Tips to DIY a Palette & Save Paint!
Resourses:
The gadget I used to get the paint out of the tubes is a tube wringer, Jerry's has them the cheapest. Don't bother with the paint saver keys. the one I have is similar to $5.99 model but if you can swing it I'd go with a metal one.
I did find a sourse of affordable empty half-pans and full pans, I just ordered 40 halfs and 30 fulls from Jacksons Art Supply on amazon and no matter how many you order (and you can combine half and full pans) it is just one shipping charge of $3.50 from UK to USA. I am not affilated with Jackson's or Amazon but it was the best deal I could find (26 cents half/39 cents full), here is a link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
The tin came with the Qor set of watercolors. I got a big tin with each set of 6 paints I ordered. They have switched to smaller tins for the small sets because artist complained buti like the big tins. You might ask where you order if you can get a set in a large tin if they still have them. currently Jerry's has the best price on these at $20.00 (which is a couple bucks less than what I paid sheesh!) www.jerrysartarama.com/qor-wat...
I got the magnets from Oriental Trading but there is noting specail about them, just look for a good price, I got 200 for $6 www.orientaltrading.com/self-a... or you could use rubber cement to tack down your pans but i wanted to be able to move the colors I wanted over to my mixing side so I did not get confused:) and also be ableto rearrange them.
I wrote the names on my pans with a ultra fine tip sharpie which I also use to do watercolor pen and ink with:)

Guys, I really have to suggest her. I haven't been good or experienced at watercolour be she is HANDS DOWN one of the best, or should i say my favourite out there. I have painted 3 of her tutorials and people actually have begun to become impressed with my art, and her tutorials are so lovely and helpful, I'm finally getting better, and creating works of art that are amazing. SO I TOTALLY. TOTALLY. should tell you she's worth subscribing to, and liking because she's so helpful and talented. honestly.

Hello Lindsay! The story of why the tins went from large to small is (sorry) not that interesting. It had more to do with suppliers than customer feedback - but we did try to improve the tin when we made the change. The smaller tin used for the 6 and 12 color sets is less than half the size of the original tin - HOWEVER, we now make a 24 color set that uses a tin that is exactly twice the size of the smaller tin (still, just a little smaller than the original large tin). So, if anyone is looking for a larger tin, the new 24 color set will have that - all the 6 and 12 color sets use the smaller tin. Thanks for giving QoR a try!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 лет назад
hahaha, that is so funny! I loved the large tin but I heard other artists on youtube complain about it and some said they send feedback to the company of the tins being to big so I figured that is why it changed:) I almost bought another intro set because I was at an art shop this weekend and they had 1 set in a big tin at a good price but I was frugal (and I am regretting it knowing that they are no longer making these tins!) I really like the Qor paints (esp Cobalt teal!) and I am glad I gave them a try! Thanks for leaving a comment and setting me strait:)

mlaiuppa That’s a good tip...I am forever losing tops/lids...anything, so having things attached is usually a good idea...except where the hinge hampers for some reason (like if you want the lid to stat flat for mixing, etc.) If I just had back all the time I’ve spent looking for stuff. Years...I’m talking years. ☹️
@longyarn4288
@longyarn4288 4 года назад
@@mlaiuppa - Check eBay for plain hinged tins. You'll still get listings for "cookie/biscuit" tins but several years ago I got a couple great ones - thin, but big enough to hold 40+ full White Knights pans. Let me know if you want me to see if I can find the supplier. 🙄

Perhaps I'm a bit late with reply to this, but I seem to get all sorts of promotional materials from companies that are printed on a magnetic sheet. Especially every time a new phone book comes out (which is several times a year here), some lawyer's office or realty company have these rubber-cemented to the front of the book and they are easily removed. They are intended to go on the front of your fridge to remind you of the company. :-) They are usually 4x4 inches. I've been collecting them for years and they come in handy. I cut them up in small squares for this purpose and glue them to the bottom of the little paint pans so I can easily remove the pans and exchange the colors when I want to, as you've said. Hope this helps if you get those magnetic advertisements.

