A MONTH TO REMEMBER - APRIL 2ND
112 years ago today, Titanic underwent several hours of sea trials - or “turning circles” as 2nd Officer Charles Lightoller so plainly described them. This important series of maneuvers was meant to prove her seaworthiness to the British Board of Trade and was required by law.
After a successful day of trials, Titanic departed Belfast, Ireland (with just one fare-paying passenger) for an overnight journey to Southampton, England where final preparations for her maiden voyage would be made.

It feels sad to watch this. This was supposed to be the culmination of years of work and the prelude to a long and successful career. Instead, less than two weeks later, it was all gone.

@@nager1997 I don't agree at all, the ship has had a very long and almost infinitely successful career. I would even go so far as to say it is unmatched in its fame. Longer than Olympic. Longer than Britannic. More well known and held in higher esteem than both. People even want to build a second one.

What I appreciate about these renderings is that they don't just recreate the ship, and that in itself is a great job, but also the editing, the choice of shots, of certain angles, some camera movements that seem like caressing the ship, others in which it seems to come to life, like the famous scene of "Take her to the sea Mr. Murdoch", I don't know if I get the idea. Beautiful work! ❤

The older I get, the more I find it unbelievable and horrifying that a brand new ship sank on its maiden voyage. I really do hope if we get to see 'What if... Titanic survived well into the 30s' video's or a remake of the Empress of Ireland sinking. Those animations are made so well!
@simonfrost7094

Oceanliner Designs has already done an 'alternative history'-style 'what if Titanic never sank' video. It's very entertaining
@ChrisCooper312
@ChrisCooper312 4 месяца назад
The trouble with "what ifs" is that with Olympic you see her full and successful life, which would have ended up with scrapping in the 1930s and likely now being largely forgotten. Her claim to fame would be as the biggest ship for about a year until Imperator came along. Fitting into maritime history alongside other White Star ships like Oceanic and "The Big Four". On the other hand, there are many other unknowns. What would she have done during the war (hospital ship, transport), and would she have survived? Perhaps it's HMHS Titanic that sinks in the Mediterranean, and Britannic spends the war unfinished at Belfast before having a long career.
@simonfrost7094
@simonfrost7094 4 месяца назад
@@ChrisCooper312 It's the central paradox of Titanic's fame - had she survived, she would be just a footnote in the evolution of the ocean liner - a form of transport which itself has been relegated to history (cruise liners are the successors to, but definitely are not themselves, ocean liners). The fact she sank and the legacy of that night guarantees she will be remembered, even though she wasn't particularly special (apart from being the largest ship in the world, until Imperator a year or two later, as you point out). The Titanic was certainly not the 'pinnacle' of ocean liner technology, yet her loss means she has become the 'definitive' ocean liner.
@OzzieBo
@OzzieBo 4 месяца назад
It’s definitely a two sided argument.on one side, Titanic would be largely forgotten, and maritime safety may be more or less the same as the time of her sinking. The other end is, if she hadn’t have sunk, a ship could have sunk in the world war, possibly killing yet more because the changes to maritime law didn’t exist because the Titanic didn’t sink. It’s a very difficult question to fathom the importance of these events and that they had to happen.

Indeed. Titanic Attractions pretending to be museums, Titanic Hotels, Titanic Distilleries… You would be forgiven for forgetting that H&W also built successful ships where people didn’t die. But Belfast wouldn’t want the tourists thinking of that when there is money to be made.

Strange that, despite Olympic's sea trials lasting 2 days, Titanic's sea trials lasted only half a day. And also, Titanic never went out into the open sea and just stayed in the channel. Of course there will be people who will dispute this.

She represented hopes and dreams. Hard to believe or even accept, less than two weeks later she was a mangled wreck in the abyss of eternal darkness. Most people on board during that trial..... they accompanied her during her first trip on the 2nd..... and followed her down.... during her last trip to the bottom on 15th. There is beauty and tragedy in this realisation.

It is Titanic month all right although she was originally scheduled to sail on March 20th. The Olympic dropped a propeller blade the month before, on the 24th, so she needed to go in for repairs in order to go back to service as soon as possible and generate money for White Star. It all delayed the Titanic's construction - for a second time. The first was the fall of 1911 that was when the Olympic collided with the HMS Hawke

Love the fact she is depicted with a 3 blade central prop as Harland and Wolff documents state she was fitted with. They were experimenting with different prop configurations to see which was more efficient and had minimal vibration. Sadly Titanic never was able to deliver the results and I believe Olympic was fitted with a 3 blade central prop to see which was better. She has a 4 blade central for the rest of her career as was Britannic fitted with a 4 blade which must have performed better. I wish we could see Titanics central prop but it sadly is buried deep in the mud.
