From capacity, to the USB standard you choose, to durability and formatting choices, get this wrong and you may end up replacing your drive before you should, or it may let you down before or - worse - during a gig.
In today’s Tips & Tricks series video, I’m going to show you what you need to know to choose wisely - and give you a solid-gold recommendation of a drive that should last you a lifetime.

My tip would be to get 2 mid range USB drives, and mirror them, keeping one with you securely, in case some joker decides to steal the one you are using, or it malfunctions. Always have a backup! 👍🏻

A smarter idea is to keep a record of your playlists and collections on a portable drive. Carrying two of the same drive at the same place kind of defeats the purpose of a backup, because what happens if you lose both drives?

Rule of thumb: always bring 3 usbs. 2 for if the cdj's arent linked and one backup one incase one isnt working
@Phoenixm1200
@Phoenixm1200 3 года назад
nice tip !! what i do is attach them together so if they try to take one they gotta pull the other and take the cdj with them haha plus i have extras
@Adr805
@Adr805 4 года назад
I think the most important recommendation is to always have recorded 2 pendrives, just in case - one can have some problems or the link option on CDJ might not work.

I used the 3.0 and the usb drive recommended here and the loading was terrible!! I switched to the sandisk, it was faster and it worked like a miracle!

Nice video, though I miss one important thing: Physical size. A large drive will be sticking out of your gear like a flag pole and will therefore be fragile. Next to that it will draw attention from thieves or people who just want to be funny. The drive you recommend is very nice, but only in an environment where the public can't get close to your gear. You also must be sure you've ejected it before you or someone else closes the flightcase/-bag. I've seen those things happen..... I'm using Sandisk Cruzer Fit Drives or SD cards. Unfortunately, SD cards are only supported by the flagship players.
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 6 лет назад
It's a good point Leon, and a very valid one if you're not DJing in a secure place, agree completely.
@Endapooleli
@Endapooleli 6 лет назад
Yes, the size. I prefer Samsung Fit as Cruzer might heat up. It's also water-resistant, temp, shock and x-ray proof and not expensive.
@DJDFLAT
@DJDFLAT 6 лет назад
Leon, that's spot on man! Too many people trying to be funny when you take a toilet break. Unless security is at your booth, it's not worth the risk for something that is so large. At the end of the day, flash memory is pretty tough anyway, so all the protection in the world by a case, etc is a bit unnecessary I think.

I used to play with SanDisk Extreme Pro flashdrives. (They are quite tall) I recently purchased two 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards (95MB/s write speed). Their Rekordbox exporting speeds are on par with the (on paper much faster) Extreme Pro flashdrives. Pioneer say CDJ's are not compatible with SD cards bigger than 32GB, but I don't think they have actually researched that fact well enough, because I formatted my SD cards to FAT 32 and have not had one issue whatsoever (I have exprienced a few issues when playing with my flashdrives (the "File Collapsed" error), but nothing with my SD cards (They are exact replicas of my Flashdrives). And I have played a few weddings where my SD cards have been playing 6+ hours without breaks. Club gigs also have not had any issues (I keep my flashdrives on hand for when perhaps playing and they give you XDJ's or DDJ-RX etc.) The peace of mind from not having any piece of equipment as important as a flashdrive sticking out of the player is awesome!!

I tend to go for performance... For USB 3.x, I would go for something like a Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SATA SSD and enclosure with a USB 3.x cable. That is a full speed solid state hard drive! a 250GB EVO 860 should run about $80US, and a metal case another $20 to $25. 250GB of real SSD for about $100+tax&ship. More speed, durability and longevity than a standard flash drive. And, back it up! . Thanks for covering this topic, Phil!

Not a big fan of Corsair. Especially with me working in IT. Kingston make some very good devices. I use a micro SD cards. Very reliable. Rarely mess up and are little cheaper than USB. Most laptops have SD slots in them. If USB is needed, then there are micro SD to USB adapters that lets you place the micro SD in the USB. Micro SD have faster read and write to them. Comes in handy when looking for music

I have to say that I recently gir a Kingston USB drive as my Scandisk was getting full. However, my XDJ-1000 mk1 seem to be slower reading the Kingston and sometimes leaves me a little nervous when trying to work quickly. It reads faster from my laptop and is a nice & sturdy aluminium build. But when I by my next drive, I'll be going back to Scandisk

I have a 64gb Corsair Survivor, the silver one, and it takes forever to load on cdjs 350 and 850.. And sometimes it doesn't read rekordbox data on cdjs and xdjs.. What are the odds for my usb being fcked up? The reading time on a pc is also slow..

can not recommend the crosair stealth survivor, buy me a new one now because the read speed on the CDJs is very slow. With the 64GB model I also could not format to FAT32, so I could not use this. The 32gb version is unfortunately as mentioned above too slow

I’m new to mixing, I have started off using my Samsung 500gb ssd, it is small and compact. First question, is this ok? Second, before my music library gets too large do I move the a thumb drive?
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 3 года назад
There is a lot of variables here, in this video we're talking about using USB's for DJing in clubs with CDJs, is that your situation? In that case you may like to simply use your USB's as "crates" and change the music on them every time you have a gig. If this isn't your scenario then you don't need to use USB sticks ever.

Have seen reviews not recommending Corsair as, although undoubtedly rugged, has much slower read/write speeds than Sandisk Extreme. Also I believe Microsoft Disk Utility can't format and drive greater than 32gb in FAT32 - Is this still the case and if so can you recommend a third party utility formatter? Thx
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 6 лет назад
Not sure about 3rd party, but just go for whichever drive you feel is rugged/durable and meets the other criteria. This is just the one we spot used most often :)

Silly question, Can I use the Corsair as a replacement drive for my DDJ SX 2 ?, I have a Samsung 256 SSD mini, I know its the best I can get, its 3.0 and will last, but I’d like a good back up device.. Any help ? Thanks Brotha
@digitaldjtips
@digitaldjtips 6 лет назад
Don't understand your question. The DDJ-SX2 needs a laptop not a USB drive to work.
@MovieCaveDave

Yes I’m fully aware of that lol, I mean to store my music on and then plug into my Mac for Serato to read instead of having or as well as having my music on my external drive..