Really nice use/recycle of the metal case. In the studio I use a huge heavy ceramic palette, but do my mixing on a lightweight butcher's tray. When I want a specialized palette, my magnetized half pans snuggle up perfectly on the butcher's tray. When I'm finished, the pans return to their sliding lid box designed for half pans. I bought 100 half pans years ago, but if I ever run out (more likely I'll forget where they are), bottle caps are a brilliant substitute! I suggest a Brother P-touch Personal Labeler for both pans and ceramic palettes to solve small lettering chores.

Great tips! Too funny, I saw another RU-vidr with that ice cube tray to make the mini Altoids travel palette and picked a set of the trays up from Bed Bath and Beyond and was going to make you a tiny palette and send it to you. I decided the wells were too small to get a decent brush in it and would probably damage the brush. I prefer your little half pan palette you made from the jewelry box! Those little half pans are so expensive! The go for as much as 89 cents each! Crazy for a little plastic box! I found them for about 50 cents or less I think at Jackson's like you said. Then I saw someone use Leggos - brilliant!

Lindsay, I have implemented many of your money saving tips and followed your lessons with much interest. I have always wanted to paint-so I am going to work on watercolor between my other projects. I already have the paints, a set of Reeves I bought for mixing and re-charging my pigment ink pads (great video by the way!) so I wanted a pallet so I can use them to get started. I scored at the Dollar Tree and got a 7 day pill keeper, each day with 4 'paint pans'. You can't beat $1.00 for the use I hope to get out of those pill keepers! I will have to let you know how it turns out. Thanks for ALL you contribute to the world of art and crafting. I love my home made gelli printing pads (your video again), and the fact that I have resurrected garage sale ink pads that I almost tossed in the trash! Keep up the good work.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 лет назад
Add a drop or two of glycerin or honey to the reeves paint when you put it in the pill keeper to keep it from cracking as it dires. That brand tends to crack and the glycerin helps it retain enough moisture.
@susandickson9869
@susandickson9869 7 лет назад

I know this is 7 years old, but an idea for magnets is those magnetic refrigerator sheets you sometimes get with local advertisers, county and city numbers, etc. Just cut and glue on, just be sure to get the right side stuck to the pan. I used a metal ruler to check sides. Works great, not extremely strong but keeps them in place.

Okay I'm back LOL! you can use the magnet tape on the bottom of the pans...but to make sure it sticks very well I would take a toothpick and put some E600 r like glue on the magnet to make sure it really sticks...they are notorious for falling off and I always use the glue now. Just a tip for your viewers...I'm sure you knew that. Something else I want to say to you...you mentioned you were kinda being long winded..IMHO that's okay. Even when you are talking a bit more than you meant to it is almost always information that is relevant....it's only occasionally what I would call chit chat....so be long winded...you have been teaching me so much I appreciate these free lessons. I can't afford to pay for lessons now...so I am watching everything you put up that is a subject I am interested in and I am beginning to think maybe I should just watch them all because you are soooo full of great tips! BTW I MUST ask...do ever throw anything away? I have to ask. I am a pack rat myself and am in the process of selling off allot of stuff I had left over from my business so I can set my studio up in stations. I am involved in some crafts as well as art...but aren't we all???? Water bottle caps...I'll have to remember that one. I can have a lot really fast!!!!!

Hey I am a Hairstylist and I use the small metal twist(reminds me of what you get for toothpaste to place on the bottom), but this is metal and about the length of a crayon and around the same roundness? It has a twist key at the end. Place the end of your paint tube into the slot that is in the middle of the metal peice and start to twist. Its used for hair color tubes to get all the color out also. You can get these at the beauty supply store such as Sally's beauty supply if you don't have a license.

