it was a myth that circulated about Titanic being unsinkable. The only known statement from the company brochure was "practically unsinkable" meaning they did what could be humanly done at the time to ensure that it can keep itself afloat. "Practically unsinkable" was a term often used by shipping companies at the time to boast about their ships engineering and design. After the Titanic's sinking, they actually increased the number of water tight compartments (previously, they only installed 6 at the front but all were breached in the Titanic) on the remaining ships Olympic and Brittanic. They also raised the water tight seal from up to a much higher deck (up to deck C if I remember). Following the disaster, a law was also passed mandating all ships to have enough lifeboats for its maximum capacity. That said, it was impressive for the Titanic to keep itself afloat for so long. It took roughly 3 hours before it eventually went under.

Nothing is unsinkable and should be illegal to state so.

​@@DibIrkenIt wasn't a company brochure. White Star Line never proclaimed the Olympic Class to be unsinkable. It actually came from a publication called The Shipbuilder. In the 1911 edition, it listed specifications of the ships and how the watertight doors functioned. Detailing that by virtue of the doors being closed in the result of an accident, damaged sections were sealed off making the ships "practically unsinkable." The press took that quote and ran with it, and the rest is history. You're quite right about how well Titanic performed. She managed to stay on an almost even keel as she went down. Only listing around 8 degrees to port.

@@Purple___ yes.. it's called an urban myth. No1 from the White Star Line or anyone associated with the construction of the ship boasted that it was unsinkable or that God himself couldn't sink it. But amazing how such things get a foothold and become part of folklore.

Naming itunsinkable is a two way road,first it sank in it's maiden voyage,second till today it is as much researched as if it never sanked it is very much alive and all the people who lost their lives are kept alive in the memories of uncountable people .People who never knew them,some of them born decades after the tragedy happened.

Traumatic events can be remembered with extreme detail even in young survivors. The more traumatic the even the more “sharpe” it can remain in someone’s mind (sometimes it’s the opposite).

You wasn’t there so how do you know fact from fiction?

My primary reason for not believing this chap is his non-appearance in any of the books I've read about Titanic and her survivors and that's a pretty BIG objection. The most specific thing he described was seeing stokers coming up and out of the 'fiddley' "....right at the bows of the ship". The fiddley was a vertical vent leading up from the boilers to the boat deck located directly in front of each functional funnel and - according to modern 3D reconstructions - it had ladders up the side. A child wouldn't know of the existence of the fiddley, wouldn't even know that name and would have no idea that the bare-chested men emerging through what would be a very small, nondescript door had come from the boilers and from far back in the ship. To call the forward funnel "...right at the bows of the ship" seems odd; the furthest forward is 3/4 of the way to the bows. Considering that the Titanic was going down by the head there is also no way that escaping boilermen would be running forward (downhill) to emerge at (or near) the bows. Accurate accounts tell how the boiler men remained working the boilers long after the ship struck the iceberg, so the head-first attitude of the ship would have been MOST evident to the men fleeing the water rushing up over the bulkheads section-by-section. There's no way they would have rushed forward; they would have run uphill towards the rear of the ship. The rear-most funnel was a dummy funnel i.e there was no boiler beneath it and served primarily as an air vent for the first class dining rooms... They might have emerged from that fiddley (assuming there was a connection between the 3rd boiler room and the base of the dummy 4th funnel) but it's at the opposite end to Mr. Hall's recollection. It's possible that a stoker, faced with a rush of water into the first boiler would have made his way vertically up the fiddley and emerged at the base of the forward-most funnel... but that would place the young Mr. Hall at the front quarter of the ship (with its head going down) to witness it. Mr. Hall's testimony also differs from all other child-survivor's accounts I have read. Those accounts all centre on their parents; their experience is always attached to the decisions and interactions of their parent(s). This isn't surprising since the threat of being separated from parents would be uppermost in the child's mind. Mr. Hall tells us nothing of the traumatic suffering of his mother or the way in which he was parted from her. Sorry Mr. Hall, it doesn't make sense.

I think that was Frankie Goldsmith, he was 9 when the ship sank and ended up living near a stadium in Detroit from memory and the cries of the crowd used to haunt him as it sounded like the people on the ship when it went down.

It wasn’t too small of a rudder. It was the worlds largest rudder. There were many factors leading to the ship hitting the iceberg but the rudder wasn’t a factor. Sure if there was a bigger rudder maybe it could have turned sooner but that doesn’t mean the existing rudder was unsafe. Ship was going too fast for the conditions because icebergs were harder to see.

Giving the watch binoculars and the captain not ignoring the iceberg field warning would certainly stopped this tragedy.

There were people traveling who were not on the list without tickets period. It was the time of immigration, everything was a mess.

What in God's name would make you believe they kept accurate records here? Who knows how many people were really on that ship? If anyone believes that there were not tickets sold under ground, so to speak, then it's time you woke up. Having said that, this man was on board as he stated period.

not if he was a child and he was pushed onto a lifeboat because he thought he saw his mom on it....then on the Carpathia she was not among the survivors...so if he was a child orphan he could well have been adopted and now use his adopted last name....so his new name would not be on the lists.

It sucks that just to avoid a panic most were not told soon enough that the ship would sink. Lives matter&they all deserved to know. I wish someone would've gotten the attention of the Californian ship somehow. Captain Stanley Lord had the log paper missing out of it's pages of the night Titanic sunk. I can't stand that man because outside of his working crew he had an empty ship&that's why in the survivor story books it says he could've saved one or even all from losing their lives but he stayed in bed&neglected his duty of investigating a ship sending off distress rockets. I hate him because he was so close&stayed in bed yet other Captain's from miles away were willing to change their course of plans&rush to the scene as quick as it was humanly possible. I read it in the survivor stories at my local library. Stanley Lord is a big loser&should've never been the Captain of any ship imo!

actually there are several who said they were thrown on near the end, one girl was 12 and the last boat was leaving and she was left behind when her mother and younger sister were put on another boat....the one crew member declared the boat full and began to lower, when another saw her and scooped her up and said you can fit one more and dropped her in.

Listen to Ruth Becker Blanchard...she was 12. Her mother sent her back to the stateroom to get some blankets, and while she was gone, her mother, little brother and little sister got on lifeboat 11 without her, and by the time she got back up on deck, the lifeboat was being lowered....she went up to a crew member and asked if he could get her on a lifeboat, and so as they were getting ready to lower lifeboat 13 as it was full, the crew member scooped her up and said make room for one more and tossed her into the boat....it happened. Another steerage family the mother was allowed on with her 3 youngest kids, ages 1,3 and 5.....but the 5 year old girls twin 5 year old brother, and their other kids aged 7, 9, and 11 were left behind with the father to die.

They got separated from each other.
