I give you the ABC's of spoon fishing, both the weedless spoon and the jigging spoon! These two spoons are 100% different from each other! These are old school lures but now I give them several new school additions!
It's quite clear to me that Roland , while in m y opinion is the best television host, where they want fish catches for their audience, actually excels just as much with this sharing, teaching, tutorials on bass fishing . Thanks Roland!
My favorite lure. But all these young guys look at me funny and smile when they see me use it. And even try to tell me hey you know theres more modern lures now days. But the smiles drop when they see the bass I catch with that old timers lure and I love it.
Roland, my Mom caught a 9.9lb large mouth on A silver #7 Johnson spoon. With a pork rine trailer. On little lake george in a eal grass bed. In 1967. I still have the mount hagging in my house. Mom always out fished us all.
Been watching you since I was a kid on Saturday mornings , was a standard ritual before heading to the farm pond & still enjoy it now , keep em coming ,
Roland you're going to have to go through some of your fly jigs your friend gave you that deal on. Thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the 100+ year old gold plated Johnson spoon.
I watched you wade fishing on Occachobee throwing the gold Johnson spoon. Guess it was 45 years ago. Catching really big bass it was amazing. Thanks for then and thanks for today.
First time I've heard you mention Chicamauga. My lake. You were here this year and you didn't tell me. Your a big reason my fishing has improved 10 fold.
Man, I just love your videos. Thanks for keeping them coming. Use to watch you as a kid on TV on the old Outdoor Channel. So awesome to see these videos now.
I used to use a black plastic version of the Johnson spoon. Amazed me that a large mouth would just pick it up off the bottom. Bass must suck in anything and everything off the bottom.
Those bass chasing those sexy small skirted fish, are such predators. They deserve to be captured and then confined at your local pond so they are removed from the population LOL . We love your videos and learning from you Roland! Awesomus Maximus!
Thank you so much for teaching me how to use a spoon. I have tried blue and white, silver, gold,, but have had no success because I didn't know what I was doing. Your advice will be implemented in my first fishing opportunity. I enjoy all your videos. Thank.
Where is O’Larry Nixon nowadays? Fishing Texoma Mill Creek at the big rock. I pulled up Larry Nixon‘s bass fishing pole. The rule was completely shot, but the pole had a possibilities. I got the pole fixed it all back up. It looked absolutely beautiful took it out to the lake and it broke. yes these big spoons are catching on. Thanks and you’re right. I’ll keep
Cant wait to try the worm trick, I can almost guarantee my fishery isn’t used to seeing that, Unless it’s what those old timers are always getting hammered with... they won’t tell me
OH BOY IM ALREADY READY FOR SOME OF THAT. I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE HEARD AND SAW THIS VIDEO .GONNA TRY THIS AND GONNA LET YOU KNOW HOW I DID REALLY LIKED .CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM ROLAND MARTIN. GOOD LUCK.
I remember Roland Martin raving about this spoon about 27 years ago on his Roland Martin fishing show. I can't find this spoon anywhere other than Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop, which is an hour drive on the highway away from home.
Used to use a Silver Minnow with a white pork strip to tear them up in farm ponds back in the seventies. Usually on a Sunday afternoon after watching Mr. Martin and Bill Dance on the weekly shows. Been playing with the Hopkins style for spillway fishing lately cause you can sling it way out there and the stripes and whites are hot for shad imitations. Even got a few hits from Spanish in Santa Rosa sound this summer. Going to pick up a few Silver Minnows next trip to Wally World and give them a try with a skirt. Great Post Sir!
I've had a Johnson Silver Minnow in my tacklebox for years, can't remember ever using it... I just ordered 5 more in varying sizes and colors, along with a variety of trailers. Can't wait to go play with them!
I have caught more fish on a Johnson spoon than I have on sweet corn! Yellow perch, crappie, bass, you name it. I always keep one tied on.... granted, I use one smaller than a #2, but they are fish catching sons of guns!