AC Moore sells magnetic strips. They're about the width of watercolor pans, and you cut them to fit the length of the pan. Last time I bought some, they were about $1.50 USD for a small roll. Michael's also sells 10 yard coils of the same product for about $6.00, but of course you can use their coupon. ;)

I do the same thing except rather than magnets, I use kneaded eraser that sticks so well. I also use my sharpie to put down brand and pigment number. I always save my paint caps too. I've had to have Daniel Smith send me some because theirs pop from overfill and spill paint all over. I definitely need a gadget to squeeze my paint out better so none goes to waste. I have that tin too. But it beads up bad and stains and I'm so picky about that. Thanks for sharing.

Lol I spent much of the last week making mini palettes for en plein air too - and like you, I concluded having a large stash of half pans pre-filled would help. I can get 12 for £5 in the Flying Tiger Copenhagen set I reviewed lately and the box is another 12 wells I can fill also. I may buy a bag of half pans and duplicate my whole library of studio palettes into a box of half pans I can pick from to make en plein air sets by swapping around what is in a tin palette (the Prima watercolour palettes are great - got two for £14.80 each which is like $19 but within days both vendors - supermarket USA and BIC Warehouse - doubled the price, so glad I got them when I did. The paints weren't even bad either, just not as advertised.

I'm still playing with my mini ice cube tray and yes, you're correct...having 101 colours is very confusing and I'm constantly having to refer to my color chart and figure out the x and y axis...who knew algebra would help in watercoloring. Anyway, I'm not really enjoying using them. i will be glad when the pain is used up and, like you mentioned, might cut it up and make travel palettes or something else. It might grow on me, but would be much simpler to just squirt out 4-5 colors on my ceramic plate, paint my painting and move on.

The Qor 24 set comes in the large size metal tin, but it is not a flip top attached lid. Friction fit overlap like a box instead.

Hello Lindsay, Would you mind swatching out the "Indian Yellow, Cerulean Blue Chromium, Ultramarine Blue, Pyrrole Red Light, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna" set? I am specifically interested in the Cerulean Blue & Ultramarine (which I heard is a bit purple-y), and how transparent the yellow is. Could you maybe mix some green variations with them? I know it's a lot to ask. But I pine for those 3 colors. And thanks for the Lego tip! Good fun!

People save all their Altoid tins for me. I use water bottle caps for paints. I love how simple it is. Do you have any jewelry making coming our way? Love your channel.

Tobacco tins used to be v popular over here but now it's not considered PC I guess. I don't think we get Altoids here but we get similar things.

omgosh you read my mind. lol This morning I was trying to figure out a better palette situation for my D.Smith and OOR paints too, I was also emptying out cheap paints for the half pans. I have one larger QOR tin and 2 smaller ones, I love the lids because of the mixing circles BUT none of mine tins have hinges! I know, first world paint problems. haha But now I'm wondering how and if I can attach hinges to my tins..

Hah, I only recently figured out that dried watercolor in the tube is still usable, and ditto “dried” kids magic markers. 😏🌞😆 Yes, I can rewet them & go again 🥋 Lindsay has all the info on these tips. 😎.

Lindsay I have a question...well maybe 2...it's about warm colors vs cool colors...keep in mind I still have not gotten a wet brush onto the paint. I have these 5 tiny tubes of watercolor paint....gold, light yellow, scarlet, and ultramarine I think???? Oh and Chinese white...but that doesn't really matter. I got them with this set from a warehouse store years ago. It was a set on Illuminated Lettering. With that yellow,blue and red would that be a cool palette or a warm one and can you explain how I can tell please? I am trying to learn as much as I can before I invest any more big money. I am starting hopefully tomorrow night with my Prismacolor watercolor pencils in a coloring book. I seen someone doing it on youtube and I thought maybe the pencils would be good practice espically with getting used to the water brush. I am retired professional acrylic painter but am really green to watercolors and I need help! I am considering after I work a while with the pencils and the Cotmans I have I may swap out my palette to Daniel Smith because so many people like them. I think I would rather learn the true basics of mixing before I get into any further colors. I want to understand color and light. I made a HUGE mistake. I painted for 12 years as a business and I used craft acrylics and while it was very good for showing me how to handle a brush it did nothing to teach me about mixing....it's about time I learn this stuff and am just too old and poor to go back to art school.

