Rubber Plants which are also known as Ficus Elastica are stunning plants plants that come in an abundant variety of colours and different varigation. These plants are native to India and South Asia. ( Opps, made mistake, they are not native to South America).
It can be frustrating situation when brown leaves occur, let's dive into some causes.
It's natural for older leaves to go brown as this is a natural cycle of leaves. A leaf will naturally go brown and fall off once it's performed its job of capturing and turning the sunlight into energy for the plant through a process called photosynthesis.
The lower leaves on the a plant tend to be the oldest leaves so they tend to become brown first. If you notice the young leaves especially at the top of the plant or multiple leaves going brown suddenly then this is a concern. Unfortunately once the leaf has gone brown it can't be reversed so best to do avoid this sad situation in the first place.
Brown edges on the leaves indicate the plant has been dry for far too long.
Can tell if there is Sun damage as the leaf tends to look Faded or slightly yellow in colour.
Multiple leaves go Black or brown patches all over the leaf not just the edges at once is a sure sure sign that overwatering has occurred. This leads to root rot and possible death of the plant. If a ficus is overwatered once in a while its a tough plant and probably will survive. If it's consistently overwatered this is a major problem.
Little brown spots on the leaves are caused by fungal disease. Ficus can be effected by a fungal disease called rust spots. This is often a situation where there is not enough air circulation. Using a fungalcide that kills the fungus and moving the plant to an air with air circulation will help.
Little brown spots that are slightly raised is a sign of scales which is a type of pest. Rubber Plants are suspectible to pest. Leave spots tend to occur more underneath the leaves and on the stems as they try to hide. When l see these pest l use cloth with some alcohol and go around scraping the leaves and stems to get rid of these scales. I repeat the treatment every week until they are gone. There are pesticides that contain petroleum but l dont tend to use these pesticides as l get disgusted with the funky smell of the pesticide and l don't want to hurt the environment by unintentionally killing beneficial insects like bees or lady bugs and if pesticides can burn the leaves if not used correctly.
Water impurities can cause crispy leaf browning especially on the tips of the leaves.
Sickly yellowy brown leaves is the reverse problem. That's more of indication of not enough nutrients.
Temperature changes can can cause brown leaves.