Hi Roland, Enjoyed your presentation on spoons in fact I have in my tackle box a Johnson spoon that was my Dad's from the late 1940s. We used to use Pork Rind on the hook. I also have a couple red and white Daredevil Spoons. Do you ever use the Daredevil spoon. I just like looking at the old lures and remembering!! I enjoy your shows! Roy PS. I was also a HS teacher - taught Industrial Arts and loved it! Later.
Spoons they’ve worked as long as I can remember. I got spoons from my grandfather’s tackle box that where made in the 1940s and 50s. He used to says this spoon has been catching fishermen for a long time.
I'm a teacher too and enjoy learning from you. Thanks! I have a few 8th grade students that I share some fish producing lures and baits with. They come back to school and show me what they caught. :-)
I've been using a Johnson spoon with a worm on it for 20 years sometimes if I can find them large eyed weedless hook with a larger worm on it works real well
Great program !!!! I have purely technical question - tell me please about Hopkins Shorty S-1 spoon - it's always written her name (Hopkins Shorty S1) on the body spoon or in old years possibly that not written ???! Sorry for my English
One of my go to lures for redfish in shallow water is a weedless gold spoon. Some good tips on bottom bass or suspended stripers. A small split ring pliers works well to.
I have caught some very nice spotted bass up on Smithlake AL using jigging spoons in the colder months but that being said ,I have donated hundreds of dollars worth of spoons to the bottom of that lake also!!! The weedless johnson spoon is indeed a Great bass catcher that you hardly see anyone using nowadays, that spoon has also been responsible for taking many slot Redfish overhere in Tampa bay!!! I would have never thought about adding a skirt to it or maybe even a willow leaf blade . Thanks for sharing your precious tackle secrets with us! I love to listen to your stories about past fishing trips Mr. Martin. You are one of the best storytellers of all-time!!! "Set That Hook"
John silver minnow with a white tail grub, a#3 chartreuse blade/ brown tail algia mepps, and a shiner red hook on slipshot are the only 3 rigs my dad needs to catch fish. whenever I have a hard time catching fish I always try one of these methods and it always works.
My GrandDad used to tell me " Son if it caught Bass 50 years ago, it'll catch Bass today. I enjoy catching fish with old standbys and the Johnson spoon is one of my all time favorites.
I put split rings on all my spoons and top water lures, it allows them to move freely. In my opinion, tying directly to them kill much of their movement.
*Great item. First cast out of the package caught a nice bass. Pulls smooth in the water and sets up nicely immediately upon retrieval. Worth adding to your tackle box.*
Roland, great video. I haven't used a spoon in years but I do remember having a black spoon like the one you used a 5" worm on. Going to have to go to the barn where I have a couple old tackle boxes in the tack room and see if I still have any spoons. 🎣🐟
Roland, please use split ring pliers, you’re scaring me using that knife! Similar to the Hopkins, I use the Cordell CC spoon, they’re cheap from Wally World. Like you I replace the hooks and add a split ring. Most of the time I also add a tiny swivel, but not always. I even catch a lot of Crappies on the smaller ones and occasionally a big ole catfish. Great tip videos, keep them coming.
Roland I have tried to email this question before, never back from you. I fished against you at Millwood Reservoir Ark it was flooded when you caught the record tournament catch that took the record. Explain how you caught those bass when everyone was culling a lot just get one keeper. The next time you whipped the fire out of all the others was Westpoint Georgia jigging would to hear what creek with trees and type jig used? Thanks Lamar Fussell
That tournament at Millwood in Arkansas had floodwaters creating a lot of current just in front of the spillway. The closest patch of timber was absolutely full of monster bass and I was the only fisherman there . My 8 biggest that day weighed 45 pounds so at 1:00 I gave my partner my rod and reel and he caught 28 pounds along with the big bass of the tournament!