Move to W&N pro as you will get many of the colours you're already used to and whilst you will notice a difference they will feel familiar. My channel has a video Cotman versus Professional to see the difference between the two. It was one of the first I did so a little while ago.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 8 лет назад
+The Spin Doctor yes and you can replace the color as you use it up bring very cost effective
@TheSpinDoctor

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Yup I love them for that reason - Cotman/W&N Pro is a good pairing for people who're getting better at painting or for those of us who dont' want to waste pro paints en plein air or for studies.

I have winsor newton in tube form but I find it a pain in the ass having to take some out each time I need a new colour.. So, moving tube to pan is just as simple as that? Will there be any differences after I move it? Like cons? Thanks

+MisaMisa I have done it successfully with all watercolor brands. W&N recommends you use it fresh from the tube but most if the artists I know let it dry in the palette:)

I had three tunes of da Vinci paint that I got free from Jerry's when I ordered. I just went to open a tube and paint started pouring everywhere without me squeezing it. any thoughts on how to prevent it from happening
@TheSpinDoctor
@TheSpinDoctor 8 лет назад
Put it in the fridge for 15 mins - that sometimes helps. Storing it upright for a few days can also help - tbh I just open them over my palette and if that happens about 1" fires out without squeezing and then it is totally fine.

hi, lindsay! i noticed you mentioned ordering from JacksonsArt.com based in the UK. i'm looking to order from them and have my package shipped to Guam (a U.S.A. territory), which is thankfully a shipping option on the website. i just wanted to ask your experience ordering from Jackson's Art and having it shipped to the US. did it take a really long time to receive the package? i just want to make sure there aren't any shipping concerns before i make a large order. thanks for your input!

Amazon sells little tube keys for super cheap and works like a charm plus they are sold in a set of 5 or 6 it's nice. Oh and they are metal.
@erins.5420

This is what happens when I don't watch the whole tutorial...I comment more than once...sorry... When the paint doesn't lay flat in the pan because it's thicker, just tap it down on the table over and over pretty firm, tap tap tap tap tap..... It works and gets the bubbles out.

+Erin S. or stir it with a pin or cocktail pick.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 8 лет назад
+Erin S. I have used them but you get more paint out with the wringers and they do not have to be left on the tube so you only need one. It is a real paint saver! Its been a while since I tried the keys, maybe they are better now:)
@erins.5420
@erins.5420 8 лет назад
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I can't say if the keys are any better but I know they can be taken off and on to use with another tube better squeezing. The crimp ones remind me of my hair stylists crimper when she mixes hair color and as far as size goes the little turn keys do pretty good and they are small. I think it was about $2 for the 5 or 6 and free shipping it took a week or so but it's been worth it on my end. I was able to wring out more than a few half pans. What I actually do is squeeze the paint into a blunt syringe, fill them up nice and pretty (it's the cleanest and waste free way for me) and when the tube is on its last leg I use the key to squeeze it as best as I can then suck the rest out with the syringe. The syringe will actually hold the paint without drying out for some time. It's a lure lock blunt syringe style thingamabob.

Off topic, Lindsay have you tried W&N Large Pans of watercolour? Giant palm-sized ones made of porcelain (which stack!) - the prices are pretty good but i wondered 1) how much paint and 2) is it actually extruded as I can't tell from photos.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 8 лет назад
+The Spin Doctor do they still make those? I thought they said 2.5 times the amount of a full pan if I recall correctly
@TheSpinDoctor
@TheSpinDoctor 8 лет назад
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Yes they do - very easy to get hold of from them and from UK Amazon. The paint doesn't look extruded which is my only worry as I fear they won't last long. Am getting ultramarine and cobalt blue and burnt sienna as the amount I use for washes with wide brushes that would help me a lot!
