Louis Sauzedde is building the Alden Schooner, Evelyn, with his friend Ken Boyle in Ken's Bristol Shipwrights shop. Lou explains how to ensure a strong connection of scarf joints that will last the lifetime of this wooden boat. Using both thickened and un-thickened TotalBoat High Performance Epoxy Resin, Lou joins the two pieces of Philippine mahogany that are this first layer of planking on the boat. Lou will epoxy between this layer of 5/8” strip planks and then cover them using 7/8” carvel planks on the top. Stay tuned here as we follow along and grab all the Sticky Tips to share with you as Lou builds Evelyn.
You can get clear, non-bushing TotalBoat High Performance Epoxy Resin and fillers at www.totalboat.com

I wonder how much moisture is ideal in the planks, does it matter if it is consistent over the duration of the build (winter to summer)?

wondering why he isnt beading and coving those planks with a router......traditional build?

All that epoxying -done twice no less because you have to use the thickened stuff the second time, on way too many planks because they are way too narrow to begin with because its strip planking versus carvel, and worst of all only the inner planking of a TWO layer planked boat. And to think that once upon a time boats were made leak proof with ONE layer of wider fewer planks and no epoxy.

Nonsense, over the years there has been thousands of boats built with narrow planks. It was also a method used on many high quality sailing and racing yachts as well as top end motor launches. You need to get your facts correct before criticising.

@@RonLaden No, I have my facts right. In fact I know more about strip planking than you do. Did you know that it was patented in Detroit in 1841? Hollow and round was patented in Boston around 1873. The fact that it is widely used does NOT make it it as wise a choice as wider carvel planking, glued or otherwise.