@@RolandMartinOutdoors Roland thanks for taking up your time to answer my question about Milwood in Ark. I was just back from two combat tours in Vietnam when I and my brother Harry Fussell traveled up to that tournament. You have no idea how many years I wondered how you caught those bass. I was the guy standing behind you at weighing. I am now 72yrs old. I was told you changed the size line to get below the schools of small bass. By the way, I won the World Championship Turkey calling 1984. That bird has been the one game animal no one has mastered. Anyways Neil Coat built two box call for me after World Contest and have two of his paddle box calls. I would to own one of your calls if your serious about building the paddle box. Also, I have known Lamar Williams before he learned make calls. But You (Roland) was always my favorite bass fishing champ. I have always read many articles and books from you. Your friend you never knew me. Lamar Fussell
I've been using smaller spoons for catfish bait like the Foley spoon. I'll have to pick up some bigger spoons for bass. By the way, I use a Santee Cooper rig on all my catfishing setups. That's one of the mecca's for big catfish
Back in October went fishing with and old guy couple of times. He gave me a spoon and told me how great they are. I would like to see how he fishes that Johnson spoon.
You know I have my brother in law's dad's tackle that's 70 years old and there's a lot of spoons brand new in the box going to use them is summer. Thanks for the tip 👍
I dig it! and I really am listening and openminded to learning new patterns, I enjoy your videos a lot. I don't fish fresh water for largmouth bass but saltwater for buoy bass AKA tripletail. Merry Christmas Roland
ROLAND... Why don't you contact Johnson and tell them to GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER , WITH QUALITY CONTROL" You have to cull through them in the store. Hooks are soldered on crooked, Solder gobbed on to much, front and back. The hook is way to thick and lousy quality. With todays modern equipment and a super inexperienced lazer, therecis no excuse for crooked hooks.
On my wife’s phone ROLAND you are the king and your son is a prince and your granddaughter is a princess that fishes with the zeal of a Martin l have watched her videos she is really good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm still waiting to see you hit a major tournament with a tennis ball on the butt of your rods,,like the elderly do with their walkers 😝 The news/sight of it (for better or for worse) would run through the angling world like wildfire. Probably even nab a a few thousand more subs in the process. I mean this with total love~it would be such a great "joke" IMO (in my opinion)
I used a spoon yesterday i missed 6 in ten mins. Honestly i set the hook but i was wrong. I couldnt believe the bass ran with it. I had a big spoon so I'm going to change to a smaller spoon.
You're a class act Roland. Love you brother. The hopkins and Johnson spoons are my favorite too. Also a red devil spoon worked well too in jersey. Where in from. Live in Punta Gorda now. Dont fish as much, due to health issues. Would love to come to Okeechobee one day. To meet and greet. Thank you Kenny.
Lifelong fan. I fish Kerr Lake, Falls, Jordan and Harris. I finally have time to fish, and I want to do it right. You are a great resource. Would love to see what you have to say about the NC piedmont lakes.
I was fishing my first B.A.S.S. tournament on Okeechobee in like 2002, and a friend of my dad's name captain Neal, on lake panasofkee, have me some of those rigged spoons
Roland, get a split ring pliers! Mine is made by Worth. I've changed hooks hundreds of times with it, and it works perfectly. Using a knife looks very unsafe. I love your videos!
Hi ROLAND Rick on my wife’s phone been following you since 1965 do you do a lot of old school videos this one on the Johnson silver spoon was great taught me a lot about spooning also a spoon l like is the Williams wolber half copper half silver also l just heard about using that black spoon with a blue trailer or grub that really sounds good to me black with sapphire blue have to try
I used a spoon today with a long skirt like that and the trout bit the tail several times following to the shore, but finally one couldn't take it anymore and took the whole treble.
Roland, couple questions what size hook do you use to replace on the Hopkins Spoon... 2nd what is the best weight Hopkins 75 spoon.. thanks great show Roland
What skirts work well? I tried spinnerbait skirts, they just slide down and ride loose in the bend of the hook, and end up pointing up. The band in them is made to grip the thicker spot up by the head of a spinnerbait. Even with one that gripped the hook well, the bend in the silver minnow hook begins just aft of the spoon and the skirt doesn't look like it would ride in-line with the spoon. What's the answer? Mr Martin is a National Treasure.
