of your videos. That being said, this helped feed the need for my hipster foodies indeed, soorry had to do it. Anyway, glad you see you two out and about and that Martina is doing well and looking freaking KAWAII!!! 😸😻😻
Thank you for the tabelog recommendation, will have to check it out on my next visit. Hope you’re both well, was nice catching up with Martina on dan’s music sesh
Japan has been on my bucketlist since I was a child and finally at the age of 30 my husband and I booked tickets to go visit next April. YASSSSSS. This video.. it's a sign 💗
Opening hours are very similar in Germany, actually. I never thought it was particularly weird but I've also had situations where I really wanted to eat something outside of usual lunch and dinner hours but everything was closed...
When I went to study abroad in Seoul two years ago, your videos were like my Bible for food to try. I hope to go to Japan one day too and use your videos again as a guide!
You guys are so much fun. On point about many things. The get in the line thing, weird business hour thing, flipping the sushi thing... Watching you both giggling and having fun makes me smile.
I second the part about asking people what’s good. The best food\experiences I’ve had in Japan are places that my friends and coworkers have taken me too. Just went to a great ramen place in Kyoto for dinner tonight actually!
I love Simon and Martina’s fan base (Nastys) so much! It’s nothing but good wholesome love!!! Simon and Martina are wonderful parents, I mean, look at all the nastys showing their unconditional love and support and care!!!! I’ve been going on a Simon and Martina RU-vid spree and I just cannot express how much love I have for you guys. I’ve been following you since the beginning of Music Monday’s and have never been so committed to a channel unlike you guys ❤️
That was so fun and so much the information! Your videos have that “hang out quality”. Definitely trust our favorite Canadian RU-vidrs over Hollyweird any day!
Y'all have put me in such a good mood on a crappy sick day. Thanks for busting down myths, encouraging foreigners to visit Japan and feel comfortable, and to eat some delicious food!
I’m sure a ton of people have said this before but I always look forward to your videos! In the time it takes to watch a video it seems like nothing else is going on in the world except the video, my stress and anxiety disappears, It always feels like I’m there with y’all and not watching a video. Keep up the great work!!! ❤️❤️
I love that you went in with this plan when you came to Japan. You said from the start that you wouldn’t speak with authority on life in Japan until you did your time. And here you are three years and change later, takin us to SCHOOL
1. Never underestimate the power of convenience store onigiri- that's some good shizzle right there! 2. As was said, set menu (especially at lunch) is the way forward. Generally very reasonably priced but you'll be stuffed. 3. In summer, find 麦茶 (mugi cha / barley tea). Most refreshing cold beverage (one of the things I'm most excited about going back to Japan this summer). 4. In train stations or shopping centres, head to the top floor, there's LOADS of generally very decent restaurants up there 5. Just do it- go in, even if you have no idea what it is. Chances are it's going to be fab. 6. All you can eat is called "Viking". Why? Not sure.
+1 for talking to the locals. My friends and I were visiting Japan last October, and one of the best experiences we had was when we had a chat with an older couple sitting next to us at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. They were very friendly, and even bought my brother a drink.
I wish every country had it’s own simon and martina. You guys are like the best travel guide book ever.Endearingly dorky couple with great sense of humour. You’ve got it all :) I’ve learned so much about eastern culture because of you even tough i live in an eastern country. Please keep making videos as long as possible.
Eating out in Japan can be expensive, so when I first lived in Tokyo making peanuts I LIVED for the lunch set. Generally, a ton of food for 1000-1500. That would keep me pretty full so I could eat at the konbini for dinner 🤣 Can't wait to go back to Japan now that I eat meat and make decent money.
I’ve been watching this channel for almost 10 years and I absolutely love every video. Extremely entertaining and fun to watch. Every video puts a smile on my face
* add this video in the playlist "food guide to japan * i looooooove when you talk about food, so much passion! P. S. Martina, lookin' good GIIIIIRL *snap snap* P. P. S. I died for the coco curry transition and the screaming child 🤣🤣
this video looks amazing! I feel like the quality has gone up so much even though I didnt think it could get better. the pacing is easy to follow and it flows so well. also Martina looks stunning. I remember her talking about focusing on her health and it really seems to be paying off. she is radiating :)
Everytime I watch an EYK video I have to make sure to 1. Auto like before watching 2. Make sure to watch the whole ad 3. Then push thru with another f up ad 4. Finally enjoy the video!!! Unless there's another surprise ad/s, I then pull a chunk of my hair, then watch the whole ad/s... Finaly I LOL while watching real video. PS 8 ads?! RU-vid is getting ridiculous
You two... just make me smile every time that I watch you both. Thank you for brightening my day - Also, I never flip my sushi now... I was told I should by the person that introduced me to sushi... and I thought it was dumb, so I've never done it since. Good to know I wasn't crazy!
