TIPS & TRICKS | A Total War: Three Kingdoms Guide

TIP: After you reach Marquis, vassalize like crazy to build up for the late game. Easiest way to vassalize is to go to war -> crush them, -> during peace treaty trade their previous territory back to them and demand subservience.

Tip: if you disband a general the retinue it has on disband is the retinue the general will be called up with when reactivated. It will need to muster, but this saves you money on armies you don't need immediately. It also allows for specialty generals; for example a general packing several siege weapons cost an enormous upkeep, but if you aren't going hard on city walls you don't need it. Shelve it until you anticipate a seige in a few turns.

Here's a tip: Make administrators! Before you make a character an administrator, place them in an army, and fill up their retinue with the most awesome, expensive units you can... Once you place them in a city as an administrator, they'll bring their entire retinue with no unit upkeep. It's a great way to beef up a city's garrison defence for free. BTW, I know you have to pay the character more in salary, so not really free, but they usually increase income in that commandery by 10 - 15%, which should either make you a little bit of income, or at least balance it out. Either way, it's worth it for the extra sweet garrison imo.

Thanks for the guide havoc! Also one comment on the video, while the "would you like to know more" clip was fun at first, it got too repetitive quickly. I would think switching up the clip to other clips between each tip would be better. Anyways great video as usual

There's another reason not to always go to 0.0 in negotiations. Because it apparently can give you the trait "greedy". In my campaign Liu Bei became greedy and now doesn't get along with his wife, who despises greed 😁

Somerhings I just learned about. You can give your generals titles to help keep their satisfaction up, and they can give stats or other things to the general. 2 good ones are general of the left and general of the right. The left gives a discount on army building for that army and right gives a discount to the retinue upkeep of that army. Also as you are leveling your generals look at the ones meant to be admins and which ones are meant to be high court and lvl accordingly. In late game the generals on the 2 rows under your emperor all count as prime minister, so 6 generals with 3-4 skills that all say "only if..." All count. Also look at the traits, and if they have a title like under their name look at that, those can all give stat bonsus or effect the entire faction or commanderies they are over. Set up ambushes. Use 1 army as bait and have 1 or 2 set up for bush and watch the ai fall for the trap. Look up kiting for defending towns with towers but no walls if in romance mode. If you want to keep in good relations with a faction, or others in your coalition, go into trade and click on them to see who they like, don't like and are at war with. Don't go to war with those they like, and if that faction they like goes to war with you, don't execute their captured generals. Likewise go to war with factions they don't like and execute their generals. Doing this will help build your relationship with those you want to without having to give them overly beneficial trades. Stats matter for more then just war, they also effect admin and recruiting. ex before recruiting an army stack the generals with high instinct gear, it lowers the cost.

Take the battle auto-resolve predictions with a pinch of salt. There have been so many battles which I will "lose" when auto-resolving, but when I fight the battle myself, I end up completely destroying an enemy army, plus their reinforcements, even when outnumbered. I guess that the system calculates battle outcomes mostly based on unit types and numbers, but it does not take into account tactics, which you have control over to sway the odds in your favour. Even if you will inevitably lose a battle, take command yourself, as you can ensure you kill as many enemy soldiers as possible to give them a pyrrhic victory.

Can you somehow replace a general without taking away his army? When a general dies in a battle and I have to replace him, sometimes I chose a new one is going well with the other two generals. But I do not know when I chose a new one.

I'm having alot of difficulty getting a second AI into the alliance. My first alliance member simply vetos everyone I invite to the alliance. Has anyone else had this problem, and found a way to get around it? Why is it so much more difficult to get achievements like the 6 allies one than the legendary campaign and the no losses achievements? It's ridiculous...

My tip and trick.. Get 2 armies as soon as possible, one with more power and one for bait. Ambush big enemy armies out of the settlement and bam, win. :'D

The game mechanics look great, but I'm not really that interested in the setting. With just Chinese factions it seems like all armies basically have the same unit types. In Rome 2 you can be a Germanic faction fighting camels and elephants and cataphracts and guys on chariots and stuff. Do you have the same unit variety in this game?

Such a slow boring game compared to WH1-2 . Way to complicated recruitment chains for troops, reforms are one every five turns? Pretty stupid. The characters are cool, but the court and satisfaction bullshit is exactly that, bullshit. The dumbest possible mechanic from warhammer games (loyalty) is now a MAIN FOCUS of the game. It’s pretty stupid, I thought this was a total war game not a total diplomacy.