Yey Simon and Martina - like previous commentators have said thank you for helping me focus on getting out of my own head and out of the house! Love how accepting you guys are and the joy you get out of the little things!
You guys are the reason why I want to visit Japan and Korea! I've been watching your videos since 2015 and I'm dying to travel to Japan & Korea just to eat the yummy food!
"We take this S**t seriously! " would not have it any other way. =) Love you guys so much. Thank you for everything you do. Also where did you get these rad heartshaped sunglasses Martina ;-)
I really watched every video of you and always when I have to stay at home because I'm sick your videos are on repeat! Even tough I already know all of your videos I will still watch them over and over again. Last week I got a surgery and I have to stay at home for 2 weeks and this new video makes me like the most happy person in the world right now! I love you soooo much 😭💕 you guys are really my favorite youtubers 💕
Martina, I love your hipster romper! Floral with a black background is absolutely my favorite. Also, I want a picture of you in the 'Rosie the riveter' pose! I will definitely refer back to this video when I can actually afford to visit Japan, thank you for making my day with this video.
It’s so weird. I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed you guys, I’ve been so busy with life and haven’t had a lot of time to watch YT and this was one of the first things that popped up. Looks like I’m about to binge your videos 😂
Lord knows anytime I am feeling down/depressed I can be sure to turn on your guy's RU-vid channel and drool over the foods and just things you do (side note so jelly you went to sailor moon cafe) but needless to say I can always count on you both to help turn a negative day to a happier hungrier day lol thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for all you do. Love you guys plz keep what you are doing it is people like you that make this world amazballs
I’m soooo jealous. Idk why but I am so drawn to Japanese cuisine. Like my body thinks that’s all I should be eating lol. Of course I live on the other side of the planet 😂 Traveling isn’t going to happen these days and I love where I live but damn I want that Japanese food again (and forever)
The flip of the sushi, I learned from a Japanese tv-show, where they asked 10 top sushi chefs in japan, 8 of 10 where flipping them, and they explained that it is a traditional way to eat sushi, but it doesn't matter which way your'e eating it, and with your hands, and only dip a part of the fish in the soy, they also told that it's more modern to eat it with chopsticks, and that's ok. Sushi started out as a cheap street food you eat with your fingers, but has since then become a bit more fancy, and also eaten with chopsticks. I've seen many videos where Japanese people have used their fingers, and both is ok, unless your'e at a slightly more fancy restaurant. But I still love your'e videos, keep up the good work!
This was so fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your advice and resources with us. Will definitely revisit this video the next time I visit Japan again. Cheers!
Hey Simon & Martina. When you were pointing at 3:56, that's the shift hours for part timers. And above that notice is for full-time staff employment. XD Love you guys! Also if you haven't, you should totally noms at Menya Musashi. They serve totally bomb af tsukemen. ;w;
I love watching all your videos. I usually rewatch them many times randomly through the week to help me when I’m at my lowest. Lots of love from Okinawa.
YAY! I'm never this early! I had an awful pain night where I just could not sleep, but I finally got an hour or two in because I was able to drift off in the early morning while listening to your podcasts on repeat. Thanks for everything you do, guise!!
My class and I visited japan last spring! I managed to spot a coco curry and convince them that it would be their best meal in their entire life. IT WAS AMAZING!! Big win for me and my class. Thanks a bunch!
Great Tips Simon and Martina everytime I watch your videos I'm always hungry afterwards, If I ever get to go to Japan some day I'll know what great places to visit because of ya videos love ya shirt and Hair Martina you look fab 🤗✌💖
As an American, I approve of your message, Simon and Martina! 😂😂😂😂 I have see the documentary and while I love it, I know better than to think he is the best. I look forward to trying as many goodies as I can when I do travel to Japan.
I just have to say that I started showing your Japan videos to my boyfriend and he really enjoys your content! It doesn't seem like a big deal, but he's put off by probably 90% of channels here on youtube because they kind of lean on the obnoxious side without providing much content. You both provide seriously S+ grade content :) . You're like the A5 Beef of youtube
Also a myth that I've heard of: Slurping noodles is a sign that you enjoy the food (or something like that) You don't have to slurp your noodles, people tend to slurp just to cool them down/ it's an efficient way to eat. Burping is a sign to the chef that you enjoyed the food. No, it's not. It's a burp...
